sherriem30 Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 Wow! This is on my Christmas List! I will have to let my DH know!!:)
zzyzx Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 I guess Family Tree Maker Version 16 is their 2006 edition of the software and the latest is 2009 version. I wonder why they are still selling the older version 16... Anyone have experience using this software? Any advice on what is the top choices for genealogy software? I have a older version of Family Tree Maker that is well out of date. I have been thinking of getting something newer. I have GEDCOM data file to import to the new program.
zzyzx Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 Family Tree Maker 2009 - Free Shipping for Limited Time USD 39.95 On Sale: USD 29.95 The Official Guide to Family Tree Maker 2009 USD 24.95 On Sale: USD 17.45 OR Family Tree Maker 2009 Basic Bundle - Free Shipping for Limited Time USD 64.90 On Sale: USD 48.67 I don't get it, bought separately the total is $47.40, why would you buy the bundle for $48.67? You would think they would knock off the price to encourage you to buy both with the bundle. I guess buying the guide by itself doesn't have free shipping. Strange.
zzyzx Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 Now I'm really confused about this software. Apparently, there are three version of the 2009 version of the software and I can't figure out which version is actually for sale here. Check Amazon.com (Linky) for reviews and why some have chosen to stay with Version 16. If this sale is for 2009 essentials version, you get a better price at Amazon.com

It's really nice in that you can now have two family tree files open at onces. Beyond that, I'm not sure theres really that many new features. I guess it depends on what old version you're using. I usually upgrade every few years, so I don't remember what the older versions have, or don't have, as features.
inluvstill Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 The newest version is vista compatible. The older version would not work on my mom's vista. She is bummed, she paid full price for this!! Great deal!
zzyzx Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 I ended up buying Family Tree Maker v16 STANDARD edition on ebay for: $10.89 CD in Sleeve (no box) $5.95 shipping/handling ----- $16.84 = Total If anyone is looking at getting this software especially the 2008 or 2009 editions, read the reviews on Amazon.com first. I decided to stay with v16 for now. Apparently, Encore started with a whole new code base when they switched programming language starting with 2008 version of Family Tree Maker. The 2008 and 2009 version lacks several key features from the last version of the old language code (version 16). I think I'll let the hard core FTM users let me know when the new code base is up to par. I've fallen too many times for the "new and improved" software releases to know new isn't always better then the old. I guess that is why Encore is still offering to sell v16.
Kayakmom Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 I didn't read all of the posts here but I can answer your question about why they still sell version 16. Many users really prefer it and did not like the 2008 upgrade so people (including me) opted to stay with ver. 16. The 2009 version is supposed to correct issues in 2008 and I believe when I broke down and bought 2008 this summer it came with a free upgrade to 2009. It is a totally different format. Personally, I really prefer version 16 but I've now upgraded to 2008 because it's the way the software is going.
sherriem30 Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 The Family Tree Maker 2009 Essentials, Family Tree Maker 2009 Platinum and Family Tree Maker 2009 Deluxe are all the same programs that are sold exclusively at retail stores. The only difference between them, is the amount of free trial time that comes packaged with them to Ancestry.com. We do not sell these versions online at Ancestry.com. We just only sell the installation disk. If there is anything else with which we might assist you, please let us know. zzyzx Posted December 4, 2008 Posted December 4, 2008 The Family Tree Maker 2009 Essentials, Family Tree Maker 2009 Platinum and Family Tree Maker 2009 Deluxe are all the same programs that are sold exclusively at retail stores.I suppose this holds true with the editions of Family Tree Maker Version 16. The v16 Standard has 6 months of ancestry.com access. I'm still waiting for my copy to show up in the mail. One of the down side of getting the rock bottom price for the version 16 software from a vendor on eBay is that the shipping time is up to 14 days.
