jkjkmc Posted November 23, 2007 Share Posted November 23, 2007 They started that at my Target last year.....but it worked MUCH better than the old way which was lines for each register that wrapped all throughout the store, through departments and any which way you can imagine. It was a nightmare! I was happy when they started the one line way last year and it was awesome this year. I was in and out of Target in 25 minutes, after 2 transactions no less! But Target did this a few years ago at our local store & it was a nightmare! I swear the manager did not read/follow directions -- the line stretched to the back of the store and when we finally got to the front NOONE was directing customers - the last few lines had TONS of people in line and the first few hand no waiting. And besides it assures that the next person in line will be checked out before everyone else. With the old way if your line gets held up you basically have to wait or go to the end of another line. My friend went up to the front and found that every register had it's own line that was WAY shorter than the one we were in. So we moved up, still took ust 35 minutes to check out though. There was no none directing the lines so people were cutting in front of others and people were getting angry. It was the worst experience every at Target and we go every year. I WISH my Target had done this. It was absolutely insane there today - I agree with whoever said that it was the worst they'd ever seen it in many years. Same situation here - apparently the police were called shortly after we were able to FINALLY check out. We also had chaos even getting into the store. People completely disregarding the line that went around part of the parking lot TWO times, cutting in line as the doors were open, etc. Target needs to assess their crowd management techniques, and educate all their managers appropriately. freesia39 Posted November 24, 2007 Share Posted November 24, 2007 pick up some people movement skills at fry's. they usually have 30 registers open, all in one line. on super crazy days, they'll open the secondary set of registers, and they could have anywhere from 50-70 registers open. they have ONE person standing at the front of the line, telling you which register to go to. further, the register will notify you that they are open by pressing a button to turn on a green light. when i worked at fry's way back when (meaning before the commission cashier days) i would always volunteer to be the "vanna." I was in and out in 26 minutes and that's with fighting the crowds in electronics AND toys. Got everything I was after except the Fur Real newborns which I forgot to look for. Argh! Another husband was standing in front of me when he got a call from his wife who found the Pharmacy line. It was much shorter than the other "snake" line. Luckily he let me in on the secret. There were two registers open in the pharmacy and it went smooth. I was scared when the scanner stopped working for the lady in front of me. The clerk had to type all of the barcodes in. I'm not sure how well it worked, because after seeing that huge line, and over-hearing there were three registers open in electronics, I headed back there to 3 reasonable lines. I have to commend Target for their management of the outside lines pre-opening. They had police and several Target security personel out there. The security guy went all around the line, which ended up going down the side of Target, across a parking lot, and up the side of Dick's, telling people where stuff would be. He said to not run, but walk fast; not to take anything from anyone's cart; and that they'd do their best to keep the people who were sitting in their cars, or just hovering around the front from rushing the doors. They did! It wasn't until every single person who bothered to line up was in the door until they let the other folks in. Everyone was well behaved from what I could tell. Good job, Target! steph1 Posted November 24, 2007 Share Posted November 24, 2007 Mine had something similar. 3 big lines -- down the main aisle towars electronics, down the main aisle through womens clothes andjewlry and one down the center aisle between girls clothes and greeting cards. The one from the electronics dept wasn't moving, so I went to the one beside greeting cards. It moved along quite nice. When I got to the front there was 1 guy directing people (all registers open); but the line from electrinics direction was merging into only 2 registers -- why it was going so slow. The line wrapped the entire way around the store. People at the mall later that day said they spent 2+hrs in line. We seen the line and left. Target was always the fastest line we got through--- so I think, personally, this was waaaaayyyyyy worse. kren Posted November 25, 2007 Share Posted November 25, 2007 Saw firsthand the difference between the two styles of lines -- at my Target, it started out as disorganized lines to all registers, snaking in different directions, with nobody able to move through the front of the store because of carts in every possible aisle and between clothing racks, all in line. That didn't work at all. After about 20 minutes, Target instituted a single-line system. I don't know how they eliminated all the other lines (I was checking out at that point -- maybe they let everyone in another line check out first?) but they compressed everyone into one line and had someone stand there and direct you to the next open register. It seemed to be more smooth after that, AND .. it was incredibly easy to get around the store since all the auxiliary lines vanished. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Ours had three single lines, snaking through the entire store and no one knew where the end of the lines were. The front of the store was easy to maneuver since there weren't the bunched crowds at the registers, but the rest of the store was tricky trying to get in and out of aisles when there was a line formed down every major corridor. Even though they were directing shoppers to the next available cashier we were still in line for a total of 65 minutes.
