  2. I got an old car. Yesterday, I got my crappy Focus inspected. I was not willing to spend more than $1k getting it to pass inspection and not getting a sticker would have triggered a lot of changes in my life. Primarily, retirement. I would not have repaired the car, was unwilling to commute 18k miles per year in my F150, and was uninterested in any new or used car available to me at this time. The only recommendation of the inspection station was that I change the oil and rotate the tires. All green -- not a single yellow or red mark on their checklist. The service manager said I could put another 100k on the POS. I may. So I had the oil changed and rotated the tires. I'll have to find a better reason to retire than my crappy Ford Focus.
  3. April, bloody April. April is always a busy month for me. Because I was born in April, I must inspect and register my vehicles. Because I drive cars until no one can, this is usually an adventure. April is also the month Uncle Sam demands his pound of flesh. This year was just a little bit worse because our regulator was on the premises last week and I had to deal with a recall on one of my vehicles that would necessarily delay its inspection by a week. Assessment went well. recall was uneventful, and I finished my taxes this morning. So, on April 5, I am done except for two inspections and a visit to the tax collector's office. I rewarded myself for this with a bloody mary, two slices of reheated pizza, Top Gun, and a nap. Having checked in here, I am unofficially off the clock. Happy Shopping!
  4. Al Gore promised me beachfront property and endless summers. He said my kids would not remember snow. Next time I see him, I'm going to punch him in the throat! My kids, btw, were remembering snow pretty well removing ten inches of the heavy, wet variety from my 220' driveway. Seriously, though, I love the seasons. My yard is beautiful and my F150 is earning it's keep. Spring will be here soon enough. Then everyone will complain about bugs (except me...I solved my bug problem decades ago -- don't tell Al).
  5. Watching Television in 2025 This Christmas, I got my kids televisions specifically for use as displays for gaming. The television I selected (Hisense 65U7N) just happened to have an ATSC 3.0 tuner, so I ran RG-6 from the UHF antenna in my attic to the one of the televisions. A channel scan found WGBH*NX, WBZ*NX, WCVB*NX, WBTS*NX, WFXT*NX, WWJE*NX, and WUNI*NX. All were rock solid at a distance of 35 miles and looked spectacular -- at least as good as the ATSC 1.0 counterparts. There was no interactivity that I noticed, and I was not impacted by DRM. Nothing to motivate me to avoid or embrace Nexgen TV. Apparently, I'm not alone in that assessment: ATSC 3.0: The future of broadcast TV spent another year in neutral | PCWorld BUT, I still watch broadcast television. These days, for the most part, my antennas are streamed to my televisions (and other devices) via the Sling TV app and AirTV Anywhere whole house DVRs. A bonus of this arrangement is that I can watch one stream out of my home. I have four of these and share these out-of-home streams with siblings and offspring. I would say that about 20% of my viewing is broadcast television -- news in the morning and when something is happening, sports on occasion, current network offerings (I love Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage), and syndicated programming. I enjoy Pluto TV as well. From time to time, I survey other (FREE) streaming television. Last week, I spent some time exploring Roku TV. I found the Live TV Guide and the Graham Norton Show channel. Graham Norton is the best talk host since Johnny Carson. He's an Irish guy who hosts a talk show in England (which is funny to them). Like Carson, he has the gravitas to entice the big stars to cross the pond for an interview. Also like Carson, he is always very well prepared and gets a great interview out of the most interesting guests. Tubi TV is streaming the Super Bowl in 4k next weekend: How to Stream Super Bowl LIX for free on Tubi Happy New Year!

  7. My HR rep lives in a different state from where I work. She has never been to the facility, has never responded to an email from me, and has never answered her phone when I have called during business hours. There is something to be said for being able to darken an enemy's door from time to time.
  8. No. 80% of my job is administrative. I can do that in the office or remotely. 20% of my job has to be executed in a designated space. If I do those things outside the space, it's a felony. While the specifics of the infraction are above my paygrade, I manage to be compliant.

  14. I think it's fine. The lenovo gives you a bigger screen, twice as much storage, and a faster CPU for the same price.
