The dv2500t is the next model up from the HP 14.1" dv2000t. It comes standard with a Core2Duo and has an optional fingerprint reader and more advanced features than the dv2000t can be configured with. Incidentally, there is a 30% off deal on the dv200t right now too:

http://forums.gottadeal.com/showthread.php?t=81793

When combined with the 20% off discount code, the dv2500t is right in line with what a dv2000t would cost when loaded to the hilt with the 30% off code on that laptop. Personally, I'd lean towards the dv2500t, that's just me.

When outfitted as similarly as possible, the dv2500t is about $13 more, but the processors aren't quite equal:

The dv2000t -- Intel® Core 2 Duo processor T5300 (1.73 GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 533MHz FSB)

And the dv2500t -- Intel® Core 2 Duo processor T5250 (1.5 GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 667MHz FSB)

If you compare the dv200t to the dv2500t with a better processor on the dv2500t, the cost spead is higher, but your getting a 2.0+Ghz processor...

The code you need is NB2770 (it expires 9/12/07 or whenever they feel like pulling it).

The dv2500t comes with a Core2Duo processor, Vista Home Premium, and 1GB of RAM standard. To upgrade to 2 GB is $80 ($100 less 20% discount). Right now you can get a 160GB hard drive as a free upgrade.

That makes it $775.99 for a dv2500t with 2GB of RAM.

Remember, you'll actually enter the discount code on the final checkout page, which is after you've added the laptop to your cart and provided your address... This is the same page where you'll enter your payment information. It's a little further into the process than Dell does it (if you are familiar with their checkout process). Also, the NB2770 code will negate the $100 instant rebate. You can't have it all, I guess...

Thanks for the detailed info. I may get either this one, a DV2000 or a Dell Vostro. Can't decide!!

This review pretty much steered me away from the dv2000t to the dv2500t:

http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3721&review=HP+dv2500t

While I was initially impressed with the Vostro, I've had good experience with HP/Compaq (and I've only owned a Dell monitor so far).

Some things I really like about the current HP/Compaq line over other computers:

1) There is a little button near the trackpad to turn the trackpad on and off. That's great since I use a mouse 99% of the time anyway. Keeps me from having phantom mouse movement while typing.

2) Greater docking station options: the xb3000 Notebook Expansion Base and the HP Notebook QuickDock. Those prices are a little high, you can buy either locally or on eBay for less.

That might sound a little high, but I got their top-of-the-line processor, 2GB of RAM, quite a few upgrades, a ExpressCard Digital/Analog TV tuner, and a 2 year extended warranty. I kept thinking about whether or not to get the dedicated graphics card but finally decided since I'm not a gamer, it wouldn't be necessary.

I did the 6-months same-as-cash option. Should ship on 9/14! http://s23.photobucket.com/albums/b399/Marcster2005/Smileypad/Happy/birthday_kangaroos.gif

I've had good experience with HP/Compaq in the past, going back to a Win98 850mhz AMD Slot A Tower... My wife has a new Compaq laptop. I have a 17" zd8205us laptop as my primary laptop and an old Evo N410c as my secondary laptop (both of which I'll be selling soon).

Congrats! I think I'm ruling out the Dell Vostro 1400, so it's between the dv2500t and dv 2000t. Bigger discount on the dv2000. I'm trying to decide if the improvements on the dv2500 are worth the extra couple hundred dollars. I better decide quickly!

Thanks... I probably went a little overboard on the upgrades, but if you compare the dv200t and dv2500t as closely as possible, the dv2500t is only between $13-$93 more.

Marcster, you jumped in too quick! HP has a new 30% off coupon -- NB3009.

That coupon is valid for all laptops $999 and above (except for that HDX 20.1" monster) till 9/22.

*****

Hmm, maybe they'll price match?

EDIT: I just called HP's Sales -- gotta love a company that has hours till 2AM. They said no problem to price match. Price protection lasts 30 days after receipt of product and he said I should have it by the 14th or the 17th. So that'll be an additional $138 (including tax) that I'll save.

He said I have to actually have the computer to do a price match, it can't still be in production.

The only thing that stinks is that I would've sprung for the graphics card at that point. I was prepared to spend up to $1200 including the warranty and tax.

Thanks, Al!

Marc, great news about the 30 day price protection! $138 back will be real nice! Take that money and use it on a nice dinner for you and your wife.

BTW, let me know how that Fingerprinter Reader works out. I was debating on getting it, but figured it would either not work well, or I would have little use for it anyway.

Marc,

I also used the 20% off coupon for the dv2500t which brought the price down from $1055.98 to $844.78 (pretax). I bought the notebook on HP's official website.

Having got a big discount like that on a decent piece of machinery I was elated!

This was about a week back.

Today I was just trawling through the net and accidentally happened to see the 30% off coupon!

Needless to say I felt GUTTED!!!

Until I read your post in here about some 'price protection'.

Please, please tell me all about this, cos I have NO idea what it is.

This was my first real purchase in the US and don't really know how to avail 'price protection'.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers!

After your computer arrives call HP Sales at 1-800-892-6609 (7am - 2am EST every day) and tell them that a code of NB3009 became available right after you bought your computer and that you'd like a credit for the difference (the 10%).

If they give you a hard time, you can threaten to return the laptop.

First real purchase in the US -- where are you from? Welcome to the USA!

Resident Bollywood expert eh?

he he... I'll keep an eye out.

By the way, Marc, I spoke to HP sales and they gave me an additional 10% discount! :D

And... I didn't have to wait for the notebook to arrive for them to refund the balance.

The guy said, I should have the moola in 5 to 7 days.

Thanks again Marc for the help!

Cheers!

Yeah, mine came Friday too about 9:30 am. Would you believe I've been too busy to open the box? It's sitting right next to me as I type this...
