The two locations in Ann Arbor, MI (One's a TrU, other's a BrU) are within a few miles of me. Each is part of a different shopping plaza, both of which I frequent for other stores located there. On the other hand, I can't tell you the last time I went into those Ann Arbor stores - not having kids, nor having any friends with kids that I'd shop for in stores like that, I really had no need for either place. Will be interesting to see what comes in to fill those spaces once the stores close.

I think 180 is a small number of their stores throughout the US. None of the ones around me are closing nor any of the ones where I used to live. As for deals, good luck I find a lot of times they ship out good stuff and bring in garbage from others stores to offload, that and the prices are off of some silly MSRP not what they sold for prior to the going out of business. :)

Got this in my email this morning:

To Our Valued Customers,

I want to take a moment to thank you for your continued support of Toys"R"Us. As you may be aware, we launched a financial restructuring of our business last fall. As we begin the new year, I want to provide an update on our progress to date, as well as our plans for the future.

Our primary focus is on reimagining our business with you in mind. We want to make it easier for you to shop with us, whether online or in our stores. This past season, we were successful in accomplishing this objective for millions of customers. However, there were also far too many transactions where this wasn't the case – due to our operational missteps. As the leader of this company, I want you to know that we can and will address the gaps in the experience that you may have had when shopping this holiday. My team is already hard at work to make the improvements necessary to ensure that we have the products you want, when, where and how you want them.

In addition to convenience, we also recognize that you want fair and competitive prices and it is our job to deliver on that expectation. We recently relaunched our price match program to give you greater confidence when buying from us, and in 2018 we are taking additional steps to ensure that we provide greater overall value to you and your family. We will do this through compelling promotions and by providing an improved loyalty program and a more personalized way of communicating with you – in email, online and social media.

The reinvention of our brands requires that we make tough decisions about our priorities and focus. To that end and following a top-to-bottom assessment of our business, we have decided to close a number of our U.S. stores. We also intend to convert a number of locations into co-branded Toys"R"Us and Babies"R"Us stores. The actions we are taking are necessary to give us the best chance to emerge from our bankruptcy proceedings as a more viable and competitive company that will provide the level of service and experience you should expect from a market leader.

We estimate store closing sales to begin in early February with the majority of locations closing in mid-April 2018. During this time, we welcome you to take full advantage of the deep discounts and deals available.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

We are open for business and ready to serve you. We will continue to operate stores in all major markets across the U.S. and around the world. And as always, you can also continue to shop online at www.toysrus.com and www.babiesrus.com.

We are honoring customer programs. Our customer, registry, credit, warranty and loyalty programs will continue as normal. We will continue to sell and accept gift cards as always.

While our store roster may be getting smaller, what is not changing is our desire or commitment to serving you. For the past 70 years, we have worked hard to earn your business and look forward to being champions of play and a best friend to parents everywhere for decades to come.

Thank you for your support and for choosing to shop with us.

Sincerely,

Dave Brandon
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

This makes me sad. Both stores anywhere close to me are on the list. One of the 2 is very old and probably needed torn down years ago. It's also next door to a mall that has completely shut its doors.  But the other one is a really nice store, in a generally busy shopping strip.

Our location is not closing thank goodness. I'd have been really upset. We go there at least once a month, more like twice most months. I use the coupons and the diaper deals often. The clearance is some of the best and our store is super nice.

I took an opened toy back, no packaging, no receipt but it was an exclusive. He told me to go get a new one off the shelf and we swapped it. No fuss, all he asked was what was wrong with it. (The motor inside was getting hot when played with and we could smell it, not okay for an 11 month old)

They got three calls while they were checking me out at customer service, asking if they were one of the stores closing. The clerk said they'd had people calling all day.

The BabiesRUs here is closing, but the one remaining TRU is not...havent stopped in BRU in a while and with a new g'baby I probably would have...oh well there are plenty of other stores that cater to infants and toddlers so I should be ok...as far as the closing sales I don't think they will be that great initially and when they are there will probably only be odds and ends left...

The closest store to me is closing, but I haven't been there in 5 years or more maybe.  I might head in there sometime in late March, but don't have a big desire to go.  I would mainly look at baseball cards, but they were usually way overpriced anyways, so 60% off wouldn't be much of a savings over other places, but who knows I could get lucky.

Read an article last night that as of next week it's rumored that TRU is going into full liquidation.

Sad sad. I guess they got really hosed over on their last takeover they got stuck with $400M a year in just interest payments. Makes it hard to dig your way out when you have to pay $400M just towards interest.

To me the smart play would be if another Toy store wants to move into the US is buy all the TRU portions they want including real estate. Would have an established chain all over for a fraction of what it would cost to build that footprint.

So Sad but I am not surprised to hear the news this morning. My youngest is upset as Toys R Us is favorite store as I am sure it is for a lot of kids and adults. Their sales during the holidays were really good but it was the sales during the rest the year that were a bust. Plus their every day prices were higher and with some products they were a lot higher then other stores.

Oh ever since they played the commercial jingle on the news report this morning its been stuck in my head LOL

What’s really sad is they were the last toy store near us. The local mom and pop one closed last year. And now this. Sad because some things you want to see in person before you buy.

Very sad day. We will have no dedicated toy stores left. Amazon is a great thing but it's killing traditional shopping and that's not always a good thing. We actually spent a good amount at TRU this past BF. Lot's of good deals for the kids in our families.

Yea, they always had some hard to find items and kept a surprise round of the must have toy of the season. Had to stand in line all night but at least I had a shot to get the toy. Now I am not sure what to do..... Will be missed but hoping that it will be rebranded and rebirthed into something

Anybody going to the liquidation sales yet? We were supposed to go look today but we slept in instead Going on Monday/Tuesday. Going to wipe out their supply of my son's favorite snacks, only store locally that carried them. Other then that I'll wait til the discounts are a bit better... though the urge to buy a ton of diapers is very strong.

He doesn't really need much else right now. And no clue what size he'll be in by next year or I'd buy ahead on clothes. Will probably get a few toys at some point during the liquidation.

Anyway, what are you going to look for if you go? The whole thing makes me sad. Then the TRU founder dying when the liquidation was supposed to start. Made me feel so sad for him, he spent his life building his company and then it collapsed, and he had to watch it all happen.

I went over the weekend, just to check it out. The signs say up to 30% off but i didn't see anything marked that high.

20% off Easter items.

10% off MOST items (so here, you only save pretty much the sales tax.)

5% off Legos

No discount over at Babies R Us, the few aisles I glanced at - which were diapers, baby food, etc.

Yet the line stretched to the back of the store. The deals weren't that great.

Hmmm... 3yo grandson is visiting this week, and I had considered taking him tomorrow to pick something out. I am okay with not very good discounts.... But not with a long line! Maybe the novelty will wear off after a few weeks and it will be better the next time he visits.

My son went to one of the stores on the original 180 store list 3 weeks ago, and he said they were 50% off and no lines.
