Why are these dang things so expensive? Somebody school me on the goodness of GPS and what it does - I'm clueless.

My Axim X30 and Dell GPS only cost me ~$300 total. I'm not sure what the advantage of having one of these is.

These are more expensive because they are dedicated devices. This one has a 20GB hard drive with all the maps loaded, unlike a PDA where you'll most likely only be able to have a smaller area loaded on a memory card. They also usually have many for features than the GPS apps found on PDAs. Kind of the same reason people with PDAs still use dedicated MP3 players.
