  1. The updating issue is not limited to these laptops, a number of Win 8 machines have had a issue with updating. My brothers Laptop is still working fine He actually plays W.O.W on his all the time.
  2. Processor problem. It's rated only 1.00 GHZ processor speed with 1MB L2 cache, and its performance speed is equivalent to old 2001 Pentium III 1.20 GHZ we had before.

You are wrong sir. Yes it is a low end Cpu, But it is leagues faster then a 2001 era P3. Ghz is isn't everything. Its only part of the equation on cpu performance. You have to take cpu architecture in mind. For exp. A 2.3 4 cylinder STI Subaru is faster then a 1992 5.0 Mustang GT. Size isn't everything.

Actually the cpu is dual-core 1.0 ghz with a 1.33 ghz turbo mode.

  3. It's worth noting that the bolded recommendation is actually not possible with this laptop. While the datasheet shown on walmart.com states that the laptop has 2 memory slots, there is actually only 1 slot. So, to get to 4 Gig, you will need to purchase a single 4 gig stick and replace the 2 gig. Note that originally HP's website also stated that there were 2 slots, but after numerous complaints from people attempting to upgrade their RAM, they changed the webpage to state "1 slot" and claimed that the previous value was a typo.

Thanks for the correction, I guess they cut corners on the mother board. 4 GB stick of ram is still cheap still worth the upgrade.

  4. I am getting no where with AMD.com Trying to get everything updated and running into a road block on graphics :(

On the Amd website go to graphics driver and download the c-series graphic driver package, its about a 144 mb download I believe.

  5. I set my brothers up, and it runs well but you need to do a few things first. One uninstall all the crapware i.e 60 day trail of Norton etc. You can install Avast free its much better and not as resource intensive. I installed the latest graphics and cpu drivers from Amd.com. And I would install another 2 GB of ram (For a total of 4 GB)which is extremely cheap on sites such as Newegg or Amazon. After these changes it will run smooth. Even with 2 GB it has now it runs ok.
  6. Ok so what is this law you speak of?

Oklahoma, Wisconsin and 1 other state I believe have a Anti-competitive law that prohibits stores from selling goods below what it cost to manufacture the goods. Aka The Wal-mart law. It's designed to protect Mom & pops stores in small towns.

  7. I am in Oklahoma and for most items that are $100 or more it would be worth it to travel out of state or order online. The $688 60 inch Vizio at WalMart is $976. The $15 WalMart video games are $18. Pretty much all good electronics and things that you would really camp out for are not worth it. Other places besides WalMart don't seem to have that issue. I don't know if they don't discount that much, don't follow the law, or if it doesn't apply to them.

Why does the local Oklahoma ads now show the regular national prices now? Have they changed or is it the new price now?

  8. Thank you! Then what about 4gb/500gb combo? Do we have any good deals for those on BF?

  9. Hello Everyone!

I am looking for a Laptop for my son (9 years old). Need atleast 8gb memory, >500gb hdd. He mostly uses it for online games, Could someone suggest a good brand in sale for black friday? Thanks in advance!

    Cheers

    Brian

To be honest getting 8 GB of ram in a laptop for a 9 yr is overkill! No game requires that much ram esp online based ones. If you do need the ram get the best cpu/gpu in the price range you want to spend. Then buy the 8 GB of ram later from Newegg or Amazon. It would be a lot cheaper to go that route.

  10. I am looking for a Tablet for a 75 year old lady.I am really dumb with technology too.I am afraid the 7 inch would be too small for her to read off of.I would like for her to be able to surf the internet and get e-mail and use it for a reader also.Any suggestions?

Unless she is tech savy I would not recommend a tablet for her unless you will to be available to do everything for her. Font size is adjustable on all tablets.

  11. You have to run a coax cable to the back of it, just like getting cable tv (if you have high speed internet)

WRONG!!!! You have to run a Ethernet cable from a router that is connected to a broadband modem, if u don't have a router close by, you can get a wireless bridge (aka wireless game adapter) to link a wireless signal from a wireless router.

Thanks so much.I appreciate it.I have been up since 6am cooking and have a horrific headache!!I don't know the difference between the pentium and amd processors.

    Jenn

Hi Jenn!, I would recommend the 1st choice because it will do everything your son needs it to do, plus it has a better Graphics igp incase he ever whats to play some games at low settings. The 2nd laptop is good also, it does have a slightly better cpu, but its not a big enough difference to travel a hour and wait in line for it, the amd cpu is a good cpu also. Hope this helps!

  13. I'm confused about the difference between the Best Buy Insignia for $99 and the LG one from Amazon at $129. Are they both wired? I'm a total novice. I do subscribe to Netflix and we are on cable with a wireless router for cable internet. What do I want to look for?

Yes the 99.00 Insignia BD player at Best Buy and the 129.99 LG370 at Amazon is both wired players. They have no wi-fi, you will have to run a ethernet cord or a wireless bridge to got them internet.

But good news! The wireless version of the Insignia BD player with Netflix was 199.99 is now 129.99, the same priced as the wired LG370 player at Amazon!

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Insignia%26%23174%3B+-+Insignia%AE+-+Blu-ray+Disc+Player+with+Wi-Fi+and+1080p+Output/9386103.p?id=1218096448903&skuId=9386103

  14. I''m looking for Blue ray that plays netflix. The guys at BB seemed to be steering me away from the Insignia for 129.99 asking if I trusted "the BB brand". Has anyone had any problems with the Insignia's thus far? With the 129.99 system you don't need to buy an extra piece to pick up wireless so I'm thinking its a really good deal.

Wow that's strange they trying to steer you away from there house brand, but they do have a higher profit margin on more expensive players, The latest Insignia players are thought to be rebadged LG players anyway!

  15. I'm glad to hear Celeron isn't the crappy discount processor that it used to be, so it's back to the great debate... The Intel 4500 does appear to run Left 4 Dead (using a dual core processor) so I imagine that Team Fortress 2 will work. Also, I have to say I trust HP over emachines for overall quality. Man, I was hoping I could stay inside a heated building while I waited for black friday...

Yes the The Intel 4500 is way better the the Intel 3100 igp it replaced, but the driver support is just not there for games as it is on the ATI hd3200. Most celerons come with the Intel 4500 not the Intel 4500hd which is slightly better then the 4500. Plus when it comes to high definition movies the ATI hd3200 has a decided edge in gpu accelerated hd decoding esp important with these budget cpu's.

  16. The sales guy at BB told my husband this past weekend that if we are wanting to get a blu-ray player that does Netflix right out of the box we should wait until this coming Saturday because they are going to have some kind of special.... no idea brand, price, etc though.

Im pretty sure they are talking about there Insignia BD player with netflix for 99.00 on black friday. Most BB employees have no idea whats going to be on sale, they don't know any more then we do!

  17. I'm thinking of going with the 200 dollar E-Machine laptop because it has a decent integrated card on it. According to Notebookcheck's website, the HD 3200 is able to run Half Life 2 on high settings ~ 25 FPS. I think that all the thing needs to be a pretty serviceable laptop is an extra 2 gigs of RAM, some time spent to get rid of the bloatware, and some TLC. Anyone agree with me on this or am I just blowing smoke?

I really just want a system to run Team Fortress 2 after my last two systems fell apart... :gdcensored:

You are right the ATI hd3200 is one the better igp's out. In fact it's a lot better then any Intel graphics solution.

  18. Swim,

It is $429.97 I bought it today and will not open it until after I check out all of the ads, just in case I need to take it back. I was trying to bypass the rush and standing outside for countless hours.

By the way, thanks for the work you did with the spreadsheet!

    Jim

Thats a nice laptop you bought, if you are happy with it, thats good, about the whole Amd vs intel thing, is that for most people the both cpu's are more then enough power for what you are going to use them for. The new amd cpu's athlon II and Turion II are based on a new design and are supposed to be cooler and more battery efficient then previous amd designs.
