brynnfromtheblock
My family LOVES the movie A Christmas Story.... this year we decided that next year we want to recreate some scenes in the front yard, rather than put out the normal reindeers and trees etc.... I'd like to have an opening the leg lamp scene, the tongue stuck to the pole and Higbees department store window... We're going to start thinking about it through the year and collect materials as we go... The best I could think of is cutting the forms out of plywood and painting them, then putting lights on it so it would show up..... no ideas yet on how to make an outdoor leg lamp that would glow... You guys are creative.. what's the best way to do this?

amyers12345
Did you see the story on the news about the guy that bought the house used in the original movie? He remodeled the house to look exactly like all of the sets on the movie, right down to the furniture. He also manufactures the leg lamps. http://travel.nytimes.com/2006/12/06/us/06cleveland.html http://www.leg-lamp.com/ Maybe this can help for ideas. brynnfromtheblock
I saw that and have the site bookmarked... I so want to go there!! The lamps are expensive, and I actually wouldn't mind paying for it so that it would look right... .but none of them are indoor/outdoor... we really want this to be outside where everyone can see it... (we have small weird shaped design windows in the front so it wouldn't look right to put it inside, plus I want the box with "FRAGI-LE" on it!! the shade won't be a problem, but I guess I need to figure out how to get a leg and put some sort of outdoor bulb in it and not melt the plastic... (that's the part that's going to be hardest I think)
ms_mckenna
I am wondering if they make a plastic manequin leg that would be made out of the thnner plastic? That you could put lights in to make it glow? It sounds like a really cool idea btw :)
brynnfromtheblock
OOhhh one of the sites has just the mannequin legs for sale.. but they're out of stock... but I'm sure they'll be back in before I need it.. not sure about the best way to attach the light shade/light though
ms_mckenna
I was thinking putting chirstmas lights in it might give it a soft glow that would illuminate it? Kinda like Jodi puts in her glass blocks. As far as attatching I think it would be trail and error and a drill unfortunately.
brynnfromtheblock
It would be way cool if I could think of a way to put sound to the different scenes.. "FRAGI-LE" "You'll shoot your eye out" and "Stuck-Stuck-Stuuuuccckkkk"
sm1kla
Spencer gifts also sell the leg lamps- It may be easier make the leg lamp crate. A wood crate will also be more durable than using styrofoam or anything like that.
