fluffkin79 Posted November 15, 2010 Share Posted November 15, 2010 I plan on giving my 85-year-old grandmother-in-law a DVD player for Christmas. I'd like to give her some movies to go along with it, but don't know what to look for. Cheaper is better - I'd rather give a few from the under $5 bin than just one newer release. I'll include a kid's movie or 2 for her to share with the grandkids, but I need some ideas of movies she might enjoy. She's no stick-in-the-mud, but not exactly trendy either. I don't think she would appreciate anything with excessive intimacy, drug or alcohol use or other vises. She does like reading mystery stories and loves watching Judge Judy. She did tell me about a movie she enjoyed, but doesn't remember the title. It is about a child and mother who move in with grandma. The mother has diabetes and (I think) gets ill/possibly passes away. I did a search and the only thing I could find was Steel Magnolias, but I think this movie is a bit more recent. This reminds me of a funny story, My mom, who was cool yet conservative, and went video cassette shopping, she bought children of the corn, thinking it was a Waltons, type of movie. I was definatly leaning toward Hallmark or (some) Lifetime movies. You really got my mind going in the right direction. I bet there will be some good ones for her in bins at Walmart and Target. My seniors went bonkers over that when it came out and it's been out long enough that it should be in the $5 bin. Amazon had several 4 pack movies from Turner classic movies for $11.99. I bought 7 different 4 packs for my folks (80 yr old.) She had TV shows that she loved to watch - and it gave me great ideas! You'd be surprised what you can find that some people keep and won't erase! She also liked Nights in Rodanthe (all those Nicholas Sparks movies are good choices) Message in a Bottle was another one and it came out several years ago. Maid in Manhattan was cute as well as The Wedding Planner - both Jennifer Lopez movies so they are more current as well but you should find them fairly inexpensively. They have great collections of older movies for $3.50- I got my Gram a set of 20 westerns (she loves westerns) and my mom a set of 15 Alfred Hitchcock movies. And she is NOT waiting for Christmas to watch them. (She also has 4 new sweaters and two shirts she is looking forward to wearing over the holidays.) I need to start a new thread....Anyone got any ideas on how to keep the old people out of the Christmas presents?!?!? Remember, they are old and they break easy so the methods need to be gentle. Oh! And psychological warfare does not work...Mom's excuse is that she is 80 now, she could go at any time... might not be here for Christmas so she wants to enjoy everything now. I wish my parents would be as excited about Christmas. I guess that could get expensive though. You need a really good hiding place. One year I marked my kids packages by color not by name so they did not who each present was for. I had one who could shake his present s(no matter how I disguised it) and could guess what it was. It was so funny when she found out that it was going to be coming on. My mom would always tease her about Patrick Swayze but granny would deny it every time. We know she secretly had a crush on him. She passed away in 2002 and when I read this thread title, it brought back memories and made me laugh just thinking about it. Not so sure your granny would like Dirty Dancing though,lol.
