Does anyone share a little holiday cheer by giving the cashier a little something? I've been thinking of doing something, especially this year, since many workers are giving time up with their families on Thanksgiving Day to work.

Long time ago I used to give candy canes or something. When I was in retail I had a few regulars that would bring me a drink, but it was a small store and they knew how hard it was for me to get out to take a break...

Just ask before you give. Some retail places don't allow the employees to accept tips. Sometimes "forced" tips will go into a pool that is eventually used for a store party (usually just disappears) and sometimes the employee is just fired (depends on manager.)

When I worked retail, I would refuse tips that just went into the pool because we never saw the benefits.

I do every year! Just a small candy cane. but a reminder that not everyone has lost their minds and there is humanity and kindness left in the world.... end of shift can be hard, especially after you have been yelled at for 8+ hours by angry people! With a smile, and a thank you. I've been there, and something as simple as a thank you means a lot.

The best gift or tip you can give someone in retail or service is tell their boss you had a good experience with them, so they get a positive mark on their employment record when they come up for raise or promotion.

If someone is pleasant and doing s great job, I take their names and register number and then call on Saturday and talk to a manager. :) Last year I called Walmart about my awesome cashier and the manager was very excited to hear about my experience. Likewise, if a store is doing a great job as a whole I'll call corporate.
