GO MOBILE IN 2008Vostro™ 1000 AMD Sempron™ processor Genuine Windows® XP Home Edition or Genuine Windows Vista® Home Basic 1GB memory* 120GB* hard drive CD/DVD burner 1-Year Limited Warranty* with Mail-In Service I have the same question as 4tiaras. I need a laptop for basic stuff like writing papers for school and downloading music to my iPod. Does anyone know if this would be sufficient for me? Thanks in advance. P.S. This is my first post - I just joined after lurking around for a while!

If that is all that you will be doing, then it will be fine. If you are planning on buying the laptop with Vista, then I would suggest an upgrade on the memory from 1gb to 2gb. You can purchase that from buy.com or somewhere else.

Can you tell me why I would need to upgrade the memory, and also would I need to do it right away! I really appreciate your help. :)
Marcster Posted January 24, 2008 Posted January 24, 2008 Thanks for your reply. Can you tell me why I would need to upgrade the memory, and also would I need to do it right away! I really appreciate your help. :)Welcome to the forum, craz4u3! Windows Vista is a total resource hog. You can "try" it at 1GB and add later if you like. It will be cheaper to install your own RAM anyway. About $42 for 2GB vs. Dell's fee of $100. However, if you are even remotely a power user (for instance, ripping music from a CD while browsing the Internet), then both limitations of the Sempron processor and the limitations of 1GB RAM are going to leave you feeling underwhelmed. Sempron and its Intel counterpart, Celeron, processors are fine for doing one task at one time, just surfing the internet or just writing e-mail, or just listening to music, etc. I wouldn't even try to edit photographs, edit video, record a DVD, or play "installed" games (such as Sims) on a Sempron or Celeron. That dual-core Athlon for $70 additional would go a long way towards overall owner satisfaction.
craz4u3 Posted January 25, 2008 Posted January 25, 2008 Thanks for your help, Marcster. One more question - which do you think would be better in my case - Windows XP or Vista?

lowe41 Posted January 25, 2008 Posted January 25, 2008 I just bought a Vostro 1400, I got it with XP though. Its a little more, but you get a little more with it as well. (my opinon) It has a 14 in screen as opposed to an 15.4 in screen and a pentium dual core processor. I got the 2 yr warranty and it around 650.
