That is a difficult one, but I have an even harder time with the grandparents! They are all in their eighties, and I never have a good idea for them. They make them at Kinkos and walgreens and are around $20-25. Everyone can use a calendar. Sometimes there are coupons that you get discounts if you buy/make more than one. Alittle out of my price range for a blanket. So I looked on ebay and found one in black and white for $60.00 and I think I am going to get that one. We made my grandmother a scrapbook for her 80th birthday and she loved it. The only problem was it seemed like everybody else in out family thought it was a good idea too and she got 4 of them. Sometimes there are coupons that you get discounts if you buy/make more than one.I just recently looked into doing this for the grandparents with pictures of our two kids, you can get a calendar done on winkflash.com for only $12.95 - with a different picture for each month. They also had a bunch of other great photo gifts like mugs, even a cutting board! You can just upload pictures from your digital camera to the site, or scan your original photos to your computer, and upload that way. My other grandmother we use to be real practical. We would go to sams's and load up on paper products. It lasted all year long. She loved it. They have 28 different organizations represented from a local "Save the River" organization to immunizations for children in Nepal and everything in between. The different organizations have different gift levels. For example, Holt International Children's Services offers a $30 gift to support 1 orphan & caregiver for 1 month; a $15 gift to support 1 orphan & caregiver for 2 weeks; or in the "children's area" a $1 gift to support 1 orphan & caregiver for 1 day. I started doing this for all the kids teachers and "club" leaders. I wanted to keep it to $5/person/gift and the teachers already have tons of knick knacks. My older DD came home last year after handing out the cards and was really shocked by how enthusiastic the teachers were about it (we gave them "school supplies for Iraqi children.") We also do this for my DH's aunt & uncle who want for nothing. We also have the kids use their money to do this for their aunts/uncles/grandparents. Beats trolling the Dollar store for 2 hours. It makes Christmas go all year round for her! Some of her favorites are Cracker Barrel, O'Charleys, Sonic, McDonalds, Wendy's, WalMart, Kohls, Publix, JC Pennys, and Krogers. I try to get a mix of different places, usually things that are close to her, and make sure that there are a couple of clothes stores, grocery stores, and food outlets. She usually just gets the food to go and brings it home. But one meal from O'Charleys with the salad, bread, potato, etc. will last her 2 meals usually. I usually put them in a big box with a framed picture of my son. She waited so long for him to come into the world (I was 42 when he was born 3 years ago), that she treasures everything about him!
