moniemonie3 Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 My daughter needs the TI-84 Plus or TI-84 Plus Silver for her Honors Algebra 2. STAPLES has the TI-84 Plus on sale next week for $89.99. The TI-84 Plus Silver Edition is $109.98 at Wal-Mart and $128 at STAPLES. I don't know anything about these calculators. Does anyone know if the Silver Edition has anything special that she would need in the future? I don't want to spend the extra $20 just for a changeable faceplate.
wild4mn Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 I have the TI 83 silver edition and if I remember right it is a little faster, maybe 1.5x faster. There may be a little more memory also. I don't think there are any additional features that she would need in the future. I assume this is the same for TI-84, but I am not positive. If you are a little ambitious, you can get the TI-84 silver for about $60 on eBay.
moniemonie3 Posted July 13, 2007 Author Posted July 13, 2007 I made the mistake of not spending the money for it last year. I bought her a cheapie because I didn't want to shell out the money. I just want to make sure I get what she needs so that I don't have to purchase another one next year. Thanks for your help!
biomajor Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 My kids have both (I've bought 3 of the stupid TI's in the last 3 years) and the only difference is that the silver has more memory and is a little faster. My son lost his Silver edition, so I bought him the regular one to replace it, and my daughter still has her Silver edition.
laffnatu Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 I would check on ebay or Craigslist. I have seen several in the past month listed on Craigslist.
Fishboysmom Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 I don't know if this will be of use to you but I saw this Texas Instruments TI-89 Advanced Graphing Calculator on Amazon.com yesterday for $99.99 reg. $190.00. http://www.amazon.com/Texas-Instruments-Advanced-Graphing-Calculator/dp/B00000JF55/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/103-4313292-1839864?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1184349267&sr=8-2
biomajor Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 Don't get the TI-89 for a high schooler--it can't be used on the ACT or SAT and they'll have to use someone else's that they aren't familiar with on the test
tokanm Posted July 14, 2007 Posted July 14, 2007 I got my DS's on ebay last year. It was brand new and it was about $55 total.
moniemonie3 Posted July 17, 2007 Author Posted July 17, 2007 Does anyone know why the silver is more expensive?
wild4mn Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 The silver has slightly more memory and is slightly faster. Buy the cheaper one. Unless she is crunching an insane formulas (beyond calculus) or filling it with games you will never need the additional memory or speed.
