katiesmommy01
So i've been paying Comcast $3 (plus tax) a month for the past 4 1/2 yrs to rent their cable modem...it occurred to me (yes, slow learner here) that I can buy a cable modem and save a bundle over time! I could've bought 3 by now... So, does anyone know of any good cable modems for not so much $$$? TIA!
sas377
If you have a local freecycle group, you can join and post a wanted ad. People are always offering them up in my freecycle groups. Freecycle is a yahoo groups thing. Other than that, we liked out DLink.
conj
don't suppose comcast will sell you one.... (like the one already in your house which is probably an older model that they could not rent again if you were to buy one somewhere else...) booga12345
You know we have a cable internet modem that we rent from our local cable company too. I think we pay like $4.99 a month and after renting it for over 4 years have forgot all about it. Wow, now I feel kinda dumb. That is close to $300 we have spent. Now I think I am also gonna look to just buy one. I bet the one we buy now is sooo much more up-to-date. :)

Sue-Z-Q
I've had three, Motorola, D-Link and Linksys. I like (and have had the fewest problems with) Linksys. I hated and had the most trouble with the D-link (I would never recommend that brand), Motorola was middle of the road.
Crue2001
When I inquired about cable modem service thru Comcast awhile back, I asked them if I could purchase my own modem instead of paying the monthly rental for theirs. They said no, you could only use their modem. So, I went with Verizon and got DSL.

MandaJo111
I had considered buying one, but just before I did lightning hit my computer and modem. It fried the modem, but the computer was just fine -- go figure. So I just took it in and swapped it out for a new one. I decided I like being able to get a new one when needed -- even if it is just to the latest model without shelling out the mula for it -- which they have done for me without a problem. So for me, I am just gonna suck up the 3 a month.
mindshift
I got a free one when I signed up for Cox Cable. When I moved a year later I registered it with Comcast. After a year it went flaky so I started renting. Since then I have had 2 more die. We have a lot of lightning around here. I hate paying the rent, but when I start having connection issues I can just carry this box in and get a new one. I do own my own wifi router though. Sugar&Spice
I was in the same boat. I had been paying rent to have one and we had been having internet issues where we were constantly having to reset the modem. During troubleshooting, I kept asking if it could possibly be the modem itself.....of course, they kept saying no. I finally got disgusted and figured either way it was better if we bought one. I got a very gently used Motorola on ebay and haven't had a single problem since. Just remember to return the old one to the cable folks so they stop the charges. =)
Cassy
I too am on Comcast. But from day one I purchased my own Linksys and never have had any problems with it. Have had it for about 3 years now.
sas377
If/when you return it to Comcast, make sure you get a receipt. My fiancee returned his cable box and modem. When he got home, he noticed that they only wrote down return of the box and Comcast tried to keep charging him for the modem! They're very crooked and I am glad we live in a small pocket that doesn't have Comcast in my area!
Hill00
I have not read the rest of the posts, BUT if you call them and ask them about it they will take it off your bill. I live in IL and we have compcast and they took the charge off our bill totally.
