  1. I am definitely in the minority and don't want summer to go away!  lol  I love the heat...and humidity!  I know, I'm weird.  :)

September started super crappy for me as one of our cats passed away.  :(  She was "my girl" so it's especially hard.  I'm glad she's no longer suffering, but I miss her little quirks.  The other cats aren't sure what's going on because the cat that passed was definitely boss lady.  They keep looking for her to make sure she's not going to jump out and smack them.  lol

I'm not really even thinking about gifts yet.  I don't have many people to buy for, so it's usually all done around BF.

  2. What a crazy month it’s been!

My Christmas lists got bigger...using DNA , I found my biological parents! My bio mom has passed away but I have 2 half-sisters from her and my biological father is still alive. He didn’t know I even existed so we have been getting to know each other. I have 1 half-sister from him. So long story short...I started 2018 as an orphaned only child and now I have a father again along with 3 sisters, a step mom, 2 nieces, a nephew and aunts, uncles and cousins!

  3. I can't wait to start the ad watch frenzy...curious to see if Kmart will not have an ad again this year (for those of us who still have a Kmart in town)...

We still have 2 left in Raleigh.  I find that I can often find lots of stuff on clearance for cheap there because nobody shops at either.  They still have a few aisles of pools stuff left, where Target and Walmart are out of everything at this point.

  4. I am putting the deposit down for our new in ground swimming pool today.  I have to start stocking up on pool stuff while it's clearance, so I can be ready for the spring!  So excited!!!  (And for those of you that have a pool, feel free to make suggestions on good toys, floats, etc.)

A link to an article about the pickup towers with a few pics.

We were one of the two test stores for these and had one for over a year (I'm in Wake Forest, NC area).  Several of my gifts last year had to be picked up at the tower and it was a fiasco.  I spent over an hour in the store, being sent from the tower to the layaway area back to the tower, etc.  There was a rep from the tower maker there and some higher ups from Walmart and the whole situation was super embarrassing to them (not enough to throw me a gift card or something tho lol).  I haven't used it since, but it sounds like they have worked out the kinks and it was successful enough to expand their usage.

  6. I am in the Raleigh-Durham area and the last two years have been a bust for me to get a bag.  I don't like to go out on Thanksgiving eve, so I always hit B&B on Friday morning.  "Sorry, we sold out last night" is what I have heard, so I am considering breaking my rule this  year.  Either that, or just break down and order it online.  Trouble with that is you can't stack discounts like you can in-store (i make a few smaller purchases to use multiple coupons in one visit to the store; in order to do that online, I have to pay for shipping of multiple shipments, which negates the coupons.  I guess I could just order the bag online, and then hit the store Friday am for my other purchases.....

Oh, and I have always been able to exchange scents from previous years for something that I like (not on the same shopping trip, but usually my next visit). I otherwise give the items in the bag as gifts to family members.  It's a win-win situation for me. :)

That's odd.  Which BBW did you check?  I picked up my DD on Friday after work (mid-day) at Crabtree and they still had some when I went by.  I hope you're able to get one this year!

  7. Here is a email I got from TRU.... says every item through 12/24

Here's more details on their policy - it specifically excludes Thanksgiving - Cyber Monday.  :(

    Our promise to you

The holidays are all about giving, and that means a lot to us. That’s why we’re introducing our Price Match Promise: Not only will we match competitors’ prices, we’ll donate $1 to Toys for Tots every time you price match in store, up to $1 million.

    Here are the basics:

    • We’ll honor a price match for in-store purchases. Simply go to Customer Service for assistance.
    • Items purchased must be identical to the items advertised–same brand, same size, same style and function–although variances in color will be accepted.
    • The original, complete competitor ad, with valid dates, must be presented at time of purchase. Advertisements presented via smartphone must be displayed on the competitor’s website or app. Online prices must be verifiable via the competitor’s website.
    • A price match may be granted at the time of purchase or within 14 days of purchase date with a valid receipt.
    • When 2 or more of the same item are purchased, price match will be limited to 2 of those items.
    • Prices are matched after deducting any Toys“R”Us and/or Babies“R”Us coupon savings and other offers from our price.

    We do match:

    • Identical items in local retail competitors’ print advertisements—same brand, same size, same style and function, although variances in color will be accepted.
    • Pricing of an exact item at a competitor’s location that is the result of a single item percentage (%) off discount or coupon, such as a competitor’s coupon for 20% off a single item.
    • Toysrus.com and Babiesrus.com online pricing.
    • These competitors and their websites:
    • Amazon
    • Baby Depot
    • Barnes & Noble
    • Best Buy
    • buybuy BABY
    • diapers.com
    • Fred Meyer
    • GameStop
    • Hobby Lobby
    • JCPenney
    • Kmart
    • Kohl's
    • LEGO
    • Macy's
    • Meijer
    • Michael's
    • Sears
    • Target
    • Walmart
    • YoYo.com

    We don't match:

    • Competitors’ “Buy One Get One” (BOGO) offers
    • Competitors’ “Gift with Purchase” (GWP) offers
    • Out-of-stock or limited quantity items
    • A competitor’s price that is a result of a promotion requiring a minimum purchase amount (ex.: Save $10 when you spend $50), or that has other conditions, such as storewide or category-wide coupons
    • Advertisements and websites with typographical pricing errors
    • Any competitor’s advertised store or online pricing for Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday
    • Competitors’ online pricing that is limited to one day or less (ex.: doorbuster items, one-day deal, 6-hour sale, evening sale)
    • Subscriptions, Services or Marketplace products (ex.: pricing from a 3rd party selling products via a competitor’s site)
    • Clearance, closeout, damaged product, used, refurbished, open packages or liquidation sales

  8. For $30 cheaper it works for me but still undecided if we even want one at all yet

I was on the fence also, but snagged a Duo 6qt on Amazon Warehouse for $47. Might be the best $47 I ever spent. I did frozen chicken last night in 15-20 minutes. As someone who dislikes the kitchen/cooking, this cut my time in half, so I’m a happy camper.

  9. I will do my best to chime in here. At $499 the kind of gaming computer you are getting isn't exactly the best. At that price noting you want to run flight sims I would say it is the bare minimum I would opt for in regards to a gaming computer. At that price the processor you are getting will be good at first but won't exactly hold up in the long run. Same could be said for the graphics card. At $499 the machine is good enough for flight sims but don't expect to be able to run many modern games at max settings or high resolutions. If it was me and I could so I'd spring for the $799 machine on page 7. Yes it is $300 more but it offers a better CPU that will hold up in the long run and the GPU should last a little longer as well.

Couple of other notes. All these systems feature only 8GB of RAM which is fine if you are just playing games but if you try to multitask by running a browser with a ton of tabs open at the same time, forget about it. 8GB is not enough then. Also these systems only feature a 1TB hard drive. Which will probably fine in your case but an odd choice for a "gaming" PC. Basically I wouldn't expect super quick startups like you here about and that's because these systems aren't running any kind of an SSD.

One final note. That gaming monitor you referred to on page 3, I cannot for the life of me figure out why ANYONE would pair THAT monitor with the "gaming" PC shown on the same page. Why? Well that monitor features NVIDIA G-Sync. Nevermind what that does but it is a feature only usable if you have an NVIDIA graphics card which that PC does not. Besides I'm not even sure that that PC could even push the full limits of that monitor. Don't get me wrong there is a time and a place for a monitor like that but for you, here and now it is not. It is evident to me you want to keep this as reasonable as possible so I could just get a different monitor else where. Things I would look for are a resolution of 1920x1080 at the minimum. I'd look for a size of 24" or higher. If mentioned you want a response time of 5ms or less with 1ms being most optimal. Also, if possible, you want an IPS panel versus a TN panel. That last part might be tough though. A monitor like this shouldn't be more than $150 tops. This ad doesn't feature such a monitor so we will have to wait for more ads like Best Buy or Office Depot before I could recommend something specific.

That's all I got for now and I'm sure other members will chime in with even more info. If you have any questions, do ask.

Thank you so much for a thorough response. Looks like I have a lot to figure out!

  10. Computer gurus: Thoughts on the $499 gaming desktop on page 2?  My husband used to love to play Flight Simulator, but our current comp can't handle it.  Is this a good deal for the specs?  Also, does he really need a gaming monitor?  lol

    TIA
