mrn8 Posted August 11, 2005 Posted August 11, 2005 Tivo 2 80 hour Is this a good deal on a DVR? I was thinking of picking up that Sony 5-device learning remote, and saw the Tivo advertise with it. Seems like a good price to me, but what do I know.
RossMAN Posted August 11, 2005 Posted August 11, 2005 Yes that's a good deal considering it's 80 hours and free shipping :)
mrn8 Posted August 11, 2005 Author Posted August 11, 2005 Is this Humax TiVo and better / worse than the TiVo brand box? It seems to be fairly comparable. I don't know anything about DVRs, so I guess I'm going to need good recommendations.
Guest Frieked Posted August 11, 2005 Posted August 11, 2005 I got the tivo one in June from buy.com, I think it was around $180ish then. Prices are certainly on their way down for tivo's since there is more competition for them now from the cable/satelite vendors. As for the Humx one vs the tivo one, I can't really tell the difference judging by the descriptions. humax one certainly is a whole lot cheaper.
mrn8 Posted August 11, 2005 Author Posted August 11, 2005 From the reviews I have found, it appears that the Humax may just be a TiVo brand box in a Humax shell. Can anyone tell if I can just go with the free TiVo basic on this box? Like I said, I'm a newb to this, so lots of dumb questions are coming your way.
RossMAN Posted August 11, 2005 Posted August 11, 2005 mrn8, AFAIK neither of those units offers Free Basic Tivo, only the $12.95/mo or $299 lifetime options. There is no option to "downgrade" from Tivo Plus to Free Basic Tivo. If Free Basic Tivo is important to you then I would recommend the Toshiba SD-H400 for $158.99. I would also read this TivoCommunity.com thread.
mrn8 Posted August 11, 2005 Author Posted August 11, 2005 Thanks, RossMAN. I'll look at the Toshiba. I don't want to pay for another subscription, so I definitely want to have TiVo basic. It's mostly for recording football games and Gilmore Girls (for my wife).
RossMAN Posted August 11, 2005 Posted August 11, 2005 The only annoyance with Tivo Basic is 3 day tv guide and no season pass. But you're also saving $12.95 which I think is worth the "hassle". Additional Tivo Plus units are $6.95/mo not $12.95 :)
