Amazon has the very popular Roady2 XM Satellite Radio Receiver with Built-in Wireless FM Modulator for a very low $104.99 with free shipping. You will also receive a free home kit via mail-in rebate. <br /><br />Delphi's compact SA10085 Roady2 XM Satellite Radio is, on average, 4 times smaller than competing plug-and-play models. While 30-percent thinner and 40-percent lighter than the original Roady, Roady2 features the smallest satellite-radio antenna available, together with a built-in wireless FM transmitter for easy setup and reception in any vehicle. Just tune your car's radio to any of the unit's 12 FM frequencies and sit back to enjoy XM Radio's 68 commercial-free music channels; 34 channels of sports, talk, comedy, children's, and entertainment programming; and more than 20 channels of advanced traffic and weather information for major U.S. metropolitan areas.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0002INUIY/ref=nosim/101081219797-20" target="_blank">Delphi Roady2 XM Satellite Radio Receiver - $104.99 Shipped w/ Free Home Kit - Amazon.com</a><br /><br /><b>Discuss the deal in this thread.</b>
Big Smooth
Seems like a really tempting way to get into XM. So you really wouldn't need to buy anything else to use this in your car and at home, right?
Brad
Correct. You get the vehicle kit included, which lets you use it either with the cassette adapter, or the built in wireless FM modulator. Both will probably give equal sound performance, so for most, the FM modulator is easier. Just plug the power cable into your cigarette lighter socket, plug in the antenna and you're good to go. You can also plug the audio output directly into your head unit if you have an aux. input. The home kit is very similar - has an antenna and a dock with a line out to connect it to a receiver, powered speakers, PC, headphones, etc... This is a really good price. Don't know if it is the new price (doubtful since this model just came out a few months ago) or Amazon just has a lower price than everywhere else. Big Smooth
Just curious, Brad, but if you could ONLY have either XM radio or a portable mp3 player, which would you choose? I've been thinking about buying an iPod or something similar, but I used a friend's car with XM for a week and I really liked it. They have different uses, obviously, but which is more indispensable in your opinion?
Brad
Without a doubt I would choose XM. Unless you do stuff where you would use the MP3 player a lot (working out, etc...). Having XM, especially in a situation like this where you can have it both in your vehicle and at home is very nice. Ever since they went commercial free on all the music channels it has made it even better. Highly recommended, especially at this price.
Big Smooth
Cool, good to know. I'm seriously considering this.
Big Smooth
Hmmm, only problem I see is that for the free home kit, you must purchase by 9/12 and then send in the rebate form by 10/12.Amazon says "1-2 weeks" to ship, but who knows how accurate that is. God knows Amazon has been way off on their shipping estimates before. Tack on another week for super saver shipping, and it's possible you would be past the rebate postmark date. Not likely, but possible...
Brad
I don't think it would take them that long to ship it. You can always order it, and if it hasn't shipped by a certain date, just cancel the order.
Big Smooth
I finally gave in & ordered this on the 10th, no thanks to you, Brad. It hasn't shipped yet, but the delivery estimate is 9/23 - 10/4. So I should receive it in time to send in for the Home kit. Only problem is that I am leaving the country for two weeks for my honeymoon on 10/3, but hopefully it will get here before that. Really looking forward to getting it, virtually everything I read about it (and XM's service) is positive.
Brad
XM announces internet streaming: http://www.xmradio.com/listen/index.jsp $7.99/month to non-subscribers, $3.99/month for subscribers. Sirius offers internet streaming for free to their subscribers (but they charge $3/month more than XM) Still a good way for someone considering XM to try out the programming without buying any hardware upfront. Just pay the $7.99 for a month and see if it's something you'd like.
Big Smooth
My order still hasn't shipped. The Roady2 is OOS at many retailers (and Amazon is not even taking orders anymore), so they must be in short supply. I've still got 3 weeks to receive it and send off for the Home kit so hopefully they can get it to me by then. Otherwise I'll have to break out the
Brad
There are rumors of Roady2 shortages: http://www.xmfan.com/viewtopic.php?t=28973
Big Smooth
I think there must be somewhat of a shortage. Some retailers show it as in-stock on their websites (and Best Buy says it's in-stock at my local store as well) but several other major sites say OOS, and I've read on numerous forums that some people can't find them at local B&Ms. I'm sure Amazon ran out because their price was so low & they're probably scrambling to get more, but you can bet Delphi & XM are pushing to get these produced ASAP. Building their subscriber base is the key to their business, and they certainly don't want people putting off subscribing (or even worse, looking to Sirius) because they can't make the hardware available. Brad
Yep. I'd still wait for the SKYFi2, but if they are having problems making these, who knows when the SKYFi2 will eventually come out.
Big Smooth
Argh! Amazon cancelled my order, saying it's "no longer available from the manufacturer", giving me a link to the SkyFi as an "alternative". So much for "ships in 1-2 weeks", which was the inventory status even for about a week after I placed my order. I really wanted this, and now if I go down to Best Buy and buy one (paying an extra $25 to boot), I won't get the free Home kit because you had to purchase by 9/12!! Although I do still have a printout of my original Amazon invoice dated Sept. 10… Guess that might be kind of shady to try for it that way, though. Brad
It's worth a shot... :) You can also make your own home kit by buying an antenna and a few cables from radio shack. Or go with the skyfi now and then ebay it and get the skyfi2 when it comes out...
Big Smooth
Well, I sent a scathing e-mail to Amazon CS and they gave me a $20 promo G.C. so that curbs my anger somewhat. I'm still not terribly happy with their inventory tracking system, though.
Brad
I'm sure Amazon expected to receive a new supply of units, but like that thread on XMFan said, they were probably notified that there was a shortage and they weren't going to be getting any anytime soon. Good that you got a $20 GC though.
Big Smooth
I agree, the source of the problem is the supplier, but I do think the retailer has a responsibility to keep the customer notified of possible issues. For a week after I ordered, they still said it would "ship in 1-2 weeks" and it remained one of the top-selling items on the site, so I am guessing they took hundreds if not thousands of orders for something for which they obviously had no idea when they'd really be able to ship. Plus, my order status & expected shipping date never changed one bit until the item suddenly disappeared. I know that there is nothing Amazon can do now as far as getting me a unit, but I do think they could have done better at keeping the customer informed, especially considering that there was an MIR that was nearing the cutoff date. Ah well, I'll take my 20 :2dollar:s and be done with it.
Brad
You're right. Although they might not have been notified of the shortage until just this week, which is why they cancelled the orders and did not communicate anything prior to it. I know they did take a lot of orders. We sold a few through this site and a lot of the other deal sites had it. Honestly I'm surprised they actually cancelled the orders. Usually they'd just e-mail you saying "we won't get them in the next 2 weeks, we might get them by december, if you want to cancel, cancel, otherwise just wait" so the fact that they were proactive and cancelled them tells me they don't anticipate getting any in the next few months... This could be really bad for XM if this shortage continues. Christmas day is always the day with the highest # of activations, so if people can't get them for gifts, it could really hurt them... hopefully they don't have shortage problems with the SKYFi2.
