  1. We've had DirecTV for about 3 years now in our house with no problems. As with jukus, cable is not available in our area, but we are happy with our DirecTV service and especially with the DVR.

We have a telephone line going to our main DirecTV box which means that we can order pay-per-view, etc from that box. We have an additional box in DS's room, but I don't believe that one is or has ever been connected to a phone line. In any event, you would not need separate phone lines - just access to your main phone line for the boxes to be able to use periodically.

Some of the current offers include free HBO and Cinemax for 3 months. When we installed, ours included free receivers and a free DVR.

I'm going to make a shameless plug here - any DirecTV subscriber can get a credit for referring a new member, so if you decide you'd like to sign up, you might consider letting someone here refer you.

  2. I've played this before (we called it White Elephant). We do something similar where I work now - but the gifts are better.

Last year my co-worker hid $20 in a cheap toilet bowl brush container then wrapped it up nicely. The look on the face of the person that opened it was hilarious - and it got stolen 3x when people saw the cash.

  3. No rituals here, I always seem to be wrapping right up until the last minute. I do use a unique paper for each child though.

I like the sound of some of these, though - especially the ones that involve wine :) Maybe I'll try that this year.

  4. I stash family gifts in our closet or in a locked spare bedroom - works ok, but I have to keep an eye on the kids at all times.

I've changed how I'll keep track of things this year. I started a Google spreadsheet with our lists, so both DH and I can make changes or updates and see just what we want to buy or have already purcahsed. And, I might share it with the rest of the family so they can use it for ideas if they want to.

  5. The last 5-6 years I've done a theme for my Christmas decorating including the tree & the rest of the house. Last year was blue & silver, the year before I graduated from college (at 38) in December so we decorated with maroon & gold (school colors). This year I think it will be red and white and kind of modern with abstract snowflakes and lots of metallic or glittery ornaments.
