Mike Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 Save 35% on any Dimension Desktop purchase of $999 or more That seems hot, havn't played around with it though
dabuddha Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 Any good deals for an Inspiron 6000 at the moment? I want something with a decent video card. I was looking at the 700M but the keyboard being small turned me off on it. Apparently the 600M feels like it's poorly built. That left the 6000 which I saw someone with and it looked pretty good to me. Plus I can get an ATI card for it.

need_a_laptop Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 Me looking for the 6000D too. Here's what I have in mind - M740/WSXGA+/512M(1DIMM)/40G/DVDRW/b+g+bluetooth/ATI-X300-64 with the 90day warranty when they really make it 'Fully Customizable'. Two questions: 1. Any thoughts on when the $750 off 1500 will be back .. have been waiting for it for the past couple of weeks. The above config weighs in at over 1500, but below 1850 where the 40% off coupon from two weeks ago makes sense. 2. Any best practices on the memory? Dell obviously has it over-priced and I am in two minds over taking 256M, chucking it and purchasing 1G (1 or 2DIMMS) OR to get 512 1DIMM and then only buy another 512 DIMM. What DDR2 do they put in there? I'm planning to get the 533MHz FSB processor, but does the laptop come with 533MHz RAM when you buy it from Dell?
RossMAN Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 need_a_laptop, First of all to the forums 1. Any thoughts on when the $750 off 1500 will be back .. have been waiting for it for the past couple of weeks. The above config weighs in at over 1500, but below 1850 where the 40% off coupon from two weeks ago makes sense. I'm guessing the $750 off $1499 (with no e-value restrictions) should return in about 6 weeks. If you plan on getting a LOADED laptop the 40% off coupon gives you more bang for your buck - since 40% off $1499 is only $599. I've read on other forums that they're shipping 400MHz RAM not 533. The ideal solution is to buy the least amount of RAM (256MB) and buy the rest from newegg.com or crucial.com RAM installation is super easy and fast. A few months ago when I had a 6000, I got the min 256MB RAM and bought 256MB for $35 shipped from eBay. Your configuration looks great although I would recommend upgrading the warranty to at least 1 year mail-in. For an extra $29 it's a no brainer. You can't easily fix or replace an LCD panel or motherboard in a laptop like you can in a desktop. Also most premium credit cards offer extended warranty for free.
need_a_laptop Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 Thanks for the info! New question: 3. The 6000 comes with DDR2 and the 700M carries DDR. Checked crucial and it says 200pin SODIMM for both laptops. Thinking of getting a 6000 and a 700 .. will the 256M DDR2 from the 6000 work in the 700 alongside the 256 DDR? PS: Just saw a new coupon code on another forum - $50 off $999+ coupon code "ZMLBMJ0SB4FTFM" (may require Discover Card payment)
RossMAN Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 3. As a point of reference I check Crucial.com to see what RAM is 100% compatible with Dell laptops. Here are links:700m DDR PC2700 • CL=2.5 • UNBUFFERED • NON-ECC • DDR333 • 2.5V6000 DDR2 PC2-3200 • CL=3 • UNBUFFERED • NON-ECC • DDR2-400 • 1.8VComparing 1GB Crucial.com prices, there's a small $15 difference between the two. PS: Just saw a new coupon code on another forum - $50 off $999+ coupon code "ZMLBMJ0SB4FTFM" (may require Discover Card payment) Unfortunately I don't have a Discover card, any idea if that stacks with this coupon?
need_a_laptop Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 Yeah, saw crucial says DDR for 700 and DDR2 for 6000, but also noted it only says upto 400Mhz DDR2 for the 6000. Guessing that's because the std 6000 config comes with 400MHz FSB, because otherwise the $50 upgrade to 533MHz is pointless. Wondering though about the backward compatibility of DDR2 and inter-operability with DDR. Regarding the coupon, it does stack, but hoping someone says it worked for them with a non-Discover card.
RossMAN Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 Regarding the coupon, it does stack, but hoping someone says it worked for them with a non-Discover card.Yep I just added a Dell Inspiron 6000 to my cart used the $750 off $1899 and Discover $50 off $999 coupon, both stacked. Since I'm not ordering I didn't submit my cc details, so I'm not sure if the $50 is later voided or not. Details of the Discover $50 off $999 coupon are:Dell Home Customers: Save $50 off select systems over $999! Free shipping offers may be used in conjunction with this offer. This coupon may not be used for refurbished systems. Limit 1 per customer, 1 use per coupon.

Guest Frieked Posted August 29, 2005 Posted August 29, 2005 Anyone know if/when Dell is going to be running one of those $300 computer with free 15 or 17" flat panel included dealies? I know the machines aren't the greatest...but my parents are running a PII 466 with win98 and it's sooooo slow. It's painful waiting for the thing to even startup. Takes about 10 minutes before you can actually start doing anything.
RossMAN Posted August 29, 2005 Posted August 29, 2005 Frieked, Usually it's a Dimension 3000 with 17" CRT (not flat panel LCD) for $299 - $349 with free shipping. Those happen I'd say every 3-4 weeks. Last month they had a hot deal on a 3000 with 15" LCD for $248 shipped, I got in on that :)
