Lightning deals: question about changing "original" prices

Good morning all, I am looking at the amazon lightning deals and saw the Panasonic camera that just went live. Before it went live it had a price there of $300 something with a line through it, then when the deal went live that marked out price went up about $100 and the lightening deal price is close to the marked out price before it went live. I have noticed that with several lightening deals they've had over the last couple of days. Am I missing something here? Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

It's just Amazons way. Prior to going live it shows the current sale price then once it goes live they bump it up to products MSRP.

It's their way of making a good deal seem better. Just know what you're willing to pay for whatever you're buying. They have many deals BUT a lot of duds too...I remember last year they had stuff that was like pennies off from MSRP even, it was a good giggle for me as I was sleep deprived ( OTHER people bought some-we're talking 30 odd percent sold at not even 5% sale).

ahhh ok, that explains it! I was looking at it like it was going to be a better deal than the price with the line through it, then got confused because the price jumped and it didn't look like that good of a deal anymore... lol

I went through that last year with some fancy headphones. Yup, they bump up the "regular" price.

You sure? Because when I look at the price details it shows 3 prices: List Price, Price & Deal Price.

For example the Otterbox on Lightning right now:

List Price: $49.95-$49.99

Price: $19.99-$21.98

Deal Price: $16.99

I read that as MSRP is 49.95 to 49.99, Amazon's regular price is 19.99 - 21.98, and the lightning price is $16.99

I added one to my cart (WON'T use an iPhone so I don't want it but wanted to check out what it would do),

and the price for the color I picked is $21.98 and it gave me a $4.99 discount making it $16.99...

If they bump it back to MSRP, I would have expected $49.99 - 33.00 discount.

What they bump to MSRP is the amount showing under items picture on lightning deals page. Before sale starts its shows the price at that time, once the lightning deal goes live that price (under lightning deal picture) changes to the MSRP. For example a lot of the jewelry this morning has been 29.99, once lightning deal goes active the lightning deal price has gone to 19.99 and picture price reflects 49.99.

Some folks see price before lightning deal goes live and believe the discount will be off of that amount expecting a large discount on the previously listed price and aren't seeing that. I've seen a few cases this morning where the discount was a few bucks less than amount originally listed under picture, hardly a "LIGHTNING' deal by my or many GDer's standards I believe.

Amen to that! Saw this last year on a couple of items I wanted. Lost a lot of respect for Amazon on that..

Ah, I see now. I don't pay too much attention to that part anyway and hover over the little down arrow icon to the right of the price and see what the discount (over Amazon's regular price - which is rarely MSRP) is for myself.

I don't think Amazon is alone in this though. I've seen BB, WM and others do similar things when they put stuff on sale. The % or $ amount off in advertising is often off the MSRP. For example, Office Depot is advertising a Nikon camera at $89.99 as being $30 off. That's off MSRP ... Amazon's regular price is actually a 99 cents cheaper than Office Depot's sale price. Out of 16 sellers for this camera tracked at nextag, only 2 (Sears and Bestbuy) are at $119.99 - all of the others are at or better than the "sale" price. The price history hasn't shown the average price for this to be above $100 since June. I watch the laptop sales as I'm always in the market. I know for a fact others advertised huge discounts when the sale price wasn't much better than their normal price.

As with anything, knowledge is power. In this case, it's knowledge of the product and its pricing.

I don't mind them putting up the msrp instead of the price they sell it for, but can't stand when they make up a price. I was looking at a flashlight today, msrp was 121 and their price was 29. Lightning deal was 11 and they said it was 90% off. I went to gerber and looked at it on there. Gerber lists it for 69.99 so they almost doubled the msrp. Very misleading. I was told if a 3rd party merchant sells it for that, amazon uses their price.

I was shocked to see the msrp for $121. I bought the flashlight, lol. I hope I got a good deal and it doesn't turn out to be a dud.

  • 3 weeks later...
Yes, the headset was a steal and I set my alarm to wake up and get it. ( I live in Germany) I got it! confirmed it for the deal price and entered a new credit card number. I entered a number wrong and after a week of trying to charge my card, they cancelled my order.Since my email for amazon is old I did not receive the notification. They say now when they look at my account I was not getting it for the deal price anyway. I am positive it was for the deal price. I watched as the clock ticked down and was excited to have gotten the deal. I know as I confirmed it was for the deal price. They will not honor the deal price for me at all. I am very dissapointed that they will not honor it. They are a large company and can handle it. They had to make money or they would not have sold for that price. Now I have to find something else, and I was so excited about that purchase, that I don't even want to shop for anything now.
