It basically picks up OTA (over the air) HDTV signals, check your signal strength on AntennaWeb.org

You need an antenna (like this one) and either an HDTV with built-in HD (ATSC) tuner or a set-top HDTV tuner (around $200).

I wish the set-top tuners would drop even further in price. Then I would really think about getting satellite TV instead of cable. Right now it's still way more cost effective to get local channels in HD through the cable company if your TV is only HD-ready.
