The dv2500t is the next model up from the HP 14.1" dv2000t. It comes standard with a Core2Duo and has an optional fingerprint reader and more advanced features than the dv2000t can be configured with. Incidentally, there is a 30% off deal on the dv200t right now too:

When combined with the 20% off discount code, the dv2500t is right in line with what a dv2000t would cost when loaded to the hilt with the 30% off code on that laptop. Personally, I'd lean towards the dv2500t, that's just me.

 

When outfitted as similarly as possible, the dv2500t is about $13 more, but the processors aren't quite equal:

The dv2000t -- Intel® Core 2 Duo processor T5300 (1.73 GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 533MHz FSB)

And the dv2500t -- Intel® Core 2 Duo processor T5250 (1.5 GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 667MHz FSB)

 

If you compare the dv200t to the dv2500t with a better processor on the dv2500t, the cost spead is higher, but your getting a 2.0+Ghz processor...

 

The code you need is NB2770 (it expires 9/12/07 or whenever they feel like pulling it).

 

The dv2500t comes with a Core2Duo processor, Vista Home Premium, and 1GB of RAM standard. To upgrade to 2 GB is $80 ($100 less 20% discount). Right now you can get a 160GB hard drive as a free upgrade.

 

That makes it $775.99 for a dv2500t with 2GB of RAM.

 

Remember, you'll actually enter the discount code on the final checkout page, which is after you've added the laptop to your cart and provided your address... This is the same page where you'll enter your payment information. It's a little further into the process than Dell does it (if you are familiar with their checkout process). Also, the NB2770 code will negate the $100 instant rebate. You can't have it all, I guess...

This review pretty much steered me away from the dv2000t to the dv2500t:

While I was initially impressed with the Vostro, I've had good experience with HP/Compaq (and I've only owned a Dell monitor so far).

 

Some things I really like about the current HP/Compaq line over other computers:

 

1) There is a little button near the trackpad to turn the trackpad on and off. That's great since I use a mouse 99% of the time anyway. Keeps me from having phantom mouse movement while typing.

 

2) Greater docking station options: the xb3000 Notebook Expansion Base and the HP Notebook QuickDock. Those prices are a little high, you can buy either locally or on eBay for less.

That might sound a little high, but I got their top-of-the-line processor, 2GB of RAM, quite a few upgrades, a ExpressCard Digital/Analog TV tuner, and a 2 year extended warranty. I kept thinking about whether or not to get the dedicated graphics card but finally decided since I'm not a gamer, it wouldn't be necessary.

EDIT: I just called HP's Sales -- gotta love a company that has hours till 2AM. They said no problem to price match. Price protection lasts 30 days after receipt of product and he said I should have it by the 14th or the 17th. So that'll be an additional $138 (including tax) that I'll save.

 

He said I have to actually have the computer to do a price match, it can't still be in production.

 

The only thing that stinks is that I would've sprung for the graphics card at that point. I was prepared to spend up to $1200 including the warranty and tax.

After your computer arrives call HP Sales at 1-800-892-6609 (7am - 2am EST every day) and tell them that a code of NB3009 became available right after you bought your computer and that you'd like a credit for the difference (the 10%).

 

If they give you a hard time, you can threaten to return the laptop.
