  1. Wow! I'm glad I mostly shop online. I cannot believe the attitudes of the customer service people here. I served the public for 10 years, and I always approached people with politness and respect, and most of the time, I got it back. You can't approach people thinking they are bad or stupid and expect them not to notice. If it weren't for your customers, you wouldn't have a job...

I approached (and still do) customers with politeness and respect. At my current retail job, I get customer compliments and I've even received flowers for being so polite. And yet, when I was working at Target, I STILL had experiences with snotty, crabby customers who felt as though it was their job to make me feel like the gum on the bottom of their shoe. When you get treated like that, I'm not going to be all smiley and wanting to hold your hand while you do your shopping after I've dealt with customers like that. I'm sorry but I'm HUMAN. I have FEELINGS. I dealt with a lot of good people when I was at Target but there was a heck of a lot of rude, inconsiderate folks as well. THAT'S why I quit Target. Thank god the customers where I work now are wonderful.

Second, regarding your "if it weren't for your customers, you wouldn't have a job" comment. Yes, this is partly true. But does that still give them the right to be rude to me when I have done absolutely nothing wrong or mean to THEM? I treat my customers with respect and 90% of the time I end my conservations with customers with a smile and a "have a good day" but it's hard not to get upset when people treat you like crap on a daily basis. I do my job well but when I read things like what I've read on this thread, it hurts to know that people STILL think they deserve the best service imaginable with the low amount of money I get paid. It hurts and it makes me angry. I find it very hard to believe that some of you have worked in customer service because you clearly haven't been through what a lot of retail workers have to go through.

Also, if it weren't for retail workers, where would you shop? Regardless of how retail workers treat their customers, customers still NEED people in order for them to shop or else who would ring up your purchases, who would process your returns, who would stock the shelves, and who would answer your questions. So it's safe to say that customers need retail workers just as much as retail workers need customers. If you treat me with respect, I'll treat YOU with respect. Unfortunately, in the retail business, it's apparently OK to treat employees unfairly. And when employees don't go above and beyond in terms of customer service, people feel the need to complain about EVERYTHING. It's disgusting.

Lastly, I find it funny how people say that if we don't want to work in customer service, then we should find another job. Try finding a non-retail job where I live. It's impossible. I'm a college student currently and retail is the only job I can find. Some of you are just so darn ignorant.

  2. I think when people ask for gift ideas, it's just that. Ideas. When people ask me what I want for Christmas, I give them a general list of things I want but I don't get angry if I get something that's NOT on my list. I highly doubt that your mom and your MIL were not thinking about your son's wants and personality. If Christmas was about getting everything you wanted, where would the surprise be?

And btw, I'm not religious so this post has nothing to do with "counting your blessings".

  3. Aren't most people?

Minimum wage isn't a fair amount to pay folks that work in retail for all the crap they have to deal with. I don't think getting paid $13 an hour to work in a cubicle where you have the ability to shop on the internet is all that horrible. Sorry.

4gr8girls-You don't cuss IN FRONT of your kids. Like I said, who's to say that there were any customers around when the employee mentioned above made that comment.

  4. While I can see the valid points of all sides of this arguement I would like to point out 1 small thing. It seems that people here are always posting that TRU has bad customer service be it in store or online or when you call corporate, (remember the fiasco with the 12 deals of Christmas last year?). So why even bother shopping there when it is common knowledge that they are not only overpriced but their employees have the tendancy to be rude and uneducated about promotions and customer service?

One other thing, while the employee's choice of language was indeed unacceptable if she was on the sales floor where she could be heard by others the fact that she is not aware of a promotion? Gimme a break! TRU currently has how many different sales running right now? and the employees are expected to memorize everyone of them? I too have worked retail , (plus in-store unadvertised specials), and in a large store there is no way that you can keep track of every single promotion. Remember everything while attending to the needs of the customers in front of you, ringing people up, watching out for shoplifters, answering the phones, answering the questions of people who have no clue about what they buying, and on top of that you are suppossed to know about every product you sell and what is compatible with what, etc... its not an easy job even for the most people friendly person.

Thank you. I think people forget that retail workers are underpaid and overworked. Seems people think that retail workers are robots, not humans. You can only take so much crap from people before it starts to show. It's impossible for any human being to provide the best customer service possible when customers are continuously being rude.

And rennakay-I used to work at Target but I haven't for quite a few months. I'm not sure when the sales are anymore.

  5. Having worked over 15 years in Customer Service and in Manager capacity.. I can assure you that making comments after hanging up the phone to other employees is not acceptable. Its a toxic enivornment and is something that in most places you can be held accountable for.

I understand the season is busy adn they get calls, but it IS THEIR JOB to provide courteous and professional information to their guests/customers at all times. If they do not know a promotion they should find out. If they dont let you get a word in edgewise then they are not doing their job.

As far as the PP who said we are expecting people to hold our hands.. Are you joking.. it proves that people expect to be paid for doing nothing and not being helpful under the guise that it isnt par tof their job! PLEASE!

Id have been on the phone to corporate right away as well.

First of all, obviously it's not OK to make "rude" comments when other customers are around but (a) who's to say that they were customers around in the first place and (B) if it wasn't said loud enough so customers could hear, what does it matter? I worked in a store that prides itself on customer service and I've seen managers talk about customers to each other all the time. As long as other customers don't hear, it's not a problem.

Second, as a manager, you obviously didn't encounter the customers who expected employees to hold their hands. There have been numerous occassions where I've been asked to show customers where every single thing on their list is located in the store because they're too lazy to read the signs and look for themselves. I've had people yell at me because I don't know every single detail about a stupid toaster. I've had people get angry at me because they asked me for my advice on certain products and they didn't like my answers.

Maybe where you worked you didn't have the pleasure of meeting these customers but employees that work in stores like Target, Walmart, and Toys R Us witness these customers daily.

If the OP wants to call corporate, go ahead. I can almost guarantee you that the store manager will be notified of the situation, and he'll/she'll laugh it off and do absolutely nothing about it. My friend works at the customer service desk at Target and she gets numerous complaints about certain employees who have given "bad" customer service. You know what happens? Absolutely nothing. People like to complain about EVERYTHING, don't they?

  6. Costumer service is there to answer questions.... it is their JOB. She should not have been so exasperated with having to actually preform it. I think it is reasonable to want to be treated with some sort of respect. They should not act like you are inconveniencing them. I have worked costumer service too. Yes there are frustrating days, but still it was my JOB. I would have never thought to react in such a manner. The problem is we tend to accept mediocrity in service and rude employees have become the norm.

I don't see anywhere in the OP's post that suggests the employee was not doing their job. All I see is that there was some miscommunication and a simple "bye". If THAT'S bad customer service, then I guess retail employees are actually supposed to hold their customers' hands and bow down to them. As for the reaction at the end from the employee, like I said, it wasn't said directly to the OP so I don't see how that was rude. We've all had bad days at work and have had to deal with crappy people and that's why we vent to our coworkers about it which was exactly what the employee was doing.

Maybe it isn't bad customer service but an unrealistic high expectation??

  7. Um... It's not like she was saying the "God! These 'freekin' people want everything! It's rediculous!" thing directly to you. It's called venting. Obviously you didn't understand her and she clearly didn't understand you. And you posting this thread is YOUR vent.

I'm sorry but I've worked in retail and I've heard people complain about everything. I don't see the big deal in what "happened" to you. *shrugs*

  8. I have cousins who have peaked at their gifts when they were 7 and 8 and still do at 13, 15, and 19. I did it once when I was younger and I felt incredibly guilty about doing it. Just tell her that it's her choice if she wants to ruin Christmas. She's old enough to know it's wrong. Making her feel guilty is a decent "punishment".
  9. what is an endcap... im new at this,... sorry

An endcap is at the "end" of an aisle. Endcaps are displays of products that face the main aisle (these are front endcaps). Back endcaps are at the end of the aisles. Hope that makes sense.

About the toy sale, I worked during the last two sales and we had specific aisles dedicated solely for clearance toys. What is starting to be marked down now will probably eventually move to the clearance toy aisle when the time comes.

  10. Oh please. I've certainly worked retail. And, at our department store, we would have been fired for shopping off the clock. We had a specific procedure we had to go through to put anything on hold or to purchase. If we didn't we got fired. It is one of the many reasons, though, why customers hide stuff. Not just to keep the other customers from getting it at a lower price, but to keep the employees from snagging everything.

Target has a specific procedure also and although it's followed for customers, it isn't necessarily followed for employees. I don't think the big guys at Target care who buys these items, employees or customers, just as long as SOMEONE buys it.

When I was still at Target, an assistant department manager was fired for holding clearance stuff for herself. She wasn't fired necessarily because it was clearance items but because she was holding onto electronic items in the camera drawers located at the electronic registers and waiting for the prices to drop. As much as it is wrong for an employee to do this, it is also wrong for a customer to do it as well.

You (and by you I mean the general public) can't complain that employees are taking all the deals and still think it's ok to hide items for yourselves. That's why it doesn't bother me when I see employees taking sale/clearance stuff for themselves. The item should belong to whomever finds it first.

[Edited to add: Last year, I found tons of clearance Christmas stuff that was hidden. If I was in charge of, say, the health and beauty section and I found Christmas candy hidden behind the lotion, I'd place it in my cart. Every employee has a cart with them when their zoning the store at the end of the night. If they find stuff that doesn't belong in their section, they would place it in their cart, and when they got a chance, they would go up to guest services and bring the "abandons" to the front so they can get sorted. Now, if I found something on clearance that I wanted for myself, I could always keep it in my cart, and wait until I go on break to buy it. You're really not "holding" anything for yourself so it would be ok in my manager's eyes. That's what a lot of my fellow coworkers did. If a customer came by and looked in my cart and asked for the clearance item, I would have to give it to them. If no one asks, it's mine to buy. As long as these items are not sitting in a cart in the stockroom, I don't see what the big deal is.]

  11. So it can and does happen that Target employees have access to sale or clearance merchandise before the public...

And that is one of the perks of working at Target. Target employees are not SUPPOSED to buy things while they're on the clock but it happens and like I've said before, I've seen managers do it too. Heck, when I was at Target, my store manager was ok with us buying clearance stuff on the clock because he thought it was unfair that we couldn't get in on the deals just because we were working. Target actually has ETL-HR managers (which stands for Executive Team Lead-Human Resources) that are there specifically to make sure that employees are happy. So although they're going to discourage team members from buying clearance/sale items on the clock, they sure as heck won't stop them if it does happen.
