I think they are trying to make it look like one of the more expensive chairs like the Aerons. But I think it is better than the standard $30 "pleather" chairs you mention. Alumnum base and a steel frame which are nice to have. Also has adjustable height on the armrests. As long as you're not too tough on it, it should last a good while.
