  1. I have 4 children 2 girls, and then 2 boys. Their b-days fall on Jan, Feb, Mar, and Nov. So, I kinda divide the gifts up. Since their b-days and Christmas are so close. Last year I bought my 10 yr old (boy) the Nintendo 3DS XL for $150, so this year he is only getting two video games. I was able to get him Pokemon X and Y for $14 each at Kmart. My younger son is 7, and this year I bought him a Nintendo 3ds XL as well. Same price! And was able to get Super Smash Bros. and Kirby for around $50 or a bit less. My eldest girl is 15, and was able to get her a Samsung Galaxy really cheap from MetroPCS. As for her younger sister who is 13, it's a bit harder. No stockings or Advent calendars this year, not in the budget.

  2. I'm trying to feel it,but we buried my beloved husband of 24 1/2 years yesterday. He'd been battling breast cancer for 3 1/2 years and he finally succumbed on Mon. Nov. 24. Last Christmas was the one to live in our memories.

Ordinarily,we would have put up our tree today but I just couldn't.

My brother is staying with us so he will help us do it tomorrow.

It will be different (to say the least) this year at Christmas time.I can't even say how our Christmas will be this year.I will be trying to make it a good one for the kids but my heart sure isn't in it as of right now.

I'm so sorry for your loss....

Slowly getting my mojo back. Baking all those cookies did help. So did a fun time at my work party. Been pumping my favorite Christmas tunes in my car since Thanksgiving afternoon and that's helping too. I've placed a stash of my spare change in the car so, if I'm going into a store with a bell-ringer out front, I'll always have a little something to drop in that kettle.

revecca: You may feel like you're failing miserably right now but I'm sure your kids are appreciating (or will appreciate) the effort, even if it doesn't seem that way. Hang in there. My parents divorced when I was in college and my brother was just barely in high school. Mom tried her best to still give us a great Christmas and worried she wasn't making it, but brother and I both look back on those first few simple Christmases with fondness, as they were still filled with love.

    Thank you wittenlover! :)

  3. Mom got me started making Christmas ornaments when I was 5 years old.  The sequined kind, where you load the push pin and dip it in glue and place it in styrofoam.   I made them every year for both sets of grandparents, my mother (of course), my godmother and my teacher.  Did it every year since  (And I am now 53.)

Of course each year the ornaments became more complicated as I grew.   I gave them to my teachers all the way through High School too.   I had many teachers, who I saw years later, tell me they still had my ornament hanging on their tree.

I think the handmade card(s) or ornament(s) is the way to go.  It's thoughtful, it's sparkle-ly.  It'll keep the kid busy for a while at home, and it is something they can be proud of when they give the gift.

Simple stryofoam ornaments can be made by 5 or 6 years old (and even children with disabilities) with items from the craft store.  Pick up a styrofoam ball.   Pick out either a package of multicolored 10mm sequins or pick 3 colors of 10mm sequins. (Such as green, red and gold).  Pick out a bead to go on top of the sequin and then start pinning them into the ball.  (Put the bead on the pin, then a sequin and then dip the end of the pin in glue before inserting it into the ball.)  Cover the ball.  Pin a piece of ribbon on top of the styrofoam ball as a hanger when the ball is full.  (Note: You can use 8mm sequins as the child gets older.  10mm is easier for those tiny fingers.)

When the child is older, you can get them an ornament kit for something more challenging.

Cheap but sturdy ornaments can also be made from plastic beads.  Icicles, angels, candlesticks etc.  Directions can be found online, or holler and I can post the directions for which ever one you want.  I have had kids as young as 3 make these.  And they are very proud when they are done..  And the ornaments last many years too.

I remember those!!!! My friend made several so when she had her first Christmas with her husband to be, that they had ornaments for their first Christmas together.

  4. Thanksgiving Cupcakes

    Author: MOMables

    Cuisine: Lunch

    Ingredients

    • won ton wrappers (you can find them in the produce section)
    • leftover turkey, shredded
    • leftover stuffing of choice
    • leftover cranberry sauce
    • Gravy, if desired

    Instructions

    1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
    2. Mix shredded turkey with stuffing.
    3. Reheat the turkey and stuffing before filling the won ton wrappers.
    4. Spray your cupcake pan with non stick spray.
    5. Gently push one won ton wrapper into each cupcake cup.
    6. Spoon 1 Tablespoon of turkey/stuffing mixture into each won ton wrapper.
    7. Spoon about 1 teaspoon of cranberry sauce over each top.
    8. Make a second layer of won ton wrappers. Gently push the won ton wrapper in the opposite direction and put another 1 Tablespoon of turkey/stuffing mixture. Hold the second layer of cranberry sauce- the top cranberry sauce is added at the end.
    9. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy on the edges.
    10. Leave your cupcakes in the pan to let them cool slightly before you remove them.
    11. Add a spoonful of cranberry sauce over each cupcake (it's the frosting!) and have gravy on the side to dip if desired.
  5. Our bus driver is from Montenegro, and the parents are not too kind with him. Last year I got him a nice bottle of wine, my youngest son who was having a hard time adjusting to going to school (Kindergarten, never went to Pre-K), the bus driver was really good with him. I was waiting all year for him to kick him off the bus. Lol!

What about Christmas ornaments, or is that too blah? Our neighborhood TJ Maxx always has these really beautiful keepsake ones.

  6. Bake!

I give yummy hand made old fashioned yeast based bread loaves.  Sometimes I do braids, but usually just loaf pan loaves.

I can get a huge bag of flour at Costco for less than $8 and I always have a big container of yeast on hand.  With that and just a couple other items I can make 30 or more loaves!!

    Nothing beats fresh homemade bread.

What a brilliant idea! I would love to try this one year

  7. I usually buy the teachers Visa gift certificates for the holidays. It gets harder each year because I have four and as they get older the more teachers they get. I am tempted this year to make things for them, and have my two girls help. What do you do for your child/childrens teachers? :)

  11. We started doing this years ago with my family, we go around the table and each of us say one or more things that we are thankful for. I was wondering if some of you would like to share what you're thankful for this year. I'll start, I'm thankful to God for my health, and for the health of those around me. I'm thankful for all the loving and supportive people God has brought into my life. I'm thankful for the roof over our heads, and the food on our table. I'm am thankful to those who serve our country....

  12. My parents tend to make too much and they eat for a whole month, so I have taken over. I don't make too much food just enough to last for Thanksgiving weekend. I have gotten on the organic/natural kick because of my illness, so everything is organic, and made from scratch, not boxes. Though, sometimes I do find organic ready made at a good price so I grab it. Lol! We made oyster stuffing one year, it turned out really tasty. My mother used to make stuffing with chestnuts, but since she passed away I haven't had it since. I've been dying to try to make turkey/brining first. I'm really looking forward to real mash w/gravy made from the turkey drippings.  :2letseat:
