BobbyDouglas
I am looking for an SATA 150 Internal Hard Drive that is 120GB or larger in size. I took a look around a bit and found a Retail Hard Drive Kit, but I wasn't sure what is meant by "Kit". Anyone familiar with this?
Guest beatmix01
Are you looking for a regular ATA or a SATA drive?
BobbyDouglas
SATA
Brad
I assume the kit refers to being in a retail box, usually with some kind of software, mounting rails (for mounting in a 5 1/4" drive bay) and screws. At least that is what they usually refer to.
BobbyDouglas
Thanks for clearing that up for me :)
BobbyDouglas
Something like this: http://www.buy.com/prod/Maxtor_SATA_Ultra_Hard_Drive_Kit_hard_drive_250_GB_SATA_150/q/loc/450/10348872.html But maybe with a little less $
BobbyDouglas
Or... $185 http://www.computerhq.com/Maxtor_250GB_SATA_150_L01M250_75192102829/hardware/partinfo-id-178868.html
bockchow
new only or would you be interested in used?
BobbyDouglas
New only. This will be a drive that contains secure files, so I would not want to have any chance of having a used hard drive (and then having that crash on me).
BobbyDouglas
What is the difference between: Hard Drive: http://westerndigital.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=59Hard Drive Kit: http://westerndigital.com/en/products/productkit2.asp?DriveID=
Brad
From the site: "For easy installation, kit includes installation and management software, hardware and step-by-step illustrated instructions." Like I said before, you get mounting hardware, probably a SATA cable, software and manual. With the bare drive you get the bare drive - usually nothing else. ZipZoomFly has the bare drive for $162 with free 2nd day shipping: http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=101220 It also says it has a 3 year warranty, which is nice. BobbyDouglas
Actually that is the one I am using right now that is sometimes messing up on me. ST3120026AS-RK is the one. I got it for $87 shipped about 5 months ago. I would rather wait for a week or so and find a good Western Digital deal. If I am going to spend over $100 to get a good hard drive, I might as well make it around $175 and get a WD 250GB SATA/
Guest beatmix01
If the drive isnt working properly, then why not RMA it to seagate and have them ship you a new one?
BobbyDouglas
Because I can't have my computer down for that long. I can't say 100% that the hard drive is bad, all I know is that it is causing a few problems, but it could be a problem with the cable, not the HD.
