  1. SteamOS is coming out. It is a new operating system which is based upon a Linux build, but has been structured to run most games. Where the system shines, is it's ability to allow the user the ability to stream games, movies and music among shared devices. Many are hoping that this will eventually usurp any console out there, due to the PC being the stronger candidate from the upgradeability standpoint. Steam will roll out a FREE operating system, and it can be downloaded and set up on almost any PC. Since it is Linux based, it can be dual booted as well. You will have access to your Steam library, since the games are tied to your account, not the machine. Steam will eventually roll out their own Steambox in the near future. I am hearing that this may be customized by the end user as well. Many modern PCs can be upgraded with ram, video card or bluray player as the customer sees fit. This will allow you to have the best of both worlds. From this platform, you can run all of your PCs, share the games, and get great deals on games from all of the indie game resellers out there, usually 8 or more games(a good portion are AAA games) bundled for about $6. The major problem with consoles is the cost of the games, which can be prohibitive to most budgets. For parents on a tight budget, this is a godsend, since you can buy games super cheap (I can list links upon demand) and your children can access them through each other's computer on your own home network.

My son has pretty much abandoned the PS3 for Steam.  Still uses it for Netflix and occasional gaming.  He hasn't requested the PS4, but a Steam controller and Steam credit.

  2. Saltine Toffee

    1 sleeve of saltine crackers

    1 cup butter

    1/2 cup light brown sugar

    12 oz semisweet chocolate chips

1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Line a jelly roll pan with parchment paper, folding the edges up so the sides are covered as well. Lay the saltines in a single layer on the parchment paper.

Melt butter and brown sugar in a medium saucepan over medium to medium-high heat. Bring to a boil and cook for 3 minutes, stirring constantly. Adjust temperature as necessary.

Pour butter-brown sugar mixture over the saltine crackers. Spread the mixture evenly, working quickly as it will begin to cool.

Put jelly roll pan in over and bake for 15 minutes.

Remove the pan from oven and immediately sprinkle with the chocolate chips and chopped nuts. Press lightly.

Put the pan into the refrigerator and refrigerate for one hour. When the bark has finished cooling, remove the pan from refrigerator. Using your hands or a pizza cutter, break or cut the bark into pieces.

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. If layering the bark, place sheets of waxed paper between the layers to prevent sticking.

  3. We always take a nice box of candy (See's or Godiva), a poinsettia/holiday bouquet or a coffee gift from Starbucks (they usually have a couple of pounds in a nice box). We try to make it consummable, since you can't always guess someone else's taste.
  4. My son plays with these all the time. You do not need the arena. Basically, the balls and the cards. Some cards are metal and some are not. They only open on the metal ones (I believe all balls come with at least one of these). The non-metal are for enhancing the "battle." The series are not important. Get something to keep them in, like a tin or ziplock (it need not be "Bakugan" themed!), because they are really small and pets think they are fun. Or, you can stick them all on your refrigerator like we did one day (they are magnetic and this makes them open up and stay there).
