Is this Humax TiVo and better / worse than the TiVo brand box? It seems to be fairly comparable. I don't know anything about DVRs, so I guess I'm going to need good recommendations.

I got the tivo one in June from buy.com, I think it was around $180ish then. Prices are certainly on their way down for tivo's since there is more competition for them now from the cable/satelite vendors. As for the Humx one vs the tivo one, I can't really tell the difference judging by the descriptions. humax one certainly is a whole lot cheaper.

From the reviews I have found, it appears that the Humax may just be a TiVo brand box in a Humax shell.

Can anyone tell if I can just go with the free TiVo basic on this box? Like I said, I'm a newb to this, so lots of dumb questions are coming your way. :P

Thanks, RossMAN. I'll look at the Toshiba. I don't want to pay for another subscription, so I definitely want to have TiVo basic. It's mostly for recording football games and Gilmore Girls (for my wife).

The only annoyance with Tivo Basic is 3 day tv guide and no season pass. But you're also saving $12.95 which I think is worth the "hassle".

Additional Tivo Plus units are $6.95/mo not $12.95 :)
