I bought 2 gen 1 shuffles a couple of years ago for Christmas and they didn't work. Apple paid to have them sent back and then they sent 2 that did work.

I bought my brother an iPod Nano refurb. I've played with it to make sure it works. It's all good.

I have bought 5 refurbished iPods (nanos,mini, shuffles). They all have worked with NO problems. You save a ton of money, plus it still comes with a 1-year warranty. Mine have always looked like new. I cannot afford the brand new ones, so this is a great option. Hope this helps.
