i need to move from Portland Oregon down to San Diego California. i don't have a car or a drivers liscense. i'm single and i have a one bedroom apartment but all the furniture will be staying. whats the cheapest way to do this? i'm assumeing that i'll need to get my liacense but i'm 24 so it's about time anyway.

- rent a u-haul 1 way for $1,500 or so plus gas

- buy a cheap pick-up and rent a uhaul trailer for $175 and gas

- moveing company of some sort?

If you can find a cheap pickup go that route so you'll have wheels in SD.

Otherwise rent a U-Haul truck.

Paying a moving company for a 1 bedroom apartment is way overkill.

I moved from Canada to the States and my trick was to use a commercial moving company. Most companies that move equipment for other companies will also help out with personal belonging if you ask them. I had my entire household frieghted for $600. The delivery was about 2 weeks but worth it. Others were quoting $3000 for 2 wks.

- Pack all your belongings in proper moving boxes and get them down to the shipper. They will crate it and frieght it out.

- The items should be there in under 1 week since you are going only across state lines.

- Rental of trucks to get your stuff from apt->shipper->new apt is about $40.

- Take a plane to your new place and then look into getting a car at San Diego.. Otherwise you will have to buy a truck and might not be the vehicle you are into.

Just my .02$

Nope but I do know where you can get a list of businesses :)

Does this link work?

You should see this:

Freight Forwarding (93)

Courier & Delivery Services (179)

Mailing & Shipping Services (69)

Packaging Service (121)

bockchow, I called a few of those services and most of them can move your small 1 bedroom apt for about $900.

Have you clicked that link and called any of those businesses?

ya i looked around a little, it's looking like the cheapest way to get this done is to buy a vehicle (truck, wagon, van) and sell off what doesn't fit. i can sell off the car when i get down if it's not one i want for a daily driver and hopefully lose little if any money. that will be the plan unless i can find a way of doing it for 300-400.
