Moved to Deal Finder Service forum and edited thread title from cd writer to more accurate DVD burner.

sanam,

1) What is your budget? Do you have a CostCo, Sam's Club, Fry's Electronics or MicroCenter near you?

2) Does your computer have USB and/or FireWire?

Posted

3) Would you mind putting an internal DVD writer into an external case (this is usually a cheaper way to go).

It's not high tech at all, and most external cases come with instructions.

That's a great deal. Remember back in the day when external DVD Burners started at $299?

I remember when I paid $200 for a 4x CD burner and it was a good deal.

You can place the order online and choose in-store pickup. They should have it ready for you at the customer service desk by the time you get there. :g_thumbri

I'd go for this:

KINGWIN SS-525U-S Aluminum 5.25" USB2.0 (type B)External Enclosure

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817146313

$25.99 + $4.99 Three Day Shipping

and this:

NEC 16X DVD±R DVD Burner Silver IDE Model ND-3550A

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827152060

$36.99 + Free Shipping (Sale will end TODAY!)

Note: this is an OEM drive (original equipment manufacturer -- i.e.: no burning software included)

or this (if you need DVD-burning software):

GIGABYTE 16X DVD±R DVD Burner

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827200004

$38.99 + $4.89 Three Day Shipping

****

Total cost: $67.97 for the NEC drive, or $74.86 for the Gigabyte drive (if you need DVD-burning software). And none of those pesky rebates to wait for. :groovin:

You can put the internal drive in an external case in about 5-10 minutes. It'll make you feel like a computer geek. :smart:

The drives above a 16x, which is the fastest speed currently available...

I remember Maxtor 13GB for $129 out the door and that was a hot deal! Retail was closer to $169.

I bought my first B&W laser printer for my Macintosh Performa 636CD when I was in college. It was $850.00. and that was at the student discount! Nowadays, you can get a b&w laser for $49.99 AR. :lolrun:

Performa 636CD:

CPU: 68LC040 66 MHZ

Memory: 8MB

Expandable: 36MB

Drives: 250MB HD, 1.44MB floppy, 2x Speed CD drive

Now you're just showing off. :D

I never cared about computers/technology until I decided to change my major mid-way through college. It would have been cheaper to stay on track to being a teacher.

any good deals this week on a good external dvd burner? I am giving it as a gift, so buying an internal burner and an external enclosure is not an option. Thanks
