  1. I was able to purchase a 2 year additional extended warranty, but it was $199.00. That is the flat rate for all plasmas. I was able to purchase it a week after purchasing the 42 plasma.

I have yet to open mine, how is the picture quality? Is it ok, average, great, or very close to what we want an HDTV to look like?

    Thanks,

    Kraig

Yup, DVDs look really good. Stand Def through S-video on my Direct TV looks great as well. Some channels are better than others but overall all channels look very good.

  2. Exactly. And honestly, other than needing it to hang on the wall or flat out

refusing to spend the extra $400-$500, there really is not a reason to buy an

    EDTV versus an HDTV.

$400-$500 more now... or a whole new set a year or two from now... or

worse yet, once you realize you don't have HD and want it, since I think

there's plenty of HD content currently to warrant wanting an HD set already.

And that's before movies start coming out on HD DVD or BluRay when it's out

and affordable (which will be within the next year or two).

But anyway, I think we've all explained the technologies well enough for

people reading this to have a better understanding of what's going on. If

you just want an extra set and already have an HD set and you want a slick

looking plasma for a gameroom or something, then this is a good deal.

Otherwise, my advice is to spend a little bit more and get an HD set, DLP or

LCD projection instead of buying a plasma set... especially if you're going

to just put it on a stand anyway. :)

Some people dont consider $500+ a little more.

It's not like you'll have to throw away your EDTV Plasma in the next year or 2. For one, there is no whay all broadcasting in the next 1-2 years will be 100% HD....and 2....EDTVs can accept HD signals, albeit they will reduce them to 480p. So an EDTV still has an acceptable shelf life

  3. uscboy, you are preaching to the wrong client base. People who bought those $997 EDTVs wouldn't spend $1800 on an HD version.

Well, I bought my $997 EDTV Plasma and am going to buy a 56" HD DLP:yup:

EDTV will be used in living room by girlfriend and I to watch DVDs and standard def broadcasts on Direct TV

HD DLP will be used in home theater in basement to watch HD DVDs (upconverted) HD broadcasts and standard def broadcasts. Personally, I dont feel like spending $800 for 2 Direct TV high def receivers

  4. An HD plasma wouldn't make a difference. If you have any HD tv be it plasma, LCD, DLP it will make Standard Definition TV look worse. These tv's are built for resolution that is a lot higher than that of Standard Definition.

No offense, but you should have done some research before buying the TV, if you did this would be one of the first things you discovered. I found this out when I was in the market for an HDTV. You are basically going to have to watch only HD channels, tolerate the quality of the SD channels on your new tv, or just wait until all channels are broadcast in HD (may be awhile, some say a year or two others say 5+).

Thats where EDTV is more beneficial. I have a 42" EDTV Plasma hooked up to my Direct TV. It makes all the channels look better and it is especially great on DVDs where DVDs play at 480p which is the EDTVs native resolution.

  5. DVDs look great on my Wal Mart Plasma due to the fact that EDTV's native resolution is 480p which is what a DVDs resolution is.

EDTVs are not bad if you want a great picture for DVDs and regular definition broadcasts. The plasma I got for $997 at Wal Mart is money WELL spent as I got a 42" plasma that blows away my 31", 13 year old Hitachi.

Would I have gotten the EDTV Plasma to be a center piece of my High Def home theater? Absolutely not.

Would I get an EDTV just to replace an older CRT or if I wanted a better picture with standard def and an awesome picture with regular DVDs...Hell yea

  6. I got it. Arrrived at 1:30am, waited until 5am. Talked about GottaDeal like it was king. Apparently quite a few others knew about it. After all of the research I did on the TV and the deals, I was able to get some of us entertained for quite some time.

The EDTV is going to be AWESOME for my 55+ dvd collection. It sounded like the EDTV was going to be crap at first, until I actually did some research on it.

    TvBob summed things up great.

Yea, I am impressed with mine...especially on DVDs!!!

  7. Wasn't this available online. I went on Walmart.com, and it showed you could order online. Was this a mistake like BB?

Yuo could order online, however I didnt know if it was going to be in stock by the time I got around to it and I didnt know how much shipping was

  8. I picked it up. I got in line at 3:40 a.m. and stood in 12 degree weather just for this. There were about 20 people in front of me but they all went for the computers and 15" lcd. It is a sweet tv for the price.

Man, that sucks...My WM was a 24 hour one so I was nice and toasty inside:)

  9. More edtv ignorance. It's funny, over at the avsforums, of course they have some regular people, but they have an awful lot of tv gurus and when this debate comes up, edtv gets a lot of support, probably more than hdtv. The fact is its still very much worth upgrading to hdtv even if you have an edtv set, hd on a high end edtv set will look better than on a low end hdtv set. While hd obviously will look better on an hdtv plasma, it stil looks extremely good on an edtv.

But we covered this extensively in the tv thread. My view, like many others, is that you are not a dummy at all if you buy an edtv. The fact is edtvs can do things better than hdtvs, not just that they are a cheap shorterm solution. Standard tv looks better on higher end edtvs, and dvds in some cases as well. You can decide to invest in the future, but is it worth it to suffer with poorer sdtv for who knows how much longer, especially when hdtv still looks great on edtv? Why in the world should you outlaw a type of set that outperforms hdtv sets in several ways?

I laugh when people say most tv is not in HD, that's just not true at all. Even people with the most hd channels, and many others do not have any particularly since satellite companies don't plan to offer universal hd anytime soon, still watch standard tv for a vast majority of the time....keep in mind most hd channels still have relatively few hd programs. This is changing, but not nearly as fast as some like to believe....hdtv has been a painfully slow spreading technology.

But I always say don't be so fixated on whether it's an edtv or hdtv. Just try to look for a deal on a higher end , a higher end edtv will always be better than a low end hdtv. There is more to the quality of a set than resolution.

Well put. I do not think there is anythong thing wrong with purchasing a 42" Plasma EDTV set for $997 especially if you are like me, just looking for a nice inexpensive TV to upgrade an old 31".

The Wal Mart Plasma most definitely looks better than my older Hitachi in standard definition on Direct TV.

It blows away my old Hitachi when watching DVDs.

For $997, I think it is an awesome deal for what you get.

  10. Local channels via satellite services are compressed more than the other channels. They're still digital.

Also, that set it an EDTV, right? No offense, but someone should outlaw EDTV... just don't get pissed off when you sign up for HD and can't do HD with that TV set.

Yea, it's EDTV...but...this is just to replace my 13 yr old 31" Hitachi for casual viewing.

By the way, it accepts 720p and 1080i signals....obviously you wont get the full benefit of both but it accepts them nonetheless

I am getting a 56" Sammy DLP for my basement for my home theater:D

  11. I honestly didnt thin I was going to get one. I arrived at WM at 4am and there were about 150 people in this huge line. Luckily that wasnt the line for the plasmas. They have the Plasmas and 15" LCDs in Sporting Goods.

I got in line about 4:05 and there were 15 people in front of me. I had called earlier and was told there were only 6 Plasma in. Come to find out they had 12 in!! A couple of people ahead of me didnt get the Plasmas. I got the 10th out of 12. There were like 50 people behind me.

Everything was organized and fairly orderly.

I hooked up the Plasma to my Direct TV receiver and it looks good. Some of the local stations dont look as good which I dont understand why since Direct TV is all digital. I wasn't expecting anything like a $2500 Panasonic plasma but for $997, its a great TV!!!

  12. If your store is a 24 hour WM, there will be a line in front of each palatte.

They don't shut the store down and make you line up outside.

Yea, mine is a 24 hour WM...

So, If they have 6 Plasmas and I see more than 6 people in line by the pallate...I guess I should go home?

  13. So, if I just wanted to replace my 31", 12 year old Hitachi, with something just for average TV viewing, the Wal Mart Plasma would not be worth it? All I will have hooked up to it is a Direct TV receiver (non HD).

I will be buying a 56" Sammy DLP for my basement in the future :-)

    :g_shrug:

  14. So far it seems most stores have 4-5... i dont think there is a way in hell i'm gonna get one...

What do i do? Run to Electronics and tell them to get me one? There are big, so i dont think it would be on the floor, would it?

How did you find that out? Is there a way to find out what store is going to carry the Plasmas without calling them all?

  15. You people do not listen. Cheap is dear!!

Rather save your $xxx this year and spend it and the other $xxx next year that you wish you had not spent on this low price-low quality WM item.

There are numberous AV forums where people have been discussing the Viore.

When it works, it is wonderful (HD feeds only). SD is very grainy. DVD playback has a problem reproducing blacks(similar to LCD).

Good plasmas create almost perfect Blacks - Tube TV produce the best.

A number of people had their set a few weeks or a few months and the unit died on them. Some replaced them only to have it do the same thing.

I would almost imagine those trucks will have to drag at least 50-60% of those units back within 3-4 months of BF.

The included ATSC tuner is only standard def and you will need a HD settop box to playback HD feeds.

Also people have complained that SD and DVD images have a green halo around the characters. Not good.

You are better off going with the Magnavox if you have to. Mag does not produce this item anymore, so that is why it is being sold off. It seems Philips is now supporting all technical issues(they are partners). However, the magnavox is the same res as the Viore 1024x768.

Almost all of the name brands (Philips, Pioneer, Sony, Toshiba, Panasonic) 42" HD plasma sets have either 1280x768 or 1366x768 resolution. Much better pixel density.

Again I would pocket my money for next year and spend double for a real Plasma.

In terms of LCD vs. Plasma, Plasma is a superior technology due to its fast refresh, darker blacks, no screen door effect, and brighter image and more uniform contrast.

The new 1080P LCD (DLP and LCOS technologies) sets are a step above the current Plasmas with resolutions of 1920x1080 progressive where Plasma is at 1366x768 or 1280x768 in the 42" and larger sizes. However, their prices are also that much higher.

You have to make your choice but I can tell you that the Viore is like a Kia(minus the 10yr warranty), it will get you from point A to B for a fraction of a Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic but it will not feel the same or hold its own over time.

We have a 50" Pioneer that is 4 yrs old and looks as good today as it did when it was 1 yr old(conveyed with the house). It has been turned on and off constantly during the day without a hint of croaking. We bought another 42" last year and the old 50" looked as good as the new one. The color saturation, contrast, image reproduction and brightness are unbelievable. Even Standard def feeds are good quality(about the same as my 32" std def tube).

    So here is to quality!!!
