  1. If you love him, get your husband the HP 17-by1062st 17.3" Laptop $399.99 in the Staples ad -- Intel Core i5-8265U Quad-Core, 8GB, 1t disk, AC wireless, 8-9 hours on a charge.
  2. I love that 17.3. You can swap out a disk or add memory, but the screen you buy is the screen you live with.
  3. Two reasons. One is that the screen is not fast enough to keep up with the action. Other is that the NFL is too cheap to use all HD cameras. A lot of the long shot cameras are still not HD. If you want to see how good your set can be, watch a high profile college game. If it looks like crap, return the set. If it looks great, send an email to the NFL. I tried to look at the specs on your TV, but there is no television with that model number. As far as I can tell, BB does not sell a 60" LG TV.
  4. This is kind of a self serving thread. I am in the market for a desktop computer and was hoping we could flesh out some specs and brand information. My current desktop is a Lenovo (mostly) i5-3330 with 8G of RAM and a XFX Radeon HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 Double D Video Card. It's a very decent machine, but it's 2012 vintage hardware, could use some more memory, and is starting to throw up BSODs. [rationalization] The current/last gen i5/i7 desktops are around twice as fast, come with more RAM, and use about half as much power. They also have newer/faster USB ports -- a lot of them. And they take up a lot less space. Paired with a Zotac GTX 1050 Ti OC, I think I would get very decent performance, energy efficiency, and value. [/rationalization] For me, there is one additional wrinkle -- I'd like to buy this computer at Staples. I'll have $80 worth of Rewards in a couple days, I have $240 in gift cards, and I have to spend $522.03 to maintain my Premier status for 2020. I am looking at the HP Pavilions. The BF 'deal' is the 590-P0066 for $349.99 ($120 after applying $80 of Rewards and $150 of gift cards and reducing my Rewards deficit to $252.03)... 2.8GHz Intel i5-8400 6-core processor with up to 4GHz and 9MB cache memory12GB DDR4 SDRAM 1TB hard driveIntel UHD Graphics 630802.11a/b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth 4.2 technologiesDVD-WriterUse 2 x USB 2.0, 6 x USB 3.1, and 1 x USB-C 3.1 Gen 1 portsBuilt-in HDMI and VGA out portsDimensions: 13.3"H x 6.69"W x 10.9"DThis PC is also available for $479.99 this week with a $100 rebate (visa card) if you recycle a PC. Applying $80 in Rewards and $150 in gift cards, OOP is $249.99 ($149.99 treating the Visa card as cash) and Rewards deficit is reduced to $122.04. Value wise, paying $30 to avoid spending $130 feels like a push to me -- especially when you consider the likelihood that this machine will sell out on BF and likely be avoided this week by most given the imminent discount and rebate risk. Still with me? There is another desktop that qualifies for the rebate this week. Both are the same price but the second has less RAM but adds Optane...2.8GHz Intel Core i5-8400 6-core processor with up to 4GHz turbo frequency and 9MB cache memory8GB memory1TB hard driveIntel UHD Graphics 630802.11a/b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth 4.2 technologiesDVD-Writer4 USB 2.0, 6 USB 3.1, and 1 USB-C 3.1 Gen 1 portsBuilt-in HDMI, VGA, and VGA out portsDimensions: 13.31"H x 6.69"W x 10.91"DWhat do we think of Optane vs more RAM. HP has a decent explanation here. Either machine can be upgraded to add the missing feature. It costs $28.49 to add 16g of Optane to the first machine and $17.99 to add 4g to the latter. You can go to 16g for $31.99. Still kind of a wash, but 16g+Optane seems like a no brainer. There is an i7 for $659.99 on BF, and the i7 is between 20% and 30% faster, but the $310 premium is more than it would cost me to upgrade the CPU right now. Probably a lot less by the time I NEED 30% more muscle. I am looking at the ZOTAC Gaming GeForce GTX 1650 OC 4GB GDDR5 128-Bit Gaming Graphics Card as an upgrade for this computer. Reading the Q&A on Amazon, I know this card will work with all of these machines. It should be about 20% faster than my current card. I'm thinking i5-8400 with 16g of RAM and 16g of Optane and a ZOTAC Gaming GeForce GTX 1650 OC 4GB GDDR5 128-Bit Gaming Graphics Card for $332 OOP is a good deal -- better than BF. What do you think? What did I get wrong?
  5. Now that the [unimpressive] Staples ad is posted, here is my list... I'll grab one of the $49.99 Echo Show 5s ($15 KC)The Waterpik Sonic Fusion is $101.99, yields $30 in KC, and has a $20 rebate. $51.99 is only $7 more than I paid for mine ;-) At BJ's Club, I'd get the eSmart Ultimate Chair for $499.99. So, [email protected] Not worried about taxes because I live in New Hampshire.
  6. Christmas was never better than when our kids were young. I never slept Christmas Eve -- assembling this, wrapping that, and drinking...Christmas cheer. My kids are grown, my wife has passed, and things are a lot different. I have a lot of the things I used to stand in line for. I don't need much at all. I rarely stand in line. Despite all of this, I am 'into it' more this year than I have been in a decade. I can't explain it, but I will be in the stores even if I don't have a shopping list. I content myself to vicariously share in the joy of young families. Christmas cheer is not achieved at the cash register. If you are not enjoying BF as a consumer, shut off your computer and walk around the stores. Enjoy the decorations. Watch the kids with Santa. Remember how it was. Clicking stuff on a computer is not the same as shopping at a B&M. Get out and enjoy the holidays with other people.
  7. While online shopping may change my plans, I plan to wait in line at Staples for my new desktop. (I will likely stop at Walmart on my way home from Thanksgiving dinner at my in-laws.) From there, I will hit Home Depot (same shopping center) and probably do Kohls.
  8. I noticed a couple things today. First, a few Sears and K-Mart stores near me are closing and liquidation sales begin 12/02. Should be fun. Second, if you preview NEXT WEEKS Staples flyer, the last page appears to link to a BF ad preview. Does nothing now, but should be active Sunday. 2020 is my last year as a Staples Rewards member. Too much work. Too little gain. BUT, I will be buying a new desktop there on BF.
  9. @Brad, this is going to cost you a fortune!
  10. I miss the old thread. What did we finish with? 36? 1204 posts. I think we can do better! (Especially if the prize is a t-shirt,)
  11. Staples Walmart (if they have guaranteed prices and availability) Dell Best Buy Target
  12. How is it that we do not have gottadeal BF 'starter jackets'? 'if you can read this' on the back, this on the front... http://i.gottadeal.com/main/images/merch/2015design.png Blue with orange trim. Probably still time for 2019...
  13. https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Fox-Wireless-TV-Speakers/dp/B00A2KFOL8/ For my mother-in-law who is hard of hearing and hates her hearing aids, these speakers give her adequate volume at her seat while others enjoy television at a lower volume at theirs.
  14. A chromebook is a low power device which runs chrome (a browser) as its operating system. It is designed to browse web pages. A laptop is a more general use computer which runs Microsoft's Windows, Apple's MacOS, or some flavor of Linux/Unix/Android. It is more powerful and better suited for running programs.
  15. It really isn't. Every time I line a trash can with a re-purposed plastic bag, I eliminate the need for Glad to manufacture one in China, ship it across the globe, and sell it to me. Massachusetts has banned plastic bags, so I bring my spares to work in Lynn Massachusetts and share them as FREEDOM BAGS. Use Less, Re-Use, Recycle. BTW, the Glad bags you pay for end up in the same land fill as my FREEDOM BAGS.
  16. from https://www.wepc.com/benchmark/fortnite-system-requirements/ Shop for a laptop with a dedicated GPU that is at least as good as the GTX 660 or HD7870. I'd be looking for an Nvidia GTX-Ti1050/1060.
  17. ^^^^ I would set the floor at 8GB of RAM and current or last gen i5. You won't spend much more now and you will be happy with the machine for a lot longer.
  18. Great contest. Are we going to do this EVERY Friday? So much has changed in 13 years. Maybe time for people to stop complaining about the ads? TVs and DVDs are relatively expensive. The best deals were on low tech gifts. The Star Wars/Transformers toys would be a great deal today. Kitchen appliances look to be about what Kohls will charge this year. The best deal in that flyer is the $29.88 6 1/2 foot pre-lit tree. Let's do an old Kohls flyer next!
  19. I've never seen it over $1k. It's been $800ish, so this is not heart stopping. Just the same, 75" for $750 is pretty awesome. You also get 5% cash back from Discover on walmart.com, so it nets to just over $700. I have not laid eyes on this set. Don't mind lack of smartness (have a drawer full of 4K FTV Sticks), but the picture has to be good. Walmart is good about returns, so an in home audition is not out of the question. The biggest set I've watched television on was a 90" Sanyo (I think) at BJs Club. It was hard to get far enough away for the picture to be watchable.
