If you can remember, what made you stop believing in Santa & how old were you?

This is kind of for the younger people here and/or those with really good memories. I remember that I was I think 7 or 8 when my mom essentially told me that Santa wasn't real. I had made a comment one day about something like the magic of Christmas wasn't quite the same that year. I was referring to the fact that one of our favorite Christmas VHS tapes (Toyland) had gotten ruined. My mom mistook it to mean that I knew Santa wasn't real, so she had a talk with me saying not to spoil the fact that Santa didn't exist to my younger sister and twin brother. The irony is I still believed in Santa myself, so she kind of crushed me by saying that. But I guess it would have been only a couple years before I found out some other way, anyway...

I peaked down the stairs when I heard "Santa" come in my house... there it was my mom filling my stocking. I think I was like 9 or 10. I let her think I believed in him alot longer though becausr I thought I wouldnt get presents anymore if she thought I didnt believe. I was crushed

Well, in 1st grade, a little girl told me, so I went to ask my mom and she said that wasn't true....so I told my sister and she told me that there was no Santa. However, I don't think I ever stopped believing. I'm one that still wakes up on Christmas Day hoping to find something magical to have happened....and normally, there's something that has happened.

I found my presents when I was still really small (6-ish). I apparently asked about it, but, I was told they weren't "mine" they were someone else's, and I guess I didn't ask anything else about it. Again, the next year, found my presents..LoL..after that, my brother and I both put it together, and the parents fessed up.

We also figured out if we played along though, we got more goodies. So, even though we "knew", we played along, (parents did too. We humored each other.) for a few more years.

I guess the magic's not gone unless you want it to be.

I was in the 4th grade and Sister Annalita told the class :( On the plus side, until 2 years ago (almost 12) my daughter still believed until we had to go to Arkansas for Christmas and since I drive an SUV it was extremely difficult to hide their santa presents and she saw them while helping unpack.

I cannot remember how old I was. But I figured it out by my Mothers handwriting, she wasnt very discreet about it :( I kept the secret to myself untill one year I asked begged for a CD boombox when they first came out, well I got one and later in the day I peaked in the room where she was and whispered "thank you Mom" she just kinda gave me this OK you know look and said your welcome.

Actually, mine started with the Easter Bunny. I was watching Peter Cottontail on tv and was thinking to myself there is no way a giant bunny hops around and hides eggs and baskets. It was like a lightbulb went off in my head that it's just inconceivable that could happpen- then in the same thought I figured there is no tooth fairy, then it eventually lead to Santa  I was upset about that as he is human after all. Gone was the magic- thanks to the stupid easter bunny :bunny:

My father had dressed up like Santa at a family xmas party, and I said to my aunt, I know that's my dad~! And she said Well good for you, don't you dare tell the other kids that Santa doesn't exisit.:(

I was 7 and that hag ruined Christmas for me! I never said I didn't think Santa was real, I simply said I knew that the guy in my living room wasn't Santa!

This is not about me but my 5 year old. A couple weeks ago my 11 year old DD and my 5 year old DD was sitting at the kitchen table and I heard my 11 year old whispering to my 5 year old that Santa was not real. So she hollered at me in the other room and asked me if Santa was real and of course I told her yes. The I hear the oldest whispering to her the "mommy is lying to you"! I couldn't believe it, what would possess her to tell her that. Needless to say my 5 year old still believes and if my oldest wants her PSP for Christmas I don't think I will hear about it again.

My youngest still sort of believes....I think.

I managed to keep my three believing for longer because of a statement I often told them, "Do you think I could afford all of these presents?". They know how limited our budget is and, therefore, knew that there had to be somebody that brought those gifts. Also I have a friend write out the gift tags and use wrapping paper that is hidden as well...."Santa paper".

For me, I think it was sort of a gradual thing...combination of finding toys in Mom's closet and then finding them under the tree and the fact that the tags were always in her handwriting. Don't remember any tragic, sudden unbelief.

Come on, Daddy was just one of Santa's many helpers. Santa makes so many celebrity appearances that he needs help!

And I can assure you that the 11 year old would get COAL in their stocking and NOTHING else for Christmas and probably grounded if they were mine!:gd_army:

I remember it exactly...I was eight....& it was a Barbie Christmas......I opened up a million of those Barbie outfits...& noticed they ALL had Kmart price tags on them..& said Santa doesn't shop at Kmart!!

My mother always explained that as the elves sometimes have to shop for the "special" presents because they don't get copywritten patterns...made sense.

i was 10 , My dad worked 24 hour on/off 48 hour shifts and my mom always wanted to me to sleep in the bed with her.. pound puppies where hot at that time and I had one in the bed and it dissappeard and I looked under the bed and hit the jackpot. I remember after school coming home (latch key kid) and carefully pulling everything out from under the bed. A huge bubblegum machine, more pound puppies , some clothes, boots, i also got a cedar chest that year my dad brought it in on his way home from work. I also remember if dad worked christmas eve having to stay in the bed till he got home at 730am, boy I thought I was going to just DIE waiting on him to get home. Its easier to hid if your an only child i do believe.

My father was a social worker for the State of New Hampshire when I was little, and when I was about seven he took me to a party his office was throwing for underprivileged and/or abused and neglected kids. I saw their faces and realized that the gifts they got at that party were probably the only ones they would get at all for Christmas. When I said to my father that I knew the truth--that there was no Santa Claus--he smiled sadly and said that Santa is in each one of us: otherwise there wouldn't have been a party for those children in the first place. The guy in the red suit is just there to remind us to look inside ourselves for the spirit of giving.

I was 3 or 4 and I kept asking my mom how Santa gets to all the children at midnight. She kept insisting he did and I kept asking her "how". Finally in frustration she blurted out, "time zones, santa does it by time zones." I paused and said, "nope, that wouldn't help either."

I was more interested in Rudolph, anyway.

I don't think that my parents ever really encouraged me to believe or not to believe in Santa, they still give me presents that say from Santa and I'm 26. I do remember as a child that Santa would come to my house and tell me it was time to go to bed. (To this day, I still have no clue who it was.) One of the times that Santa came, I noticed that he was driving a red sports car and I asked him where his sleigh was, but I don't remember anything else about it.

I don't remember for sure how old I was. But,(this is about my kids) One evening we went to the Cracker Barrel to eat and of course kids will have to touch everything in that store. Well I spot this man in the back standing near the restrooms and say look there's Santa I told you he was always watching you (mind you that this is July or August and the guy just had a Sunday suit on with his white beard) Well to my surprize the gent seen what was going on came up and talked to the kids about christmasand being good and his wife came up and started chatting and he reached inside his jacket (I'm thinking candy at this point) and pulled out two pictures of he and his wife dressed as Mr. and Mrs. Claus! He never said anything about being santa to the kids they just thought who's this old guy. But after he walked off you should have seen them, Perfect angels the rest of the night with thier pics in thier hands the whole time they ate. they are now 9 and 11 (were about 6 and 4) and both well should I say all 4 (have 2 more now 2yo and 5mo) still believe.

Just goes to show he is real, and to never stop believing!

Someone told my son in 1st grade, so we told him the truth. He is 11 now and no matter what we say he still BELIEVES and I mean Really Believes. He knows we do his presents but he is convinced that Santa is really out there. It is wonderful and fun and oh so sweet.

p.s. I believe too and I buy the presents.
