  1. Retailers aren't in the business to give you good deals - they're in the business to make money.  Back when I first started hitting the BF sales (mid-1990's), they had to offer great deals to draw the crowds early on a cold morning the day after thanksgiving.  Now, people camp out for mediocre deals, so where's the incentive to give bigger discounts?  Of course the deals have gotten worse - retailers don't need to offer great deals anymore, because people will show up anyways.

  2. I still miss Black FRIDAY, back when it was on FRIDAY!   :gdangry4:

I have a serious question to ask everyone.  In the past few years, we've noticed that stores are opening earlier and earlier, most now on Thanksgiving evening instead of Friday morning, but my question is how likely are you going to take time away from your families to save what doesn't appear to be a decent amount of money anymore?  I don't want a dragged out explanation, if possible, but I'm just curious if everyone is feeling like last year was a waste of time.

Also, what seems to be the must have items this year?  What is it that everyone really wants that you would be willing to fight the crowds, lines and endless grouchy people to obtain it?

    Thanks!

(My family and I are discussing whether or not we're going to bother with shopping this year because we hated the need to be at the stores during dinner, which was our normal time for eating our big meal.  In order to get to the sales last year, some of our family members arrived too late from their drive to be able to eat with us and relax before we had to rush out the door and most of the sales were not good enough or the supply was not adequate to make all the hassle worth it.)

Personally, I won't go to the stores that open on Thanksgiving.  It's probably a pointless boycott, but I'm still not going out on Thanksgiving.

  3. The deals definitely aren't what they were 20 years ago, when I first starting hitting the sales.  Back then, the stores really had to work to get people to show up at 6AM on the day after Thanksgiving, so the discounts were much bigger.  The prices really were prices you'd only see once per year.  These days, with people willing to camp out to save $100, if that, it's just not worth it.  The stores have seen that most people really don't follow prices and just fall for the hype that these discounts are amazing, so they don't have to offer much to get uninformed consumers to camp out for weak deals.

  4. I simply don't go anymore to the stores that draw the crowds and the campers.  Stores like Best Buy, Target, Wal-mart, etc. are off my list these days, unless I can get it online.  Otherwise, I just go to the secondary stores, where the crowds are manageable and there's plenty of stock of the things I want.  The crowds and lines just aren't worth it at the big stores anymore.

  5. I find no "thrill" in dealing with huge unruly crowds, long waits in line, standing in the cold, etc.  I'm happy to order online and not leave the house.  Last year I still went out, but it was only to the 'lesser' stores, like Home Depot, which had a great deal on a pre-lit Christmas tree.  We got there ~30 minutes before opening, were first in line, and got served coffee and donuts by the store manager.  More people showed up later, but it was still a very small crowd, and no one went crazy when the door opened.  It was a great experience.  I haven't done Best Buy, Walmart, or the other local stores which attract the mobs for years, and I don't really miss it either.

  6. This is why the BF deals have declined over the years - the rubes will line up anyway, so why should the stores cut prices drastically when they can get the suckers with very little discounting. It reminds me of when my local Circuit City liquidated. They brought in a liquidation company which changed all the price stickers to reflect higher prices, and then gave 10% off that. They actually had a line out the door and around the building full of people who fell for the "liquidation" deals which were actually higher than the regular prices had been the week before!
  7. having a choice doesn't make it right. Some people do the black friday out of need not want. The low prices allow them to have the type of Christmas they enjoy and can afford.

NEEDS are things like food, shelter, clothing, and medical care. Electronics and all the rest are just WANTS. I've never met a person who needed a flat-panel TV just to stay alive.

  8. In my mind the deals really haven't been that great in recent years.

I definitely agree. But from the retailer's point of view, where's the incentive to offer good deals anymore? If people will still line up and camp out overnight for some mediocre 10% savings or whatever, why should retailers lose more money offering better deals? In the 15+ years I've been going out on Black Friday, I've noticed the crowds have gotten bigger and bigger as the deals have gotten worse and worse. People are clearly rewarding retailers for offering lesser deals.

  9. Aside from that, 60hz is where some people were complaining about blurred motion. Plasma's are at 600hz I think. Most decent LCD's have 120 - 240hz refresh rates.

So what are your thoughts on the 120 vs. 240hz debate in LCDs/LEDs? I'm looking at possibly upgrading to 55", and do plan on watching lots of sports and action movies. Of course the sales people in stores are saying there's going to be motion stutter at 120hz, but I'd expect them to say that.

  10. Don't get me started on the 1080p stuff... :)

720p is just fine by me. Its certainly not worth paying extra for a format where the human eye can't tell the difference in most living rooms/family rooms in the nation, let alone the fact that pretty much nothing is broadcast in true 1080p...

I've read that starting at 50"+, you can start to see the difference between 720 and 1080 but they both look essentially the same to me at 50" when I see them on display, so I'd probably be happy with 720 as well. We currently have a 720 42" Panasonic plasma in the living room, and it looks fantastic.

Over Labor Day weekend, HH Gregg had a LG 50" plasma for $499, so keep your eye out - you may find a similar deal between now and Black Friday, and not have to wait in the BF lines! Good luck!

  11. Come on, Luck be a Lady.

Daddy want a 50" (+) Panasonic Plasma for under $500!!!

You and me both! Well, I'd like LED, but a cheap-but-decent 50"+ HDTV is definitely on my target list. You could get your Panny for under $500, since 50" Panasonics are down to $599 already at Costco. 720p though, but still, they look pretty good!
