dorkydiva Posted October 26, 2005 Posted October 26, 2005 Kygal2003 asked a great question about what to get parents for Christmas. That is a difficult one, but I have an even harder time with the grandparents! They are all in their eighties, and I never have a good idea for them. I feel like I usually end up getting them something stupid because I really have no clue. Any good ideas out there?

bayhaysay Posted October 26, 2005 Posted October 26, 2005 OK, you may think this is stupid but my grandmother (80's) got one last year and loves it. Walmart has an automatic jar opener for about $40 (I think). She has arthritis in her hands so it really helped her out alot.
ryka Posted October 26, 2005 Posted October 26, 2005 I am getting my grandmother a blanket with the grandkids picture on it. They sell them in sears.
maddielexi4 Posted October 26, 2005 Posted October 26, 2005 How about a big family portrait? We did that for my grandparents a few years ago, and they loved it! Very sentimental!
holly2hottie Posted October 26, 2005 Posted October 26, 2005 What about getting pictures of the family and creating a personalized calendar. They make them at Kinkos and walgreens and are around $20-25. Everyone can use a calendar. Sometimes there are coupons that you get discounts if you buy/make more than one.
angiegrim Posted October 27, 2005 Posted October 27, 2005 Ryka, do you have a link to what the blankets look like? That sounds like something my Mom would like.
dorkydiva Posted October 27, 2005 Author Posted October 27, 2005 These are great ideas! Thank you all so much!!
elena_398 Posted October 27, 2005 Posted October 27, 2005 Every year I get together w/ my sisters family and we get a portrait taken. I Went to the store Things Remembered and they engraved the picture frame for us. It was beautiful
Kygal2003 Posted October 27, 2005 Posted October 27, 2005 I am putting together a scrapbook of their children, grandchildren, and now great grandchildren. I've included pics from the past and then an updated pic of them now. I've also had each one (that is able) to write about a favorite memory so that I can include it also.
ryka Posted October 27, 2005 Posted October 27, 2005 I don't have a link. I was walking through the store and saw them. I called to find out the price and they are $300. Alittle out of my price range for a blanket. So I looked on ebay and found one in black and white for $60.00 and I think I am going to get that one.

We made my grandmother a scrapbook for her 80th birthday and she loved it. The only problem was it seemed like everybody else in out family thought it was a good idea too and she got 4 of them.
dealluvr Posted October 27, 2005 Posted October 27, 2005 i don't have to worry.the grandparents on my side are gone and the other set have nothing to do with the boys!
jaacyr Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 What about getting pictures of the family and creating a personalized calendar. They make them at Kinkos and walgreens and are around $20-25. Everyone can use a calendar. Sometimes there are coupons that you get discounts if you buy/make more than one.I just recently looked into doing this for the grandparents with pictures of our two kids, you can get a calendar done on winkflash.com for only $12.95 - with a different picture for each month. They also had a bunch of other great photo gifts like mugs, even a cutting board! You can just upload pictures from your digital camera to the site, or scan your original photos to your computer, and upload that way. It is a nice sentimental gift, grandparents usually love that type of thing! :)
pmdemey Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 Candle sets, basket with different coffees and a mug, phone cards, and or a new throw blanket gets me off the hook nicely.
whafs8 Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 Our Normal Grandparent items include Fleece blankets and warm slipper shoes. Ok practical. My other grandmother we use to be real practical. We would go to sams's and load up on paper products. It lasted all year long. She loved it. Hey she was easy to please
phins_jazy Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 thanks for posting about winkflash. they've got some cool products there. i think that may be another present down!
copados1993 Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 anyone have an idea for something that my kids could make for their Grandparents this year?
RobD Posted November 3, 2005 Posted November 3, 2005 In a "non material" vein, our local churches have an Alternative Gift Market every year. They have 28 different organizations represented from a local "Save the River" organization to immunizations for children in Nepal and everything in between. The different organizations have different gift levels. For example, Holt International Children's Services offers a $30 gift to support 1 orphan & caregiver for 1 month; a $15 gift to support 1 orphan & caregiver for 2 weeks; or in the "children's area" a $1 gift to support 1 orphan & caregiver for 1 day. I started doing this for all the kids teachers and "club" leaders. I wanted to keep it to $5/person/gift and the teachers already have tons of knick knacks. My older DD came home last year after handing out the cards and was really shocked by how enthusiastic the teachers were about it (we gave them "school supplies for Iraqi children.") We also do this for my DH's aunt & uncle who want for nothing. We also have the kids use their money to do this for their aunts/uncles/grandparents. Beats trolling the Dollar store for 2 hours. You help people, and it's tax deductable.
elena_398 Posted November 3, 2005 Posted November 3, 2005 They get a engraved portrait every year. I go to the store Things Remembered. Love that store for personalized wood items
kjunea Posted November 3, 2005 Posted November 3, 2005 I get my mom gift certificates every year to lots of different restaurants, stores, etc. She loves it! It makes Christmas go all year round for her! Some of her favorites are Cracker Barrel, O'Charleys, Sonic, McDonalds, Wendy's, WalMart, Kohls, Publix, JC Pennys, and Krogers. I try to get a mix of different places, usually things that are close to her, and make sure that there are a couple of clothes stores, grocery stores, and food outlets. She usually just gets the food to go and brings it home. But one meal from O'Charleys with the salad, bread, potato, etc. will last her 2 meals usually. I usually put them in a big box with a framed picture of my son. She waited so long for him to come into the world (I was 42 when he was born 3 years ago), that she treasures everything about him! She has great-grandkids that are older than he is! Hope that helps! June
Gloey Posted November 3, 2005 Posted November 3, 2005 As a grandmother I Love the blanket idea! We never really expect much, you know kids have so many other expenses. Anything with my GD's photo on it would be appreciated.
DeNovi Posted November 3, 2005 Posted November 3, 2005 Me being a disabled grandma... that really depends on the gift.. and $ is tight.. go to Dollar store and make a basket of what ever she likes, candles, cologne, teas, which ever and wrap that up. Dinner gift certificate... Picture of grandkids on a calendar she can use every day of the year, Marie
cherry33778 Posted November 3, 2005 Posted November 3, 2005 For one of my grandmothers gifts I was going to give her the 3-piece sleeper set at walmart, since she has no central heat. But I am also dumb founded on what else I should buy her without going over $40.
satidwell Posted November 8, 2005 Posted November 8, 2005 i always get my grandparents a gc to a restrant that they love but really cant afford to go to often they love it and have asked for every year for 5 yrs
