  1. So, after reading through the comments on 720p vs 1080p, I'm thinking that for a 32-37" screen, there would really be no difference in viewing at a max distance of 18'. Can someone who knows TVs confirm or deny this?

I'm looking to purchase an LED TV for the living room and it'll probably be 37", if I find the right TV and right deal this BF season. After standing in a few stores, I'm thinking 720 vs 1080 on those sizes doesn't make much difference, if any, but size and distance in a Wal-Mart or Best Buy is really deceptive when compared to my living room. I'm also leaning towards Sony or Samsung display, with LG and Vizio as runner ups, if the price is too good to pass up.

Correct, you'd want to go 720p on a 32-37 class model.

  2. So we'll have the in-laws over this year for Thanksgiving, and typically I'll be out an about shortly after dinner is done but they're going to be in town for the week and we need to replace all our towels before then as they've seen better days.

I'm reaching out to everyone in hopes of some recommendations on what to look for and what prices to expect while on the hunt. As I said I'll need to pick these up pre-BF so if you know of any current deals or the price range I should be looking at for a set of 4-6 face/hand/body towels.

    Thanks! :D

  3. So for those of you who may not have noticed October is usually filled with great deals. Many of these deals rival what has been seen during Black Friday, hard to believe right? This primarily pertains to electronics such as receivers, hard drives, TVs, etc.

However, this year has been lacking somewhat, what could have brought this on? There have been many deals on electronics since the beginning of the year and it's possible the effects of manufacturing cut backs from 2008 are now being seen. It's going to be very interesting to see how retailers play it this year.

  4. Well, I'll be getting that 37" Olevia @ Target here in Chicago if I can't find any better deals online within the next week. Hopefully I do, don't much feel like camping out but @tleast it'll be at Harlem and Irving Plaza here on the north side. Targets main door is litterally in the parking lot so if it happens to rain or something, I wouldn't be effected.

    sucker.

off-topic though, this is the we hate BF07 thread. ;)

if there are no door-busters to be added in the paper days before BF then count me out for sure.

  5. i'm glad there is a thread for this because i couldn't agree more.

this is the first year where i think i'm actually going to stay home. i've seen and purchased better deals already this year and if anything really grabs me i'll probably get it online.

i don't plan on buying any big ticket items, but if i wanted an hdtv i'd probably go to the sears friends and family tomorrow and get a better deal. that or wait until next year.

the only thing that made me say "oh thats cool" was some dvds at CC. and i already have netflix so i'm not that worried. but i would like to get my wife the new gilmore girls season. =)

  6. Well I didn't really see a thread for this, so I apologize if I'm duplicating something. Please remove this if I am.

Just wanted to post something that I have found extremely useful over the years:

Save the ads to your hard drive the second they are posted.

In the past there have been many companies who decide to file law suits and the ads all disappear, of course this year we were hit early by Wal-Mart with a preemptive strike so we wont be seeing their ad at all.

Any other tips please share. I know this entire sub-forum is a helping guide for all of us to use, but I just wanted to see a general tips thread.

  7. seems all the bad stories always come from walmart, go figure.

there was almost a brawl in 2005 at compusa, the police were there thankfully and it didnt get out of control. basically there was about 500-1000 people in line and then right before they open the doors a car pulls up and about 5 people get out and walk right up to the door shoving their wway in. some crazy older lady yelling it was her right to go in as there is no law or signs posting about her needing to wait in line to shop in their store. i was right up at the front with about 12 people and there were 2-3 people physically holding her back. it was comical in the end really, but the mad rush of pushing came afterwards as the doors opened and i felt the crowd at my back. no looking back, just went for the goods, no injuries. =)

  8. my setup:

    long sleeve thermal+shirt over

    long socks, jeans

    sleeping bag (insulated kind)

    camping/sleeping chair with leg rests

yea i live in florida, but it gets down to 30 here which is freezing to us when you are used to 80-90+

  9. this year i may finally be bringing a laptop if i can get it working. i have two dead apples but each of them have parts enough to make one working laptop. im gonna take this weekend to work on getting it done.

i posted here already but can't stress enough how important it is to bring all the ads, i ended up bringing a backpack and stuffing them all inside along with a list that i made for what im buying. also gives you something to do if you dont have a laptop or are alone.

  10. hmm, well I think the cat is out of the bag on this one. every year more and more come, but it certainly does suck when people are casually told about it for no good reason. if someone said to me, "hey i am buying a 42" hdtv and its going to cost me $2000 it's such a bargain" i would help them out no question. but randomly boasting about it is not good. :gdparanoid:

hehe, but really in the end it just adds to the drive to get out there earlier and make it more madness. ;)

  11. Could be, but a 19" lcd at that price would be attractive for a lot of people. If it has a dead pixel -- and it is even noticeable -- bring it back for another or a refund within 14 days.

In general, LCDs are much improved and low end is pretty good. For gamers or movie watchers, contrast and brightness matter. I have a lot of LCDs, and I cannot say that DVI matters. I look for it as a feature and indicator of quality, but it's not a show stopper.

i picked up the samsung 20" from staples last year (i think it was $179). it eventually developed a lazy pixel but it fixes itself and after a few months of use i no longer even see it. i play a lot of games and watch a ton of movies, the refresh rate on this thing is amazing. would never go back to crt.

if they have another one like this again i'll be grabbing it for sure.

  12. the year before last the lines started thanksgiving day around 5pm and they opened on midnight. in 2006 the lines must have started much earlier, i ended up going late and not staying. line was worse than best buy.

don't plan on going this year to compusa at all, rather get similar deals online.

the one on OBT or the on in Altamaonte Springs

I've been going to the one in Altamonte Springs. You planning on going out there this year? I was 3rd in line 2005. =)
