I was going to get DS a Leapster, but then I got lucky, and found a LeapPad at savers(with 3 books/cartridges, all for $12.99) And, DS saw it, and has been bugging me off and on for it since(well, he hasn't mentioned it in a few days, so I think he forgot). So, he's getting the Leappad this year. I will be buying additional books for it, I can afford to with the price I paid for it.

The V-smile looks really cheesy to me, and we have regular video game systems and educational games(DS has 2 sesame street games for the N64, never plays them)

I bought both my grandchildren two years ago the Leappad,,,they hardly ever used it. But I have decided to get them the Leapster this year since my grandson asked for it. He is 5 and his cousin is almost 5. I saw a commerial with a boy playing with it, I thought it looked like they would have fun with it.

My son is 3.5 and I got him the L-Max, BUT I'm giving it to him on his birthday in March. He got the V-Smile last year for Christmas and only played with it occassionally. It was somewhat confusing for him without help (wanted Simba to get the red flowers-he figured he had to push the RED button to do that, but that's not how it works). Anyway, he's old enough now to want to play with it, but my brother's dog ate the cord that's connected to the system. I guess we're getting a new V-Smile.

I'm not sure exactly what the deal with the V-Smile pocket is, but the manufacturer's age is 5 for that, even though the regular one is 3. I figured I was safer with the L-Max.

My son loves his vsmile, this year he is getting the vsmile pocket. The games are educational and fun. And not too hard, he is 3 1/2..plus the library of 'smartridges' grows with them. Never was too interested in the leappad.

I just got my Ds the vsmile pocket for his birthday and he loves it.

Definatly the Leapster. All 3 of mine had the little touch leappad, my first leappad and the leappad....all of which were barely played. They all LOVE the leapster and lmax. I bought a vsmile and took it back because if they are gonna play video games they wanted video games, not something that looks like an atari. The graphics were horrible!

That's what I meant by cheesy-looking. Even Super Nintendo games look better than what's on the Vsmile.

My only complaint about the Leapster, when I was looking into it, was the lack of 4-5 yo games. They should've built a bigger game library before introducing the L-Max.
