Another thing that will be affecting sales is the gov't shutdown depending on how long it continues and if and when a lot of those workers get paid. You may start to see the sales start early in some Jewish areas as the Hanukkah does start at sundown. Most non Jewish people don't realize that Hanukkah is not a major Jewish holiday. As a Jewish owned and operated business, they observe strict hours and normally close by 1:00 or 2:00 PM or all day before Jewish holidays. I checked their website for their 2013 Holiday schedule. They will be open on Thanksgiving from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM (which means they are not closing early for Hanukkah) and they will be open regular hours on Black Friday from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM (to close for the weekly Sabbath). They are always closed Saturday. Hanukkah isn't even mentioned among the seven Jewish holidays that they observe. (Also closed on Christmas.) So Hanukkah is not affecting their schedule at all. A few days ago, I reconnected with my childhood friend who was my next door neighbor and is Jewish. One thing that always stood out was his bragging over how he got a present every night during Hanukkah. I would always counter with, "My mother always gives us ten presents. you only get eight!" Through our recent conversation, he discovered that 4 of my siblings are Jewish, although my mother usually discouraged gift giving during this time due to Christmas being celebrated by all 8 children. Except for in some high Jewish population areas - there will be channukia and candles, oil, and potatoes. The rest of the US will see no difference in retail.
