Silly but.....explain crock pots to me?

I asked my mother what she wanted for her birthday (in a few weeks) and she said "a crock pot big enough for a chicken". I've never used one or know anything about them. Obviously when I go to the store I can see how big they are but are there certain things I need to be looking for? I mean, clearly I understand what they do, but how do I go about choosing one?

We have a 5 quart ourselves... It came with a small 1 quart baby crock which can keep Chile con queso warm for parties. They're very handy, pretty easy to clean & last a long time...

I would recommend one that has a timer you can program so it will turn on at a set time at whatever temperature you want, and then turn off (or to warm) at a set time.

Don't get one with a plastic cheapy lid. THey don't hold the heat in as well. Get one with a glass lid. Mine is a large 5 quart one that I got for a wedding present 26 years ago. I couldn't put a chicken in it unless it was cut up, but my son got a 7 quart one with a timer and uses it all the time.
