cotejb Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 So I buy this cute yard decoration from Michaels for $40 b/c I want something unique that nobody else in my neighborhood has and something that is very cute! http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g281/cotejb/IMG_0059.jpg Well its a piece of junk...I've had it up for a little over a week and its done broken twice. Its made with cheap wood and not put together well so the screws came out from the base and the wood broke....So I tried to fix it last Sunday..I put a few more screws and nails in it and figure it will hold up...I move it from the middle of the yard to in the flowerbed with a bush behind it ot support it so it won't break again....Wrong...It breaks again...It's not that windy here and it should hold up being an outside decoration....I emailed Michaels on Thursday about what a piece of crap it is....I would have taken it back but I don't have the box b/c I threw it away...They said my email was being forwarded to the district manager...blah blah blah....so basically nothing will happen...Okay so I decide to try and fix it once again today....I move the board over so now the base isn't even centered b/c I had to try and find a place to put new screws...I get it where I think it will hold it up and prop it up against the house and have a flower pot kinda in front of it so it won't break and fall a third time...I go to plug it in and now half the lights won't work....I'm so pissed...I'm waiting for it to break again...What a waste of $40....
rosalia1 Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 I would return the darn thing without the box. Michaels won't be reselling it and they will write it off. I definately would take it back asap.
ms_mckenna Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 It is adorable but ugh. Have you tried to take it back to the store? I have never dealt with trying to return stuff to them though.

Take the snowman back explain to them what happened. If they say something about not having the box explain nicely at first that you weren't under the impression that they sold crap and if this had not been crap you would not be bringing it back. . So you didn't have any reason to keep a box! If they say something about the screw holes explain to them you were trying to FIX thier product, if need be cause a scene. Course that is me I don't mind getting loud if they don't want to stand behind thier product. I would be highly dissapointed in them if they did not try and fix the situation. I hope they fix this for you. Let us know if there are any changes. Best of luck :)
Marcster Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 if need be cause a scene. Course that is me I don't mind getting loud if they don't want to stand behind thier product. My wife and I bought our washer and dryer from Circuit City as scratch-and-dents (back when CC sold appliances). Well, the washer released gear oil all over our clothes!!! CC sent a repairman. The repairman was an independent guy who did warranty work for CC on the side. He looked it over and determined that it was a defective washer that had never been serviced before being resold. http://s23.photobucket.com/albums/b399/Marcster2005/Smileypad/Profanity/1.gif My wife and I were livid! http://s23.photobucket.com/albums/b399/Marcster2005/Smileypad/Angry/flaming1.gif My wife and I put the ruined clothes in a plastic bag and went to Circuit City on Saturday night, probably the busiest time for CC. We explained our situation and they'd order the parts to fix the washer (new drive motor as I recall). We told them that wouldn't be good enough -- they sold us an appliance as "NEW" that was actually used, defective and was sold without being repaired. I started to get a little loud... We asked if they'd like to see the oil-stained clothes. The appliance section was filled with couples looking at various appliances. "No," they said "that wouldn't be necessary". They delivered a brand-new (not scratch-and-dent) washer on Monday afternoon. http://s23.photobucket.com/albums/b399/Marcster2005/Smileypad/Happy/Big-Smile.gif After a few more washings, all of the oil came out of the clothes too.

Illinoismom Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 I can relate I bought a wooden really cute arch there 2 years ago, Had it up a day and it broke into three pieces, My husband tried to fix it and after Christmas it went in the trash. Wasted 40.00 bucks on that. Ive never bought Christmas stuff there again

It is always amazing to me how quickly they want to "fix" everything when other customers are listening.
scrabbler Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 Many stores take things back without boxes as long as you have the receipt. Especially if it is defective. Go for it and let us know!
conj Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 They said my email was being forwarded to the district manager...blah blah blah....so basically nothing will happen.......I wrote to the management of the Rainforest Cafe when the 6$ cruddy waterbottles the kids got melted in (not on) the dishwasher. there was nothing on them saying not to dishwash... And they were pretty cool - but had been filled with slushy, so there was sticky syrup everywhere! So I wrote. The district took a week or so to get in touch with me, by mail, and they asked me to call. They wanted more contact info than I had provided to them, they forwarded it to the store manager who called me. They sent out replacement bottles... It took a while, for the letter to pass along the appropriate chains, but there was a response. Do not assume there will be no response.
Melissa Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 If a product is defective, it shouldn't matter if you have the original packaging. They're not going to be reselling it anyway. As long as you have your receipt, I wouldn't hesitate to return it.
justjessie99 Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 I have gotten many yard decorations from Michaels especially in clearance. They are very easy going, take it back and tell them.
ms_mckenna Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 Jessica, did you try and take it back yet? Wondering how things went.
Marcster Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 LOL.... I love it!!!LOL Timing is EVERYTHING! It's one of those things that's funny now, but certainly wasn't funny at the time. http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b399/Marcster2005/Smileypad/Wink/wink11.gif
cotejb Posted December 13, 2006 Author Posted December 13, 2006 I was off work today and I took it back adn got it exchanged....The new one isnt' much better and I'm not sure if it will last but at least it works right now....I have it propped up against my house so maybe it won't put as much strain on the base and break again..... I had my receipt but lost it somewhere in the store but since I was exchanging it they didn't care anyways...They never even took the old one out of the box...It was easier than I expected....
ms_mckenna Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 I am glad you were able to take it back no problems. :)
