He is also one one of my closest friends husband. He used to work for my DH, years ago. So would it be wrong to do a really nice family gift? neice0510 Posted November 7, 2007 Share Posted November 7, 2007 Wow I do it the really cheap way and either get together with other moms to make a gift card to a restaurant or barnes and noble or get a small gift card by myself. I'm not crafty at all and between all three kids school I have 6 teachers to buy for not including specialists such as OT and speech, I really want them to know I appreciate them but it all adds up unfortunately.(note: one son goes to two different classes and in each one he has two teachers) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
guilliam Posted November 7, 2007 Share Posted November 7, 2007 Last year I was able to get ds5's teachers each a Longaberger Mug (I work there) and I put a packet of hot chocolate in each one with some peppermints (the round red and white ones that are out at Christmas time). You could use any mug though. It made a cute gift. Not sure what I will do this year, waiting on our employee sale as Longaberger products are always a hit with the teachers and I can get them reasonably priced. (We don't expect anything, at least I don't) however any gift your child gives is greatly appreciated! we do receive a lot of mugs, candles (even in abundance they are still a nice gift) Here is my advice: gift cards for teacher to purchase items for the classroom (Target, WM or a local Teacher store, Book store) Teacher items - any office supplies, post-it notes, stickers Bath and Body - especially hand lotions or hand sanitizers (female teachers) however they do now have a mens line in the store (not sure what) more personal - gift card at Teacher's favorite store (where they would buy something for his or herself), or something that the teacher collects, favorite sports team Ex: (one year I received a long sleeve shirt with our school logo on it) I hope this helps. The boys can make their own holiday cards for him or just write a nice note letting him know he's a great teacher, that they enjoy his class, etc. Or... maybe they could make a donation to a charity in his honor. dd50 Posted November 7, 2007 Share Posted November 7, 2007 I have a few friends that are teachers and most said they like gift cards because they don't get that much money for supplies and most take out of their pocket. What I try to do is give a ornament and a gift card. This year her teacher loves chocholate kisses so I will get a container and fill it with that along with the gift card. At times when they were in younger grades I would buy stickers, pads and stamps, etc. You can find alot of that stuff in the dollar store and make a nice basket also sold in the dollar store. This year I found some very cute Apple picture frames at our local craft show for only $4 and I will put that with a box of Hersheys Pot of Gold!! Shortness Posted November 7, 2007 Share Posted November 7, 2007 I always do flavored coffees for the coffee drinkers. Sometimes a variety of tea. Sometimes a gift certificate for a favorite espresso stand or Starbucks. Also chocolates for some. Organic soaps (were a huge hit last year)--as people with fragrance and chemical allergies will not likely react to these. I never do perfumes or chemically scented lotions, as so many people are allergic skin or breathing wise. Last year for my son's preschool teachers, another mom (my friend) and I decorated paint cans and filled them with the stuff to make cookies and christmas dish towel and utensils. This year we are making them event calendars that they can use each year to track important birthdays and anniversary's. It is always nice 2 get something different and homemade! Personally, I give my own child's teacher a gift card for a restaurant, Home Interior candles, or Bath and Body hand soaps. My husband is also a teacher. In the past he has gotten... 1. favorite sports team items...magnet, banners, etc. 2. Outback gift certificate 3. Local wing place gift card..... Everything in the room is filled with him and for extra credit, she has the kids bring in the cartoon strips, etc. LOL. Now just to find some Garfield stuff. (she is also in pet rescue as I am so Im also thinking of getting her something with that). Last year I did BBW hand sanitizer and hand lotion that I got on sale black friday. I may do that for some of the teachers this yr. I am a room mom for youngest DS's class and his teacher filled out a " favorite" list that I sent out to all the parents. I will buy something off her list for her like chocolates and coffee:) I wish all the teachers had filled out the list since it makes it so much easier. jbdinos Posted November 7, 2007 Share Posted November 7, 2007 DS11 went to middle school this year... he has EIGHT teachers.... and DS10 has three in 5th grade. DS8 has 2. We only have 3 of them that are men. Personally we get gifts for the teachers that are good and that are trying to be helpful to all. Very rare that we have one that is just not nice, but you know they are out there. It's not based on whether our kids like them or not, but on how they teach or don't teach. We had a teacher one year that did everything on computer and never actually used any live instruction. She had a "program" to teach everything. She didn't even have to grade anything. It was weird and when asked for assistance when our daughter didn't understand she flat told us she didn't have "time" that our DD should have paid more attention when she played the video. She was in 4th grade. That teacher didn't get a gift. We felt she just didn't care as long as she could sit at her desk and read magazines/drink coffee. She also used a lot of mean put downs to the kids as well as some parents. Other teachers complained also. But this year we again have 13 wonderful teachers. Love every one of them. But that is a lot of gifts too... so I went to DG the other day and they had spring votive holders for 90% off. Two holders with cute little spring flowers in pink, burnt orange, and blue. YOu got two holders for 10cents.... then I got the little votive candles to match, only in pumpkin pie, mulled apple cider, etc. Holiday, but not totally Christmas scents.... these were 6 candles for 1.50. Used christmas tissue and ribbon to "wrap" each one. I think I figured like 30-40 cents each but they are really cute and not limited to CHristmas decorating. That covers the women, but I have no clue what I am doing for the 3 men. They teach English, Math, and PE. Math teacher's room is plastered in Colts memorbilia so might be able to do something along that line for him. PE teacher probably enjoys sports as well. English teacher, will like anything... he is a semi-permanent sub for most of this year as the other teacher had to be out from an injury he suffered and needs major surgery/rehab and only was there on the very first day. So since it's his first teaching job for the sub he should be easy... plus our son has him twice a day anyway. I honestly feel like cheap is okay as teachers know it's the thought that counts anyway. I think that ornaments are a good idea and were my original idea until I happened upon the votive deal at DG. Anyone that shops at Collections etc... they have a 6 piece set of candy shelf sitters for just under 5 bucks... I got some a while back for my mantle and had thought about ordering more for the teachers... they light up and are fairly big and 1 or 2 per teacher would be cute too. Especially for those that are doing a gift card and a small thing... maybe one of them and a card together.... that is what I plan on for my mail lady! I got my DD teacher a package of christmas cookie mix with a cookie cutter for 1.60. Something small but with small children, that would be great for her. We totally LOVE both of them and had considered giving the male a GC to a restaurant for both of them and her just the candle and she would know it was more when she got home... these two have taught BOTH of our math hating boys to love it and get A's too!!!!
