External Hard Drives

Recommended Posts

Western Digital is a good brand.

It also depends on what interface you want, USB, FireWire or combo USB/FireWire.

FireWire is better.

Do you know what size capacity you need, 80GB, 120GB, 250GB?

What is your budget?

Do you have a Fry's Electronics, CostCo or Sam's Club near you?

BUY.COM currently has a 250 Gig Lasonic external Hard Drive for $87.99 with free shipping, and if you sign up for their VISA card, they will take an additional $25 off. For the free shipping, you have to re-enter your address in the ship to field and select ground shipping. If you do not re-enter your address in the ship to field, the ground shipping selection will be greyed out. To find this deal, enter 3.5 enclosure in the search field.

I bought one and am quite satisfied with it. It comes with a power source and a USB cable. No internal fan, but that does not seem to bother it.

Beth,

It is fairly easy to make your own external drive. All you need is a drive, and then an external enclosure for it.

You will usually get a longer warranty, as well as a better hard drive, when you make it yourself. My guess is that it would take a newbie about 5 minutes to make it from all of the parts.
