Looking for a laptop with a budget of ~$800

Recommended Posts

Hey there...I am looking for a laptop for a friend of mine...she wants to just browse the internet and store her videos that she takes with her digital camcorder...any ideas on what I should suggest??? The ones that I've found are all sold out...she goes back to Turkey in 8 days so I'll need it 3-day shipped I guess...that won't be a problem tho...

So...any ideas on a reliable ~$800 laptop that has a large/fast enuff hdd/memory to handle her video storage and regular internet browsing???

THANX

Turion 64

512mb

DVD +/- RW

14" brightview screen

1.5" thin

6-in-1 card reader

60gb hd

it takes like 5 days to get it shipped tho...that's pushing it...leaves barely any room for error...I need something that is ready to ship and doesn't need to be built like the Dell laptops...any suggestions???

Having placed over 200 orders at Dell.com, I can assure you that their inventory system usually overshoots the estimated ship date. There are some rare cases (usually with E&A such as digicams) where the wait time is several weeks to a few months.

If you want a good deal on a laptop, here are your two basic choices:

  • Dell Inspiron 6000 for $1,022.45 after 45% off coupon

    Intel® Pentium® M Processor 740 (1.73 GHz/2MB Cache/533MHz FSB)

    Microsoft® Windows® XP Home

3Yr Ltd Warr,At-Home Service, and Tech Support plus Nights and Weekends

15.4 inch UltraSharp WSXGA+ LCD Panel Dell UltraSharp Quality

    512MB Shared DDR2 SDRAM 2 Dimms

    60GB Hard Drive

8x CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability Burn CDs and DVDs

    Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200 Internal Wireless (802.11 b/g, 54Mbps)

Integrated Intel® Media Accelerator 900 Graphics

6-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery (53 WHr)

  • Compaq Presario V2312US for $779 after $200 mail-in rebates @ Circuit City B&M

    AMD Turion™ 64 1.6GHz

    512MB RAM

    60GB Hard Drive

    802.11g WiFi

    Dual-layer DVD+/-R/RW

    14.0" WXGA High-Definition BrightView Widescreen

No Ethernet (not sure if this is correct or not, very strange)

I would go with the Dell which has a 3 year warranty (not sure about international coverage though). However you have a tight schedule, so I'd probably buy online at CircuitCity.com and select local pickup.

I'd also take a look at the HP Pavilion DV1000/DV4000 or Gateway at your local BestBuy.
