best vaccuum for hardwood floors?

Recommended Posts

So, I'm getting DW a vaccuum for mother's day (actually, it's an excuse to get her a vaccuum...she's getting other stuff)

but we have only hardwood floors. What would be the best vaccuum for that? I've been looking at the Dyson DC14 and DC24...we don't have any animals except for a terrier that doesn't shed...

any suggestions for a sub 400 dollar vac?

Do you have rugs?

For our hardwood, we use a simple bagless Dirt Devil type vac. I pick one up about once a year or so for around $40. We do have rugs and for those, I have a bag vac, Hoover I think, that ran about $150 and was rated above Dyson.

I know peeps love their Dyson, but I think they are overrated and hear just as much crap about them.

I swiffer (dry) for the dust and into the corners then run the dirt devil to pick up the bigger stuff. Has worked for me for years.

no rugs to speak of...two runners in the kitchen is about it.

We're looking for something that will last longer than a dirt devil...we have one now, and it's on its last legs...

I'm actually leaning towards a canister vac now...

I worry about anything heavy that will carry around those tiny, sand like pebbles on the wheels of some of the heavier vacs and thus will scratch the floor. I have noticed that with my heavier one which is why I swiffer then do the vacuum thing.

Anyway, sorry wasn't more help...I prefer the cheaper ones for such a job....and a dry swiffer.

oh, you've been a big help...you make a great point about the canister vacs...pulling around pebbles would be a BAD thing...and with a 3 year old, there's sure to be pebbles all over the place...and even those I can't see can do damage...

back to the drawing board *LOL* Maybe I'll just go to WalMart and go for the dyson price matched to Target and get that 80 dollar gift card (if it works that is...otherwise I'll just go to Target)

if anyone else has suggestions, please, let me know...
