  1. Comparing the specs of the two, they appear to be the same.

There is not much difference between a 2nd and 3rd Gen 8GB iPod Touch. You would see a difference in the 32GB and 64GB 3rd Generations...they have a higher speed chip and a few other features.

I was planning on buying one for DD8 for Christmas from Apple, but being OOS worries me. I bought the same one for my DD11 for her birthday this year and she loves it. No problems with refurbs.

Guess I better jump on this one.

  2. I'd suggest then purchasing a card from the Philadelphia Public Library online...http://www.freelibrary.org/ It's $15 for out of state residents for a year. They have a good selection of ebooks.

Thank you for the great info. I went over to the B&N store and got some hands on with the Nook. I really liked it. The demonstrator person told me that our county library system will go live with Overdrive in March 2012! So I just got finished ordering the refurb Nook from Buy.com.

My wife is going to be so happy for Christmas!

EDIT: Thanks again SuggaD. I went to the Philly site and printed out an application. That's a great deal.

  3. well that stinks :( is there maybe a metro library nearby where she can get a card and they may have Overdrive? The actual program is really very simple.. create an account, waitlist or download if available, then personally I hook up my nook and transfer the documents. But if there really is nothing available then I will say that the Kindle does (from what I have seen/heard) have a much larger selection of free books ready to download. You obviously know your situation better than any of us and I'm sure she'll like either one :)

Thanks for the info. The next county to us has Overdrive, but I would need a local address to gain access to the library. Hopefully our county (which is larger) will get Overdrive soon. I emailed them to ask, but haven't heard back.

  4. Agree... borrowing from Overdrive is EXTREMELY easy. I've been borrowing one a week for at least the last 2 months with no problems. I keep my account stocked with waitlisted items and when they become available I download them. Yes you only get them for 14 days but thats not a problem for me since I usually finish a book in just a couple days.

My wife is technology challenged, so to speak. So I want to make it easy for her to d/l books. I don't mind borrowing from Overdrive if it's easy. For us only our Public School System has Overdrive, not the county library system. So the books available to adults are limited.

    YMMV.

  5. I always buy reconditioned, it is usually gone over with a fine tooth comb, the new ones are off the assembly line, I just ordered a nook for my ds. He is such a book worm, Money has been tight this year so the buy.com deal made the decision easier, plus I spoke to a few students that had the nook and they loved theirs

I mentioned in another post that borrowing e-books from libraries is not as easy as one thinks. Money is also tight with us, so I can understand saving money on the refurbished Nook. But if Amazon offers more free books than BN, wouldn't it be better in the long run to buy a Kindle? It's only $40 more...most people can live with wi-fi only.

  6. I dont know about cheaper books, I do know the Nook from Barnes and Noble you can borrow ebooks from the livrary thru Overdrive. That is a BIG PLUS for me since I read so much but hardly buy ooks because I would spend a fortune. This is reason I am getting a Nook instead of a Kindle.

I've been researching this and came across and interesting article about libraries lending books. As of now, the libraries that do ebook lending are constrained to lend ONE copy of an ebook at a time. You also have to be at the library building and bring your e-reader with you to borrow. Publishers are not very happy about "e-leanding" since they lose money and are putting a lot of constraints on libraries. Overdrive is a company that lends e-books (through a library or school), but not on Kindle or Nook.

You may want to check with your local library first before you purchase. I'm still torn between a Nook or Kindle for my wife...she mostly reads books from the library and our library has very few ebooks. At least with Amazon, from what I've heard, there are more free books than BN.

  7. I'm thinking about the same for my 8 y/o daughter for Christmas. I would go for the refurbished as mentioned earlier. $149 is a very good price, with free ship. At squaretrade.com, you can get an extended warranty for $20.

If you are worried about your daughter using the internet, you can block sites through your router, which she will use for the Wi-Fi. You can also set up an account for her on iTunes and monitor what apps she downloads. Apple tries to keep porn and those types of apps off the app store. But there are still some adult apps that I wouldn't want my daughter to see.

But if you want her to have a camera, that feature is really nice to have in the 4G, but expect to pay about $140 or so more. The ipod touch camera resolution is not as good as the iPhone is.

  8. Does anyone know what are the 5 games with the DSi at Target? Is this the same deal that Kmart has. Is this a holiday bundle that they are offering this year or is it what comes with the DSi in a regular package. If the 2 deals at Target and Kmart are the same then I will make sure that I am at Target since you get a $20 gift card with it plus they are offering the $10 card with a purchase over $100. Thanks

I also liked that they have 2 games for DS for $17 that are on my lists. The Style Labs Makeover and the Little Pet Shop.

Looking at the pictures the two ads are the same. One DSi has the Brain Age Collection, the other has Mario games. Kmart gives you a $25 Nintendo card.

It's quite possible Amazon will match this, unless these particular DSi systems are exclusive to Target and Kmart.
