jsmst35
I have been searching for hours now trying to find a great deal on a HP Notebook with no luck. I only want HP, and not one with an AMD processor. Does anyone have any coupon codes and/or a specific deal on one of these? I thought with kids going back to college and school there would be some great deals. I just can't seem to find any, or maybe I am just too late... nirvana4all
All the special deals I have are with the fast AMD processors, due to my connections I do not have anything on Intel's anymore. Will let you know if anything opens up, maybe with sept 10's launch of the barcelona I will get something, but likely it will just be another influx of amd deals as it is amd's barcelona. Sorry. nirvana4all
Ohh, nothing, they actually have the best price/performance ratio right now, and therefore most of the mid segment market is going to AMD, it is only the high margin top end market where Intel is owning the market. That top end they dont want to give up that margin (not to mention Intel has gotten all the margin spent on keeping exclusivity <see intel anticompetition/monopoly law suits>) so they are not giving out much in the way of discounts and such. So stationchief, the fact is that there is nothing wrong causing me to have problems coming up w/ deals on intels, it is just the reasons I listed about AMD is why. jsmst35
I currently have an HP with the AMD processor and it is so slow. Maybe something else is causing it, but it was the first computer I owned with that processor, and it drives me crazy from the first day I got it. So if these are the best out there, what should I be looking for? Do I need more memory, etc.? I honestly do not know much about these. I work full time, and a graduate student. I basically live on Excel, but I already have FREE Microsoft Office Software since I am a student. I just need a good reliable laptop that can have a few processes that can run fast and simultaneously. Any advice and or deals that would be good? nirvana4all
Any current system should do that, but what nags at me is why your current system does not work. Mind if I have the stats of your current system (processor, ram, hard drive, os) and what you have running to keep it clean (diskeeper, sandra, spybot, etc)? If it is not that old, no matter the processor, then there is something going on with the computer. You should not see pitiful performance no matter the processor. Likely amount of RAM and/or something (virus/adware/spyware etc) else. Intel or AMD, recent computer should not be SLOW to the point of annoying you. jsmst35
It's an HP Pavilion with an AMD Sempron with Microsoft Windows XP, but I do not know where to find the other info. I know I have McAfee...
jsmst35
Ah, I found it. Processor 2800+ 1.59GHz 224 MB RAM Windows XP Home Ed 2002 Need anything else?
nirvana4all
you're kidding me 224mb ram????? 1. it would be 256mb 2. You should have 1gb if you want fast performance, not 224mb. Processor is okay, but that "224mb" of ram is KILLING you. 512 really should be minimum for xp, but for a real nice experience I recomend 1gb minimum. if you know as little about the computer as you state, adding that and having someone clean it should make a major difference and should cost you pennies compared to buying something new. ($75 for 1gb ram maybe, and $50 for a system cleanup) It will not be the fastest on the planet as it is a little older, but for maybe $125 it will be a brand new computer to you I almost garuntee! Sorry. If you don't mind me asking, do you work for a computer company? When you said "deals I have" and "my connections", I was just wondering. Glad someone out here knows about computers as I am pretty clueless. Even if I need to fix something on my current computer, I still need a new one. A friend of mine is just starting college and her computer crashed. I'm giving her mine as it is better than nothing and she is in no financial position to get one. Just goes too slow for my liking and tends to freeze if there are 4 or 5 windows open at a time. I would like to stick to HP, just looking for a good deal now that my computer is going away... nirvana4all
No problem. I would recommend that she buy some ram for it (that is why it freezes with many things open and is so slow) I build desktops to order as my hobby. As such, and having friends who were CS majors in college and now work as network admins, NSA security, computer testing, I get a lot of info, contacts and experience. As for your next computer: What are you going to do with it How long do you realistically hope to keep it as your main computer before your next one How much do you want to spend How much are you willing to spend Do you definitely want a laptop, or is a desktop possible (I admit I know more and keep more up to date on desktops)
nirvana4all
Quickest things to check out that you can get without any thought etc are all from Circuit City this week. DV6426US DV2419US and DV9429US which get progressively more expensive. the first covers all the bases. The second adds ram, a faster processor, built in bluetooth and wireless N. Third adds more hard drive, faster processor. There are more small differences, but those are the basics that will likely matter to you. Give them a look. They meet your given needs so far (fast, HP, a good deal), and also most of it is instant savings, not MIR. Given more info and time I am sure myself and others could give you the "perfect computer and deal", but I would start by looking at these three and the price circuit city has this week and seeing how they feel.
