  1. It's a tradition for me & my older kids. My husband would probably take me to the E.R. if I didn't go out! I like getting all the free stuff. I'm excited about Half Price Books this year. I've gotten their $5 card for the last two years (and my 2 kids each got one also). But this year they are having a half price sale! So $5 - $10. I usually get 2 free books w/ my $5 card so now I can get 4. Then hit the pharmacies for all their free stuff. I'm like some of the other posters, most of my real Christmas shopping is already done thanks to the early sales.
  2. Yep, I'm waiting for the office ones. I still miss the years past when they had tons of freebate stuff so every year I keep hoping they'll bring it back. Especially because I've about depleted my CD-ROM collection that I acquired about 5 years ago! :)

  4. Couldn't sleep so I got up early than expected and arrived at WMart between 315 & 330 thinking I still had a chance for a laptop since they weren't even supposed to start lining up until after 2 and they were supposed to have 110 of them. But the line guard in my designated section said no more laptops - I didn't even ask questions. Just went on and picked up my daughter and hit all the "wait in line to get $" at Sports Authority (great), Anna's Linens (rip off, had to spend $25 to save $10 - gave it back and moved on), Half Price Books (great). Squeezed in a $29 printer at Office Depot between Anna's and the bookstore. Made a couple more quick stops and got to Kohl's around 9am thinking the crowds would have thinned by then. Got what I wanted at great prices but had to wait 1 hr 20 mins. All in all an okay day but the laptop would've been the icing. Waiting until next year...
  5. Was at WalMart today and eavesdropped on the employee meeting where they were simulating the line for section G in the shoe department (at least at my store). I spoke with the store manager afterwards and asked him what was the plan. He told me about the map and the availability of maps on walmart.com. I asked what time to stand in line. He said (at this particular store) they weren't even going to start making the ropes for the lines until 2am Friday and they would allow no lines before the ropes were up. They will also give out tickets. At my store they are supposed to have 110 eMachine laptops. Once the 110 tix are distributed there are no more - but if you have a ticket you still have to stand in line until 5 am when they start ringing you up unless you get a 15 min. bathroom pass. I also overheard one item per family. Not sure what to do if you want a hot ticket item from two different sections...I forgot to ask about that.
  6. Pumpkin Crumb Cake

CRUST: 1 box yellow cake mix (reserve 1 cup for top), 1 egg, 1 stick butter - melted

    FILLING: 1 lb. can pumpkin pie filling, 3 eggs, 1/2 c. sugar, 1/4 c. brown sugar, 1 1/2 t. cinnamon

    TOPPING: 1 c. cake mix (reserved), 1/2 c. sugar, 3T butter - melted, 1/2 c. coconut, 1/2 c. chopped nuts

Combine cake mix (less 1 cup), egg and butter for crust. Pat into greased 9 x 13 pan.

Mix filling and pour over crust.

Combine topping and crumble over filling.

    Bake 50 - 55 mins. at 350.

Cool completely and cut into squares.

  7. It's such a sad situation. Our walmart was more crowded than usual today. But this year they had lines and gave out tickets for the big seller items. Ours is also a 24 hour walmart and that would make a difference in the rush to get in the store. Nothing is worth fighting over.

What does being 24 hours have to do with anything? Aren't all stores, even 24 hour stores, closed at some point for Thanksgiving? So they all have an opening point on BF.

I, like many, didn't see anything worth stampeeding for at WM. I did go there for jeans and PJs but didn't feel the need to line up. I wanted to get a zip drive and was annoyed at the line for electronics that went from the middle/back of the store all the way to the front door. I didn't understand why they had big ticket items, like TVs, in the "raceway" (as retailer's call it) that people could pick up and put in their basket but I had to wait in that ridiculous line for an $8.88 item - I went elsewhere.

  8. Took my teenagers and started at Sports Authority for the free gift cards. We got there 1 hour before open and were tenth in line. Left son in line and went to JCPenny's to get Aqua Globes. Missed them but got the free snow globe and some photo coasters. Back to Sports store. We each got a $10 card but the kids heard a couple people get $20 or $25. So we got our $10 worth of free stuff and moved on to Wal mart for $8 jeans and $4 pajamas - one had a hole so I'll have to take it back and probably won't find another to exchange :-(. Went to Half Price Books for their free gift card - surprised at the line. Got there at quarter til 7am opening and almost didn't make it in first 100. Got our $5 cards from them, person a few in front of us got the $100 card. Ran 2 stores over to World Market to get their free ornament and daughter won a tin of cookies. (Broke my ornament when we went back to book store and were shopping the crowded aisles.) Then to CVS and Walgreens to cash in on their free stuff.
  9. I am really surprised there's not one BF ad with a Microsoft Zune on sale. Seriously. Not even at regular price with a gift card crumb thrown in, like you get with Apple products and game consoles. Another thing I'm amazed I haven't seen is any $150 laptops, like in previous years--the lowest prices seem to be around $399.

Anyone else surprised not to see something?

I'm surprised there is NOTHING Free. Maybe a gift card to the first 100 people, or a snow globe. But NO opportunities to stock up on free stuff at the office stores or Radio Shack as in past years.

  10. Okay .. so I am thinking about getting DD17 a HS Senior a laptop for Christmas because she'll be headed to college in the fall of 2009. OR should I wait and get her one in 2009 as a graduation present?

I'm basically just looking for a laptop for her to do class papers on, check email, surf the net .. nothing major on it.

Any suggestions on what to look for? I have NFI what RAM means or processor speed. I'm a complete idiot when it comes to computer specs.

    Thanks!

Andrea, I'm doing the same thing for my Senior daughter. Actually, I found one in Sunday's paper that I liked better than the one I had been eying on BF. I looked for the most GB and the most RAM for the money and a reliable brand. I'm not sure about this Acer brand - they still seem new to me. I wound up with a Gateway which have always been reliable. But for BF I was looking at the Office Depot HP under $500. It's going to be like playing the slots in Vegas. My grandma always said once you walk away from a machine and you hear a winning bell going off - don't look back because inevitably it will be the machine you just left that someone only put one quarter in. So...once I commit and buy the laptop I plan to refrain from looking at anything else so I don't kick myself if there are better deals in the spring.

  11. Because there will always be shoppers who don't know the difference between all the different processors on the market and will buy the laptop based on price alone. The ones with the cheaper processors probably have a higher gross margin than the ones with Core2Duos, especially if they're selling for similar prices.

Well, I think this ad is a joke! NO FREEBATES at all!!!

And I right away ruled out the laptop just because Best Buy's was cheaper with a bigger hard drive. I didn't know about the processor stuff - it's a little bit Greek to me. But if I'm not mistaken the Best Buy laptop had the Core 2 Duo so even better! Hopefully Office Depot will offer some free stuff - BF is a sport for me and I'm all about the FREE.

  12. I think a bunch of us have been saying this for the last couple of years. It ain't like it used to be; that's for sure.

Yeah, a few years ago I loved BF for the purpose of stocking up on Freebates. I'd spend all morning running from Circuit City to Radio Shack to the office supply stores to wherever else to get supplies of CD-Rs, jewel cases, pens, etc. In fact, it was probably in 2003 that I got so many free CDs and DVDs I still have some left. After running all morning I'd spend all afternoon putting together the freebates while my kids wrapped presents. But there's nothing free anymore! It's taken all the fun out of it anymore. Last year I didn't even shop BF. This year I'm only in it because my daughter needs a laptop for college.

  13. Last year I worked in retail. You can imagine nobody had the day off.

But, I scheduled minor foot surgery the day before Thanksgiving so that I'd have a doctor's excuse. I couldn't be on my feet 8 hrs but I could hobble in and out of a store! As it turned out though...there was nothing worthwhile for me to go after last year.

  14. OK - I spread the wealth across 3 different media forms:

I emailed the San Antonio Express News (our only real newspaper)

I emailed a popular news station (the local Fox network)

I emailed a national Christian radio station (KLOVE) who happened to run a story this morning that holiday spending will be down...what greater follow up than to tell people how they can find out about saving!

    Thanks!

  15. Ritz ad on this website says Cannon Pixma printer is free with rebate. Does anyone know if that includes buying something else or do you just buy the printer and then get it reimbursed via rebate? Usually I see buy a computer get the printer free with rebate. Or in this case maybe buy a camera get the printer free with rebate. But does anyone know for sure what the catch is to this free Pixma printer?
