HELP-- I need a laptop with a good video card and don't know where to start.

Recommended Posts

I need a good laptop with a great laptop video card in it to send to my husband in Iraq. I know it won't be cheap, but I would like a good one at the best price I can get. His laptop died and he can't search from the computer at work in Iraq, and I am a little clueless as to where to start.

He has told me a few things that he wants:

* Great video card -- this is his top priority with it

* 2gb of ddr2 sdram

* Hard drive needs to be at least 7200 rpms (80GB is big enough as we are going to get

an external hard drive as well.

* Dual core Intel processor min 2.0GHz

* The bigger the screen the better

Other than those specs he is not that picky. DVD burners, etc don't matter. Just the basics are fine other than what is necessary to make the video card go.

I have seen you guys help out so much with computers. I hope you will be able to help me out. Thanks in advance! :)

Something like this?

http://officedepot.shoplocal.com/officedepot/default.aspx?action=detail&flashbrowse=y&storeid=2279137&rapid=430337&pagenumber=6&listingid=-2092975541&ref=%2fofficedepot%2fdefault.aspx%3faction%3dbrowsepageflash%26storeid%3d2279137%26pagenumber%3d6%26rapid%3d430337%26prvid%3dOfficeDepot-070729

Have any more specifications besides dual core, 2 gb ram, decent video card? It would help narrow the field some.

sorry, just saw the 7200rpm now...that does narrow the field quite a bit on notebooks.

The bigger the better for a laptop screen is not always the best. You drain battery power almost twice as fast, and for this to be something for him while he is deployed it's something major to consider if he will be near a power source most of the time.

I agree...the specs given as wants seem more like a desktop PC than a notebook/laptop.

Well the main thing that he is focused on is the video card.... not just descent, but more of a gaming type video card -- we are more than willing to pay the price for a good video card. As far as the screen size, he saw one that was like 13 inch and would rather have more like a 15 at least. Most of the time he should be able to keep it plugged in anyway. Its just that it is easier to have a laptop than a desktop in Iraq due to space limitations.

I bought my son a Dell 2 years ago and he plays Wow and EQ on it, but he plays EQ2 and a couple of others on the desktop. It was pricey then, but it should be better now. My son is actually currently DROOLING over a couple of the Alienware laptops, but I just got him a car a few months ago and so he's not getting a new laptop till he graduates.

Alienware Notebooks

I just asked him and he says that the Dell XPS M1710 (he's memorized the number LOL) is the Dell that he would consider, but he likes the alienware better.

The Dell XPS M1710 is the one I was checking out earlier. I will check out what they have on alienware. Thanks!

Alienware -- a google will bring up many people who are unhappy with the quality of theirs. http://www.google.com/search?q=alienware+problems Since Dell bought 'em that may have changed.

For the top-shelf performance you are looking for, you might want to go with a Cyperpower laptop http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/r05/ri05.asp, Voodoo PC http://www.voodoopc.com/system/Notebook.aspx, or Dell's XPS M1710 as someone else posted earlier: http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsnb_m1710?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs.

The Voodoo PC laptop would definitely give your husband bragging rights -- it would probably be the only one in Iraq!

I am glad you told me that about Alienware....

I think I will have to skip telling him about the Voodoo or we won't be going on vacation when he gets back from Iraq. lol

Are the Cyberpower Laptops pretty good? So far I am liking those and the Dell XPS M1710 the best. The Cyberpower configured nicely price-wise and feature-wise so it is in the front running right now.

Cyberpower keeps winning awards from Computer Shopper and (I think) Maximum PC magazines. I've never used one, and never known anyone who had one.

The prices are reasonable, but read things like this:
