  1. Just renewed my 2 Sirius radios yesterday. I first called to cancel service as of the expiration date. (offered 164.00 a year, then 141.00 a year and then 116.00 a year) I finally bit when I was offered 88.00 a year for the first unit and 53.00 a year for the second one. They also gave me access to listen online for free.

The deal was offered after I was transferred to the dept. that handles cancellations.

  2. I bought something really cool, what I came across was a 100,000-volt, pocket/purse-sized Tazer gun with a clip. For those of you who are not familiar with this product, it is a less-than-lethal stun gun with two metal prongs designed to incapacitate an assailant with a shock of high-voltage, low amperage electricity while you flee to safety. The effects are supposed to be short lived, with no long-term adverse affect on your assailant, but allowing you adequate time to retreat to safety. You simply jab the prongs into your 250 lb. Tattooed assailant, push the button, and it will render him a slobbering, goggle-eyed, muscle-twitching, whimpering, pencil-neck geek. If you've never seen one of these things in action, then you're truly missing out--way too cool!

Long story short, I bought the device and brought it home. I loaded two triple-a batteries in the darn thing and pushed the button. Nothing!

I was so disappointed. Upon reading the directions (we don't need no stinkin' directions), I found much to my chagrin that this particular model would not create an arch between the prongs. How disappointing! I do love fire for effect. I learned that if I pushed the button, however, and pressed it against a metal surface that I'd get the blue arch of electricity darting back and forth between the prongs that I was so looking forward to. I did so. Awesome!!! Sparks, a blue arch of electricity, and a loud pop!!! Yipeeeeee . . I'm easily amused, just for your information, but I have yet to explain to Toni what that burn spot is on the face of her microwave.

Okay, so I was home alone with this new toy, thinking to myself that it couldn't be all that bad with only two triple-a batteries, etc., etc. There I sat in my recliner, my cat Gracie looking on intently (trusting little soul), reading the directions (that would be me, not Gracie) and thinking that I really needed to try this thing out on a flesh and blood target. I must admit I thought about zapping Gracie for a fraction of a second and thought better of it. She is such a sweet kitty, after all. But, if I was going to give this thing to Toni to protect herself against a mugger, I did want some assurance that it would work as advertised. Am I wrong? Was I wrong to think that? Seemed reasonable to me at the time.

So, there I sat in a pair of shorts and a tank top with my reading glasses perched delicately on the bridge of my nose, directions in one hand, Tazer in another. The directions said that a one-second burst would shock and disorient your assailant; a two-second burst was supposed to cause muscle spasms and a loss of bodily control; a three-second burst would purportedly make your assailant flop on the ground like a fish out of water. All the while I'm looking at this little device (measuring about 5" long, less than 3/4 inch in circumference, pretty cute really, and loaded with two itsy, bitsy triple-a batteries) thinking to myself, "no friggin' way!" Friggin' way--trust me, but I'm getting ahead of myself.

What happened next is almost beyond description, but I'll do my best. Those of you who know me well have got a pretty good idea of what followed. I'm sitting there alone, Gracie looking on with her head cocked to one side as to say, "don't do it buddy," reasoning that a one-second burst from such a tiny lil' ole thing couldn't hurt all that bad (sound, rational thinking under the circumstances, wouldn't you agree? ).

I decided to give myself a one-second burst just for the **** of it. (Note: You know, a bad decision is like hindsight—always twenty-twenty. It is so obvious that it was a bad decision after the fact, even though it seemed so right at the time. Don't ya hate that?) I touched the prongs to my naked thigh, pushed the button, and HOLY ********* DAaaaauuuuuuMN!!! I'm pretty sure that Jessie Ventura ran in through the front door, picked me up out of that recliner, then body slammed me on the carpet over and over again.

I vaguely recall waking up on my side in the fetal position, nipples on fire, soaking wet, with my left arm tucked under my body in the oddest position. Gracie was standing over me making meowing sounds I had never heard before, licking my face, undoubtedly thinking to herself, "do it again, do it again!" (Note: If you ever feel compelled to mug yourself with a Tazer, one note of caution. There is no such thing as a one-second burst when you zap yourself. You're not going to let go of that thing until it is dislodged from your hand by a violent thrashing about on the floor. Then, if you're lucky, you won't dislodge one of the prongs 1/4" deep in your thigh like yours truly.) SON-OF-A-***** that hurt!

A minute or so later (I can't be sure, as time was a relative thing at this point), I collected my wits (what little I had left), sat up and surveyed the landscape. My reading glasses were on the mantel of the fireplace. How did they get there??? My triceps, right thigh and both titties were still twitching. My face felt like it had been shot up with Novocain, as my bottom lip weighed 88 lbs. give or take an ounce or two, I'm pretty sure.

Had tears in my eyes for 20 minutes

  3. Drove over to Circut City at 4:50 AM, parking lot was packed as expected. Store was already opened. Went over to TV displays and saw about 30 of these TV's on a pallet. Took one and went to the register. I was 8th in line at 5:05. 1 hour later I'm finally next in line. Seems the credit card approval system as well as the phone lines were down. Same problem as last year. Paid cash as that was the only option and headed home. Now to return the same TV I bought last week from BJ's Wholesale for 299.00.

    Happy Shopping to All...Mark

  4. Not sure if it helps, but Sylvania has a 20" LCD. I just purchased one from BJ's for 299.00...Mark

Found this exact same TV available from Circut City for 197.99. I guess I'll be buying this and returning my BJ's purchase...Mark

  5. Thanks for the info! I just called the same number and cancelled mine. They did say I was under a 12 month contract, so I MIGHT see a $20 cancellation fee. But I was gonna get another $14.95 charged in a few weeks anyway, so I decided it was worth the extra $5 not to have to call back. Maybe I'l get luck and not see any charge. You get to keep your email access, not that it mattered to me. I just checked and I have 7 new messages, all from AOL. :)

After hearing all the complaints of people who had hard times cancelling their AOL service, I was glad it went as smooth as it did. I too had 1 month left, but they waved it without penalty. You get to keep all the services you had under the 14.95 a month plan for free now...Mark

  6. I would not be surprised if Circuit city and Best Buy both had a 42" plasma under $1000. However, it will probably be a brand such as Maxent, Insignia, Vizio, etc...

I'm holding out for a name brand (Panasonic, Samsung, Philips or Toshiba) 50" around $1500.

Are you suggesting to stay away from certain brands? Any reason?...Mark

  7. I was lucky enough to get a couple of the Toshiba laptops last Black friday for 199.00 w/ purchase of AOL service @ 14.95 a month for 1 year. Today I called to cancel the service and was told that there would be no early termination penalties imposed. I was asked if I'd like to continue service at 9.99 a month and I declined. The phone operator asked me what type of service I have (cable modem) and she said I could continue my current level of service with all features for free. If you haven't yet cancelled the service or are thinking of renewing at the current or even lowered rate, you may be surprised to find out it's now free...Mark
  8. My sister-in-law got the Target Holiday book in the mail where it listed the Nintendo DS game system for 99.00. She went to her local Target and although the system lists for 129.00, they honored their mailing. There's also a coupon for an add. 5.00 off that she applied to the deal. Final price 94.00 before tax.

  9. First a Thank You to Rossman for the sage advice on the Circut City offer.

This is what went on at the stores as related to me.

My wife and sister-in-law went and got on line at CC around 11pm. They were first in line. At 4AM they handed out vouchers for all the hot items that were in limited supply. Some people in front of the line took vouchers for items they didn't want and then resold them for 50 bucks down the line. She said at least they asked each person down the line in order, instead of highest bidder.

My sister went to WalMart at 4AM. She wasn't there for laptop or other main items, so she went late. Long lines and chaos was the best way to describe the situation there. At 5AM a few people took shopping carts and said they were just looking in the windows, but as they opened the doors these people pushed the carts in the way and jumped the line. Many people ran directly to the computer area and mobbed the lone salesperson there and demanded a computer ahead of the line jumpers. Fights broke out and the salesman was also hit. Some customers jumped the register area and took the computers to other registers for purchase. Security was called but was too little too late.

I'm glad we opted for CC. The lines there were smaller and it was far less dangerous.

BTW- We got the 2 Laptops also.

  10. Pardon my ignorance, but I've read so much here in the past few days I think my brain is fried. If what I'm reading is correct then the CC Laptop deal is 450.00 (- AOL 250.00 instant rebate) = 199.00 +(12 months of AOL service @ 15.00) final cost of 379.00.

If the AOL rebate was not immediately applied then your cost would be 450.00 + 180.00(15.00 X12 months) =630.00 - 250.00(AOL rebate) = 380.00. Even if you never use the AOL service you pay for you still save 70.00 by buying the service plan. Does this make sense?
