Does anyone have this? I was looking at it after GD posted it today for $99.99. DH birthday is in 2 weeks (the 31st) and thought this would be a great present for him. He is away from home for most of the week, and lately has been working on weekends too. He stays at his Dad during the week so has a laptop down there with wireless internet service. He also has a smartphone.

He watches NASCAR and usually records the races on his DVR at home. I thought this would be great for him so he could watch his recorded shows or if possible live TV in NYC at his Dads. His Dad does not have cable TV just regular TV.

I read that the box needs to be near our Modem/router. Our modem and router is upstairs and his DVR box is downstairs. We do have one of those things that we used on an older Xbox that was not wifi and made it wifi. Can I use that on this Slingbox.

Would really love some answers from anyone who has it since it is on sale today and would like to take advantage of it being almost 50% off. If this would not work for DH is there something else that would.

Thanks so much.

don't have one but amazon reviews seem kinda worrying...181 5 star then 82 1 stars. seems like the issue seems to be dying just before warranty and not getting an RMA number in order to process exchange/return.

Yes I saw that. I am getting the extended warranty with BB it is only $20 for 4 years so if there is a problem I would just take it back to BB.

I was just wondering if anyone had it and how they found it worked when they are away from home. I just ordered it and will pick it up on Monday and will hide it until next weekend when we will give him his presents. I hope it works for him. He would really like to watch his Nascar races when he has all this time during the week. He also records a lot of shows and lately never has time to watch them. Thanks

We have a Slingbox, and my husband uses it all the time. He loves it. He installed the app on the iPad, and walks around the house watching TV on the iPad... He will also watch while we're at my mom's for Sunday dinner. He watches both live TV and recorded things. He also has it on his phone, and sometimes will watch there too, or listen to a news show while he's in the car. Edited by bluebear

Thank you

How is it connected at your house. His DVR is on a different floor from our Router/modem.

Ours is connected to our router. All of our -stuff- is all in one spot in the living room. The TV also doubles as the Xbox display, and sometimes also another computer monitor.

Anyhow, what you will need is a power inline something. You plug the SlingBox into it, then plug that into a power jack in the wall (NOT a power strip). Then you do the same for the router. They sell non-sling branded ones at BB and places, or there is an "official" one on their site.

On more thing. The SlingBox is basically a controller for your DVR. So, when your husband is watching the Slingbox, it will occupy that TV. It will show what he is watching (if you turn it on).

Hope this makes sense.

That is fine about the TV since he uses the one in our living room. My router is upstairs and his TV is downstairs. What will I have to get to connect it to the router. We have one of those things you connect to something and make it wifi will that work. Used to use it on the old Xbox 360. I will be picking it up on Monday from BB

You will need to get a SlingLink Turbo to connect it to the router. The Xbox thing will not work. It does not work wireless. How this works is you plug the Slingbox into the device with a ethernet cord. You then plug the device into the power adapter on your wall. Then, you plug the router into the other part of the device (it comes in 2 parts) and then plug that into the wall. It uses the power lines in the wall to send the network signal. (I'm probably not explaining this quite right, but hopefully close enough).

Here is the link on their website that explains the device.

My husband said that you can get something like this that is not official Slingbox, but he seemed to think it would cost more than this one. And I don't know what exactly it's called to search for it.

Okay, here it is onNewEgg's site.

A little cheaper too. :)

Just wanted to update. Gave DH the Slingbox for his birthday. He was not impressed when he opened it. :) Well today he set it up and can we say IMPRESSED!!! He is so happy that he now has "cable" in Queens at his Dad's who only has basic TV via antenna.

Thanks bluebear for your help. Now will have to wait to find another deal on the Slingbox since my Aunt in California would like to get it for her Hubby out at the Cayes in Belize.

Thanks, that is where I got ours from. I saw it was that price on Friday (I think) but DH had not tried out his so my Aunt said she wanted to wait.

Keep an eye on bestbuy. It has been $99 twice in the past month or so, but of course is not on sale right now. :)
